Aggregate structure of covalently functionalized chiral specific semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was systematically studied employing static light scattering (SLS). Fractal dimensions (Df) of two specific chirality SWNTs—SG65 and SG76 with (6, 5) and (7, 6) chiral enrichments—were measured under four biological exposure media conditions, namely: Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM), Minimum Essential Medium (MEM), Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium, and 0.9% saline solution. The SWNTs exhibited chiral dependence on Df with SG65 showing more fractal or loosely bound aggregate structures, i.e., lower Df values (range of 2.24 ± 0.03 to 2.64 ± 0.05), compared to the SG76 sample (range of 2.58 ± 0.13 to 2.90 ± 0.08). All the Df values reported are highly reproducible, measured from multiple SLS runs and estimated with ‘random block-effects’ statistical analysis that yielded all p values to be <0.001. The key mechanism for such difference in Df between the SWNT samples was identified as the difference in van der Waals (VDW) interaction energies of these samples, where higher VDW of SG76 resulted in tighter packing density. Effect of medium type showed lower sensitivity; however, presence of di-valent cations (Ca2+) in DMEM and MEM media resulted in relatively loose or more fractal aggregates. Moreover, presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), used to mimic the in vitro cell culture condition, reduced the Df values, i.e., created more fractal structures. Steric hindrance to aggregation was identified as the key mechanism for creating the fractal structures. Also, increase in FBS concentration from 1% to 10% resulted in increasingly lower Df values.  相似文献

Summary. The mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, and the pine engraver, Ips pini (Say), often co-exist in lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelmann. Intra- and interspecific semiochemical communication occurs in both species and their complete semiochemical repertoire and precise dynamics of pheromone production have not been elucidated. Porapak-Q extracts of captured volatiles from beetles of each species aerated at different attack phases (freshly emerged, pioneer sex alone in the log and both sexes paired in new galleries), followed by gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectroscopic analyses identified 17 compounds (seven compounds common to both species, six present in D. ponderosae and four present in I. pini) that excited the antennae of either or both species. Seven compounds for D. ponderosae and nine for I. pini had not been assessed for behavioural activity. In field trapping experiments, 2-phenylethanol produced by both species inhibited the response of D. ponderosae to its aggregation pheromones. exo- and endo-Brevicomin produced by D. ponderosae significantly decreased the response of I. pini to its aggregation pheromone ipsdienol. Nonanal, a ubiquitous compound found in the volatiles of lodgepole pine, various nonhosts and in both beetle species deterred the response of I. pini to ipsdienol. The occurrence of cis-verbenol, trans-verbenol and verbenone in emergent I. pini, and verbenone and 2-phenylethanol in emergent D. ponderosae suggests that these compounds may inhibit aggregation and induce dispersal following emergence. Termination of aggregation in D. ponderosae appears to depend on the production of frontalin in combination with changes in the relative ratios of verbenone, exo-brevicomin, trans-verbenol and 2-phenylethanol. In I. pini, the cessation of ipsdienol production by males is probably the main factor in terminating aggregation. Received 16 November 1999; accepted 7 August 2000  相似文献

Collecting municipal solid waste (MSW) is a major and expensive task for local waste management authorities, thus efficient MSW collection is a necessity. This study presents a procedure for developing an aggregate indicator (AI) to assess MSW collection efficiency based on multiple factors. The applicabilities of various key performance indicators (KPIs) are evaluated based on five selection criteria, and five KPIs are chosen to form the AI. The relative efficiencies of local MSW collection services are analyzed by the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method. A set of common weights for all five KPIs is then generated based on DEA results and four selection rules by modifying a previous approach. Finally, the proposed AI is applied to assess the MSW collection services provided by 307 local governments in Taiwan, and associated results are compared and discussed.  相似文献

The present work aims to ascertain the mechanisms of surfactant (dodecylbenzene sulfonate; DBS) effects on the aggregation behaviors of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) in natural water samples. Aggregation experiments were conducted at a TiO2-NPs concentration of 10 mg/L in deionized water and in natural water samples via dynamic light scattering and Zeta potential determination. Average attachment efficiency was calculated to compare the aggregation behaviors of nanoparticles in the two aqueous media. Results showed that the effects of DBS on aggregation could be interpreted by both Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) and non-DLVO mechanisms. In natural water samples, aggregation did not occur rapidly and was able to develop slowly under all conditions, and the roles of DBS were obvious at high DBS concentration owing to the impacts of inherent components of natural water samples, such as colloids and natural organic compounds. Future aggregation studies should concentrate on multi-factor, multi-colloidal and dynamic aspects under similar environmental conditions.  相似文献

Ag–AgBr/TiO_2 supported on reduced graphene oxide(Ag–AgBr/TiO_2/RGO) with different mass ratios of grapheme oxide(GO) to TiO_2 were synthesized via a facile solvothermal-photo reduction method. Compared to the single-, two-and three-component nanocomposites,the four-component nanocomposite, Ag–AgBr/TiO_2/RGO-1 with mass ratio of GO to TiO_2at 1%, exhibited a much higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of penicillin G(PG)under white light-emitting diode(LED-W) irradiation. The PG degradation efficiency increased with the increase of mass ratio of GO to TiO_2 from 0.2% to 1%, then it decreased with the increase of mass ratio of GO to TiO_2 from 1% to 5%. The zeta potentials of RGO-nanocomposites became more negative with the presence of humic acid(HA) due to the negatively charged HA adsorption, resulting in the shift of points of zero charge to lower values of pH. The aggregations of nanocomposites were more significant due to the bridging effect of HA. Furthermore, the aggregated particle sizes were larger for RGO-nanocomposites compared to other nanoparticles, due to the bindings of the carboxylic and phenolic functional groups in HA with the oxygen-containing functional groups in the RGO-nanocomposites.The microfiltration(MF) membrane was effective for the nanocomposites separation. In the continuous flow through submerged membrane photoreactor(sMPR) system, backwashing operation could efficiently reduce membrane fouling and recover TiO_2, and thus indirectly facilitate the PG removal.  相似文献

Mungbean is an important, short-duration legume crop with high nutritive value for poor families, where protein and micronutrient scarcity are most pervasive. In developing countries, like Pakistan, where mungbean is one of the greatest sources of protein for underprivileged people, salinity and metal stresses are drastically limiting its yield. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the ways for promoting the growth of mungbean under stressed conditions. This study provides the basis for the use of two previously isolated halophilic and nickel-resistant bacteria [Bacillus subtilis and Halomonas aquamarina (1)] in promoting the growth of mungbean plant under nickel-stressed environments. These bacterial strains were previously found to improve the growth of plants under salinity because of their good biofilm-forming abilities. We hypothesized that these two halophilic and nickel-resistant biofilm-forming bacteria can help the plants to grow under nickel-stressed environments by promoting soil aggregation as they were previously reported to resist salinity and nickel stress, as well as were found to promote plant growth under saline environments. The results revealed that under nickel stress, both bacteria promote plant growth by facilitating the formation of soil aggregates through an increase in their extra polymeric substance (EPS) production. © 2018 Science Press. Decision making is of crucial importance in the lives of both animals and humans. How decisions of group members scale up to group decisions is of great interest. Accordingly, we gave homeless ant colonies (n = 67) in three experiments a choice between two nest sites (with small, big or mixed sand grains), each of which had to be excavated to be habitable. Among the colonies that chose only one of the new nest sites, all preferred the ones that could be excavated most easily and quickly. There are interesting parallels between the collective choice of mining sites and the ability of certain ants to select short cuts; both involve positive feedback. However, in this paper, we discuss a mechanism whereby collective co-ordination in the production of social infrastructure can occur in the absence of signalling.  相似文献

In this paper we present a model that determines the number of potential recruits of Lasius niger, when feeding on a liquid sugar source. The core of the model are two rules: (i) there is a number of workers (facultative foragers) that become potential recruits if starved and (ii) facultative foragers are more likely to become starved than nonforagers because they are more likely to donate food in a trophallaxis (sugar-exchange) event. We develop and explore an analytical model based on these rules, deriving the number of potential recruits after an arbitrary period of starvation. We develop a simplified recruitment model and observe that the predictions of the model are in rough agreement with the empirical data.  相似文献

Many animals, including gregarious caterpillars, begin life in groups and become increasingly solitary as they grow larger. These ontogenetic changes in social behaviour suggest that the costs and benefits of grouping change with increasing individual size. Forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria) colonies exhibit complex social behaviour during the early larval instars, using pheromone trails to move together between temporary bivouacs and feeding sites, and break up as the caterpillars grow. We demonstrate changes in individual responses to cues from conspecifics that explain changes in aggregation during caterpillar development. We used Markov chain analysis to test the influence of pheromone trails and colony-mates on an individual caterpillars tendency to switch between quiescence, searching, walking and spinning. Pheromone-laden silk trails increased the tendency to begin locomotion, whereas colony-mates increased switching from activity to quiescence. Trails also influenced the form taken by locomotor behaviour, and promoted directed walking over searching. Social cues thus increase the efficiency of individual locomotion. Younger larvae were more quiescent and more reluctant to walk in the absence of trails than were older insects. An increase in independent locomotion as the larvae grow provides a mechanism to explain colony break-up and points to an ontogenetic shift in the internal processes driving behaviour. Scaling relationships suggest that many of the benefits associated with group-living in caterpillars decrease as individuals grow larger, providing an adaptive explanation for observed ontogenetic changes in social behaviour.Communicated by N. The rapid development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with thousands types of nanomaterials being produced, will lead to various environmental impacts. Thus,understanding the behaviors and fate of these nanomaterials is essential. This study focused on the interaction between polyhydroxy fullerenes(PHF) and ferrihydrite(Fh), a widespread iron(oxyhydr)oxide nanomineral and geosorbent. Our results showed that PHF were effectively adsorbed by Fh. The adsorption isotherm fitted the D-R model well, with an adsorption capacity of 67.1 mg/g. The adsorption mean free energy of 10.72 k J/mol suggested that PHF were chemisorbed on Fh. An increase in the solution p H and a decrease of the Fh surface zeta potential were observed after the adsorption of PHF on Fh; moreover, increasing initial solution p H led to a reduction of adsorption. The Fourier transform infrared spectra detected a red shift of C–O stretching from 1075 to 1062 cm-1 and a decrease of Fe–O bending, implying the interaction between PHF oxygenic functional groups and Fh surface hydroxyls. On the other hand, PHF affected the aggregation and reactivity of Fh by changing its surface physicochemical properties. Aggregation of PHF and Fh with individual particle sizes increasing from 2 nm to larger than 5 nm was measured by atomic force microscopy. The uniform distribution of C and Fe suggested that the aggregates of Fh were possibly bridged by PHF. Our results indicated that the interaction between PHF and Fh could evidently influence the migration of PHF, as well as the aggregation and reactivity of Fh.  相似文献
