This paper describes a procedure for evaluating the desertification risk in threatened areas. The procedure is based on an eight-equation dynamic model of a generic human–resource system that can be applied to different desertification syndromes. For each application, interest focuses on finding all the possible long-term final states of the system and on defining the conditions that mark out sustainability and long-term desertification by means of unambiguous specific parameter relations. The procedure is applied to three typified cases in Spain: (A) rainfed crops in areas with high soil erosion risk; (B) irrigated intensive agricultural systems; and (C) commercial rangelands. Results show that, in case A, high profit scenarios are responsible for the final extension of desertification but do not determine the specific threshold between sustainability and desertification. Male dung beetles, Onthophagus taurus, are dimorphic for a secondary sexual trait, head horns. Horned males participate in the production of brood masses while
hornless male do not. Here we examine the reproductive performance of females mated with males exhibiting alternative horn
morphologies. We found that exposure to males may be costly for females in that it reduced the total number of brood masses
produced. However, females paired with horned males produced significantly larger brood masses than females paired with hornless
males or females producing broods alone. We discuss the possible selection pressures that may underly horn evolution in this
genus.

The two types of males in the ant genus Cardiocondyla differ remarkably in morphology and behavior. Ergatoid males are wingless fighters whose spermatogenesis continues throughout
their entire adult lives and which therefore have an “unlimited” sperm supply. They attempt to kill all eclosing ergatoid
rivals and thus to increase their share in copulations with the virgin queens reared in their nests. Winged males, on the
other hand, are docile and emigrate from the nests a few days after eclosion, probably to mate with queens from other colonies.
By this time, their testes have fully degenerated and all sperm is stored in the seminal vesicles. Before emigration, winged
males may mate with virgin queens in their maternal nests, but they are nevertheless rarely attacked by ergatoid males. In
the laboratory, the life expectancy of ergatoid males is only slightly higher than that of winged males, but because of the
emigration of the latter the difference is likely to be more pronounced in the field. Both male morphs are capable of inseminating
more than 35 virgin queens. However, winged males older than 14 days mate less often than ergatoid males of similar age, probably
due to sperm depletion in later life. The spermathecae of queens inseminated by ergatoid males contained significantly more
sperm than those of queens which mated with winged males. We discuss the evolution of intranidal mating and male polymorphism
in ants.

Introduction: Studies have shown that approximately half of arrested intoxicated drivers had their last alcoholic drink at a licensed bar or restaurant. Current efforts to prevent intoxicated patrons from leaving licensed establishments and driving home have been only partially successful. Since a high proportion of drinkers drive to their drinking destination, promoting the use of alternative transportation (AT) – including safe ride shuttles, free or subsidized taxi and ridesharing services, voluntary or paid designated driver programs, and more accessible public transportation – is an important strategy for preventing impaired driving. The primary goal of this study was to review and synthesize the findings of research studies designed to test the effectiveness of AT programs in reducing alcohol-impaired driving. A secondary goal was to report if using AT has led to any unintended consequences, in particular greater alcohol consumption. Method: We identified relevant academic articles, new articles, government reports, and other documents (English only) through the University of Chicago library, Google Scholar, and Google Search. We also included published articles recommended by peers. Key search terms included: alternative transportation; safe rides; designated driver; alcohol-impaired driving; alcohol consumption, cost effectiveness; and reduce drunk driving. Initially, we identified 168 potentially relevant sources, of which only 57 were academic articles. After a thorough review, we narrowed down the number of relevant articles to 125 including some background articles and government reports. Results: Some AT programs produced reductions in one or more of the following outcomes: (1) impaired driving; (2) impaired driving crashes; (3) driving under the influence (DUI) arrests; and (4) traffic crashes in general, but others were not shown to be effective. A few programs resulted in greater self-reported alcohol use, but there were no significant findings indicating that drinking when using AT led to an increase in alcohol-related harms such as public intoxication, assaults, or other alcohol-related crime. Of the studies that conducted a cost-benefit analysis, most showed that AT programs yielded a positive benefit, but these studies did not include a sufficient number of variables to be considered true cost-benefit analyses. Conclusions: There is mixed evidence regarding the effectiveness of AT programs. Evaluations with more rigorous quasi-experimental and experimental designs are needed to identify which types of AT programs work best for different types of communities and target groups. Practical Applications: The literature review and synthesis revealed that the most successful AT programs typically have some of these attributes: (1) social acceptance; (2) high level of public awareness; (3) low cost; (4) year-round availability; (5) provide rides to and from drinking venues; (6) several sponsors that provide funding); (7) user convenience; and (8) perceived safety. 相似文献

Male dimorphisms are particularly conspicuous examples of alternative reproductive strategies. The male forceps length dimorphism
in the European earwig Forficula auricularia has long been considered an example of a status- (body size) dependent male dimorphism. In this paper, I test three hypotheses
relating to the dimorphism of F. auricularia. First, that the dimorphism is status dependent and determined by nutrition. Second, that the dimorphism is a density-dependent
adaptation. Third, that there is a genetic basis to population differences in morph frequency seen in the field. These hypotheses
were tested by rearing two populations in a split-family rearing design with two diets and two densities. Populations of male
earwigs reared in the common garden differed in forceps length and relative forceps length. The populations also differed
in the morph frequencies, with 40 versus 26% long-forceped males. These results confirm the notion that there is a genotype-by-environment
interaction that determines the morph frequency in a population. There were only minor effects of density on male forceps
length and no influence of density on the male dimorphism. In accordance with the hypothesis that the morphs are status-dependent
alternatives, large-forceped males only arose on the high-protein diet that produced earwigs of a large body size. However,
not all large males produced the long-forceped phenotype. I put forward an extension of the status-dependent dimorphism model
that may account for the pattern of forceps dimorphism in this species.

In the social organization of feral horses, adult males compete to monopolize groups or bands of females, sometimes called
harems. Alternative male strategies are to remain alone or with other bachelors or, less commonly, to accept subordinate status
within a harem. The hypothesis that dominant harem stallion status confers a reproductive advantage was tested in free-ranging
feral horses. The presence of foals in harems headed by vasectomized (VSX) versus intact stallions was used to assess the
ability of these stallions to control reproduction in their harems. Of harems headed by VSX stallions, 17 and 33% contained
foals during years 2 and 3 post-treatment, respectively. In contrast, 86 and 80% of harems headed by non-VSX stallions contained
foals in those years. Acquisition of pregnant mares appeared more likely than sneak copulations by bachelor stallions to account
for foals in harems with a single stallion. However, most foals were born into harems that included a subordinate stallion,
an occurrence that was undoubtedly exacerbated by the extended breeding season resulting from the sterility of the harem stallion.
Thus, in comparing alternative reproductive tactics, bachelors appeared less successful than subordinate stallions within
a harem. However, the highest reproductive success was achieved by the harem stallion, further demonstrating that alternative
tactics are not equally profitable.

A growing awareness of the value of indigenous knowledge has prompted calls for its use within disaster risk reduction. The use of indigenous knowledge alongside scientific knowledge is increasingly advocated but there is as yet no clearly developed framework demonstrating how the two may be integrated to reduce community vulnerability to environmental hazards. This paper presents such a framework, using a participatory approach in which relevant indigenous and scientific knowledge may be integrated to reduce a community's vulnerability to environmental hazards. Focusing on small island developing states it presents an analysis of the need for such a framework alongside the difficulties of incorporating indigenous knowledge. This is followed by an explanation of the various processes within the framework, drawing on research completed in Papua New Guinea. This framework is an important first step in identifying how indigenous and scientific knowledge may be integrated to reduce community vulnerability to environmental hazards. 相似文献

By mid-1990 the National Park Service (NPS) must present to Congress recommendations for managing overflights of at least ten national parks. The authors examine the potential role of formal negotiation in setting overflight policy in these parks by reviewing the overflight controversy at Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP). Regulations controlling overflights of the GCNP are only now being implemented after a 17-year conflict that culminated in a congressionally mandated solution. The authors review this controversy and find that, contrary to common perception, the number of park visitors bothered by overflights is not small but roughly equals the number of airborne visitors (up to 450,000 per year). On the basis of this investigation, the authors determine that formal negotiation would have been an appropriate policy-making process because of the clearly defined and limited number of parties and issues involved. Considering the number of park visitors that will continue to be affected by this issue, the authors conclude that formal negotiations should be considered for overflight problems involving other parks. Such negotiations should be park-specific. Few studies have explored the relationships between nation‐building, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Focusing on small island developing states, this paper examines nation‐building in Timor‐Leste, a small island developing state that recently achieved independence. Nation‐building in Timor‐Leste is explored in the context of disaster risk reduction, which necessarily includes climate change adaptation. The study presents a synopsis of Timor‐Leste's history and its nation‐building efforts as well as an overview of the state of knowledge of disaster risk reduction including climate change adaptation. It also offers an analysis of significant gaps and challenges in terms of vertical and horizontal governance, large donor presence, data availability and the integration of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation for nation‐building in Timor‐Leste. Relevant and applicable lessons are provided from other small island developing states to assist Timor‐Leste in identifying its own trajectory out of underdevelopment while it builds on existing strengths. 相似文献

Australian reporting requirements for native vegetation require improved spatial and temporal information on the anthropogenic
effects on vegetation. This includes better linkage of information on vegetation type (e.g., native vegetation association),
extent and change, vegetation condition, or modification. The Vegetation Assets, States and Transitions (VAST) framework is
presented as a means for ordering vegetation by degree of anthropogenic modification as a series of condition states, from
a residual or base-line condition through to total removal. The VAST framework facilitates mapping and accounting for change
and trends in the status and condition of vegetation. The framework makes clear the links between land management and vegetation
condition states, provides a mechanism for describing the consequences of land management practices on vegetation condition,
and contributes to an understanding of resilience. VAST is a simple communication and reporting tool designed to assist in
describing and accounting for anthropogenic modification of vegetation. A benchmark is identified for each vegetation association.
Benchmarks are based on structure, composition, and current regenerative capacity. This article describes the application
of the VAST framework as a consistent national framework to translate and compile existing mapped information on the modification
of native vegetation. We discuss the correspondence between these compiled VAST datasets at national and regional scales and
describe their relevance for natural resource policy and planning. 相似文献
