Summary The Australian bombardier beetle,Mystropomus regularis, sprays a mixture of quinones (1,4-benzoquinone, 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2-ethyl-1,4-benzoquinone) and hydrocarbons (principallyn-pentadecane). The defensive fluid ist generated explosively in two-chambered glands, and is ejected audibly and hot (maximal recorded temperature = 59°C).Mystropomus is a member of the paussoid lineage of bombardiers. In common with other members of the group, it has a pair of elytral flanges (flanges of Coanda), associated with the gland openings, that serve as launching guides for anteriorly-aimed ejections of spray. Summary. Males of dacine tephritids, Bactrocera carambolae and B. dorsalis are strongly attracted to, and compulsively feed on methyl eugenol (ME), a potent attractant for many Bactrocera species. While ME was shown to be biotransformed into phenylpropanoids, 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol and (E)-coniferyl alcohol, and temporarily stored in the rectal gland of male B. dorsalis prior to release during courtship at dusk, B. carambolae male produces only the latter compound along with its de novo synthesized pheromone components. Both species were also shown to have different age-related response, sensitivity and consumption
levels of ME. Here, we monitored and compared temporal changes in the accumulation profiles of these phenylpropanoids by the
two sibling species, with male rectal glands being individually excised at different time intervals from 15 minutes to 20
days after initial ME feeding and analysed quantitatively. Results are discussed in light of plant-fruit fly co-evolution

In some lizards, female mate choice is influenced by chemicals secreted by males, e.g., via the femoral glands. Secretions
of the femoral glands are under direct androgenic control and vary seasonally with androgen production. However, whether increased
testosterone (T) levels affect the concentration and chemical composition of secretions or their attractiveness to females
is unknown. We manipulated T levels of male Iberian wall lizards, Podarcis hispanica, with silastic implants. Differential tongue-flick rates indicated that females detected and discriminated between femoral
secretions of control and T-implanted males based on chemical cues alone. Females showed greater responses to secretions of
T-males, which might suggest that T increased the concentration of chemical signals. Further analyses by gas chromatography–mass
spectrometry indicated that T supplementation induced qualitative changes in lipid composition of femoral secretions. T-males
had decreased relative proportions of cholesta-5,7-dien-3-ol in secretions, which might be related to the negative effects
of T on the immune system and on lipid metabolism. However, experiments of choice of males’ scent showed that females neither
preferred nor avoided the scent marks of T-males but preferred males that maintained higher proportions of cholesta-5,7-dien-3-ol
in secretions, independently of the experimental manipulation. Thus, because this steroid is negatively affected by T, there
might be trade-offs among increasing T levels to increase the production of chemical secretions, maintain metabolism, and

Social parasites exploit their host’s communication system to usurp resources and reproduce. In the honeybee, Apis mellifera, worker reproduction is regulated by pheromones produced by the queen and the brood. Workers usually reproduce when the queen is removed and young brood is absent. However, Cape honeybee workers, Apis mellifera capensis, are facultative intraspecific social parasites and can take over reproduction from the host queen. Investigating the manner in which parasitic workers compete with host queens pheromonally can help us to understand how such parasitism can evolve and how reproductive division of labour is regulated. In A. m. capensis, worker reproduction is associated with the production of queen-like pheromones. Using pheromonal contest experiments, we show that Apis mellifera scutellata queens do not prevent the production of queen-like mandibular gland compounds by the parasites. Given the importance of these pheromones in acquiring reproductive status, our data suggest that the single invasive lineage of parasitic workers occurring in the range of A. m. scutellata was selected for its superior ability to produce these signals despite the presence of a queen. Such resistance was indeed less frequent amongst other potentially parasitic lineages. Resistance to reproductive regulation by host queens is probably the key factor that facilitates the evolution of social parasitism by A. m. capensis workers. It constitutes a mechanism that allows workers to evade reproductive division of labour and to follow an alternative reproductive option by acquiring direct fitness in foreign colonies instead of inclusive fitness in their natal nests. 相似文献

Summary. By means of gas chromatography, gas
chromatographic coupled mass spectrometry and behavioral
analysis the major trail pheromone components from the
hindgut of the formicine species Camponotus castaneus, C.
balzani and C. sericeiventris were identified. The trail
pheromone of C. castaneus is 3,5-dimethyl-6-(1-methylpropyl)-
tetrahydro-2H-pyran- 2-one, and that of the other
two species is 3,4-dihydro-8-hydroxy-3,5,7-trimethylisocoumarin.
Although both compounds release precise trail
following behavior in the respective species, the major
recruitment signal in the three Camponotus species appears
to be formic acid discharged from the poison gland. The
composition of the Dufour gland secretions of C. castaneus
and C. sericeiventris is similar, but that of the hypertrophied
Dufour gland of C. balzani is very different from any other
Camponotus Dufour gland content described up to date: it
contains large amounts of esters, the major compound of
which is octyl hexanoate, which makes up 97% a/a of the

Socially dominant males often signal their status to rival males and/or females. We tested the hypotheses that Lacerta monticola femoral gland secretions and copulatory plugs convey chemical information about male identity and dominance status. We estimated male dominance status by staging male–male agonistic encounters in a neutral arena. We then conducted two experiments to compare male tongue-flick behavior toward chemical stimuli consisting of cotton swabs bearing (1) deionized water (control), the lizard’s own femoral secretions, and the femoral secretions of another male and (2) phosphate-buffered saline solution (control), the lizard’s own plug products, and the plug products of another male. Results indicate that males discriminated their own femoral secretions and plugs from those of other males. They also discriminated morphological attributes of other males that were associated with dominance status based on chemical cues arising from femoral secretions and discriminated the dominance status of other males based on chemical cues arising from the plugs. Femoral secretions that convey information about male identity and dominance status may be hypothesized to function in the establishment of L. monticola dominance hierarchies through scent-marking of territories. We suggest that copulatory plugs and femoral secretions may allow males to scent-mark the female body and postulate that this behavior may influence male and female reproductive decisions under selective pressures of sperm competition. 相似文献

采用酶学和组织学方法,研究了镉(Cd)对背角无齿蚌(Anodonta woodiana)消化腺和斧足组织中超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)和过氧化氢酶(CAT)活性和组织形态结构的影响.Cd浓度设置为4.22、8.43、16.86、33.72和67.45 mg·L-1,处理时间为24 h、48 h、72 h和96 h.结果显示,与对照组相比,同一时间随着Cd浓度的增加,消化腺中SOD和CAT活性,在24 h呈现升高的趋势;96 h消化腺中SOD活性逐渐升高,差异极显著(p0.01);48 h和72 h呈现先升后降的趋势.斧足中SOD和CAT在72 h和96 h时活性升高明显,差异显著或极显著(p0.01,p0.05).Cd浓度67.45 mg·L-1处理24 h,消化腺组织细胞结构变化不明显;在48 h以后,消化管间结缔组织松散,腺体结构损伤严重,上皮细胞形态结构异常,细胞界限模糊,甚至消失;细胞膜肿胀、变形;有的细胞核碎裂、明显肿胀甚至消失,上皮细胞部分与基膜分离、脱落;斧足组织未出现显著变化和损伤.研究表明,消化腺在酶活性和组织结构上对镉的反应较快且更具规律性,而且具有明显的时间和剂量效应关系.但是,斧足对镉的胁迫反应与消化腺相比较为迟缓,说明组织之间对重金属的敏感性具有差异性. 相似文献

Caste-specific pheromone biosynthesis is a prerequisite for reproductive skew in the honeybee. Nonetheless, this process is
not hardwired but plastic, in that egg-laying workers produce a queen-like pheromone. Studies with Dufour’s gland pheromone
revealed that, in vivo, workers’ gland biosynthesis matches the social status of the worker, i.e., sterile workers showed
a worker-like pattern whereas fertile workers showed a queen-like pattern (production of the queen-specific esters). However,
when incubated in vitro, the gland spontaneously exhibits the queen-like pattern, irrespective of its original worker type,
prompting the notion that ester production in workers is under inhibitory control that is queen-dependent. We tested this
hypothesis by exposing queen or worker Dufour’s glands in vitro to brain extracts of queens, queenright (sterile) workers
and males. Unexpectedly, worker brain extracts activated the queen-like esters biosynthesis in workers’ Dufour’s gland. This
stimulation was gender-specific; queen or worker brains demonstrated a stimulatory activity, but male brains did not. Queen
gland could not be further stimulated. Bioassays with heated and filtered extracts indicate that the stimulatory brain factor
is below 3,000 Da. We suggest that pheromone production in Dufour’s gland is under dual, negative–positive control. Under
queenright conditions, the inhibitor is released and blocks ester biosynthesis, whereas under queenless conditions, the activator
is released, activating ester biosynthesis in the gland. This is consistent with the hypothesis that queenright workers are
unequivocally recognized as non-fertile, whereas queenless workers try to become “false queens” as part of the reproductive

We investigated how information about family membership is coded by the individually specific anal gland secretion (AGS)
in the beaver, Castor canadensis. Because beavers live in strict family units and relatives share more features in the AGS profile than non-relatives, family
members share more AGS features than non-family members. Therefore, family recognition seems to be a natural consequence of
the more specific kin recognition. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed two possibilities in coding for family membership
using the multi-component AGS: either two (female) to three (male) AGS compounds or many compounds were used, but we were
not able to determine which possibility is more likely. Compounds were not equally important in coding family membership information,
and the interactions among compounds were complex. We attempted to reconstruct a lineage tree for the relationship among different
families using two–three or many compounds. We found there was no significant difference for trees constructed by using few
or many compounds in either males or females. However, the trees derived from male compounds and female compounds lacked good
congruence.
