In several ant species, colonies are founded by small groups of queens (pleometrosis), which coexist until the first workers eclose, after which all but one queen is killed. It has been hypothesized that, by producing a larger cohort of workers, cooperating queens may increase colony success during brood raids, a form of competition in which brood and workers from losing nests are absorbed into winning colonies. To test whether this benefit is sufficient to favor pleometrosis, newly mated queens of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta were assembled in groups of one, two, three, or four, reared in the laboratory until the first workers eclosed, then planted in the field in replicated assemblages. The proportion of colonies engaging in brood raids increased with average foundress number per nest and with colony density but was unaffected by variance in foundress number among interacting colonies. Within mixed assemblages of single-queen and multiple-queen colonies, queen number had no effect on the likelihood of engaging in raids or the probability of nest survival through the brood raiding period. However, following nearly 30% of raids, queens moved to new nests and displaced the resident queens. When queen relocation and subsequent mortality were accounted for, it was found that the survival of queens from four-queen groups was substantially higher than that of solitary queens. By contrast, the survival of queens from two-queen colonies was no greater than that of solitary queens. These results show that the competitive advantages of multiple-queen colonies are sufficient to counterbalance the increased mortality of queens within groups only when the number of foundresses is greater than two and when colonies are founded at high density. When colonies lose brood raids, the workers appear to abandon their mothers to join surviving colonies. However, in laboratory experiments, queens attempting to enter foreign nests were significantly more likely to displace the resident queen if their own daughters were present within the invaded nest. Thus, workers may be able to bias the probability that their mother rejoins them and displaces competing queens. 相似文献

Eggs of several brood parasites have thicker and stronger shells than expected for their size. The present study evaluated
the puncture resistance hypothesis for the occurrence of thick-shelled eggs in common cuckoos Cuculus canorus by investigating costs of cuckoo egg ejection in four Acrocephalus warblers—the great reed warbler A. arundinaceus, reed warbler A. scirpaceus, marsh warbler A. palustris and sedge warbler A. schoenobaenus. The three latter species all suffered ejection costs, while ejection was not costly in the larger great reed warbler. The
occurrence of ejection costs was negatively related to host bill size. In the marsh warbler, we compared ejection costs in
naturally parasitized nests and two experimental treatments, in which broods were parasitized artificially with great reed
warbler and conspecific eggs. Hosts damaged their own eggs significantly more often when ejecting the thick-shelled cuckoo
eggs than when ejecting the similarly sized but thinner-shelled great reed warbler eggs, providing some support for the puncture
resistance hypothesis. Ejection of conspecific eggs did not involve any costs. Furthermore, contrary to predictions derived
from the laying damage hypothesis, there was no evidence that egg damage was associated with cuckoo egg laying. Hosts damaging
their own eggs during ejection were more likely to subsequently desert their clutches than those that did not. The frequency
of clutches smeared with the contents of the ejected egg were positively related to the hypothesized difficulty of foreign
egg puncturing. Potential advantages of thicker shells in common cuckoo eggs are discussed. 相似文献

Much of our knowledge concerning the functions of territorial behaviour and how territories are defended by individuals comes from research on birds. The vast majority of this work has focused on temperate zone breeding territoriality in which territories are defended most obviously by males. Our understanding of the female role in territory defence is limited because they are less conspicuous and much harder to observe. We studied sex roles in territory maintenance and defence in a duetting, resident neotropical passerine, the white-bellied antbird (Myrmeciza longipes). This species maintains territories and pair bonds year round and both sexes sing and actively participate in territory defence. We performed a series of playback experiments throughout the dry (non-breeding) and wet (breeding) seasons. We exposed territorial pairs to three types of stimuli including: (1) single sex, male only songs, (2) single sex, female only songs, and (3) both sex songs/duets. Contrary to findings for most other tropical species, individuals defended their territories with equal levels of aggression regardless of stimuli. Furthermore, sex roles were very different, with males responding more aggressively than females to all stimuli throughout both seasons. Both males and females consistently responded more aggressively to territorial intrusions during the dry season than during the wet season, likely because food abundance is low in the dry season and territory value is high. Our analysis of duetting behaviour suggests that duets do not serve a significant role in mate guarding, or territory defence. 相似文献

Summary. Mountain birches are deciduous trees consisting of several clonal and partly autonomous ramets. Autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata, is an extremely harmful pest of mountain birches that during outbreak years may cause the death of trees over large areas.
During the larval development of E. autumnata, leaf characters and nutritional suitability vary considerably both temporally and spatially among and within mountain birches.
Compared to variation between trees, however, the extent of within-tree variation is known for only a limited number of potentially
defensive traits. Plant oxidases, polyphenoloxidases (PPOs) and peroxidases (PODs) may play an important part in dictating
the suitability of a tree for plant-eating animals, including E. autumnata. In this study, we observed changes in the activities of oxidative and antioxidative enzymes along leaf development during
the larval period of E. autumnata. We also estimated the relative amounts of spatial variation among and within trees. Our results show that POD activities
were remarkably high during the rapid elongation growth phase of leaves but decreased with leaf maturation. Thus PODs are
suggested to take part in leaf elongation growth. Time and within tree variation accounted for the most of variation in POD
activities whereas there was no among tree variation. In contrast, the activities of antioxidative CATs, which act as antagonists
to PODs, were low in young leaves and increased towards leaf maturation, reflecting an increase in the oxidative status of
source leaves. Within tree variation accounted for the most of the variation in CAT activities. The absolute PPO activities
decreased along leaf growth due to the dilution effect whereas the specific activity of PPOs, which has been shown to be defensive
against E. autumnata larvae, did not vary temporally that might reflect the importance of these enzymes in the defence of birches. Acidic PPOs
showed marked within- and among-tree variation, which may impact herbivores performance on certain genotypes and increase
larval mobility within the tree canopy. 相似文献

Summary 2-spot ladybirds secrete alkaloid (adaline)-rich defence fluid (reflex blood) in response to predator attack. Reflex fluid was collected from individual ladybirds and weighed and the alkaloid content measured by GC. The amount of fluid produced built up rapidly following winter hibernation in animals feeding on aphids. The concentration of adaline in the fluid was highest in the first bleeding after winter hibernation. A large sample of beetles was reflex bled several times. Significant among beetle variation was found in the amount of fluid produced and the concentration of the reflex blood. The results are discussed in relation to the possibility that 2-spot ladybirds are Batesian mimics of 7-spot ladybirds and to the possible functions of adaline. 相似文献

Summary All Hydradephaga investigated so far crawl onto land when exposed to an increase in water temperature and light intensity and spread the secretion from their pygidial glands over the body surface (secretion-grooming). The secretions have antimicrobial properties and are mainly applied to hydrofuge body regions important for aquatic respiration. Experimental prevention of secretion-grooming leads to the loss of the respiratory air bubble and a significant increase in mortality. These findings support the view that the secretion-grooming of adephagous aquatic beetles, like in some aquatic Heteroptera, inhibits the growth of microor-ganisms, thus preventing the contamination and wetting of the cuticular respiratory structures. Thus it keeps functional the air-retaining hydrophobous body regions essential for aquatic respiration. A model is presented on how secretion-grooming may have evolved in the Hydradephaga. Other possible functions of the pygidial gland secretions are discussed. 相似文献

Females of many socially monogamous bird species commonly engage in extra-pair copulations. Assuming that extra-pair males are more attractive than the females’ social partners and that attractiveness has a heritable component, sex allocation theory predicts facultative overproduction of sons among extra-pair offspring (EPO) as sons benefit more than daughters from inheriting their father’s attractiveness traits. Here, we present a large-scale, three-year study on sex ratio variation in a passerine bird, the coal tit (Parus ater). Molecular sexing in combination with paternity analysis revealed no evidence for a male-bias in EPO sex ratios compared to their within-pair maternal half-siblings. Our main conclusion, therefore, is that facultative sex allocation to EPO is absent in the coal tit, in accordance with findings in several other species. Either there is no net selection for a deviation from random sex ratio variation (e.g. because extra-pair mating may serve goals different from striving for ‘attractiveness genes’) or evolutionary constraints preclude the evolution of precise maternal sex ratio adjustment. It is interesting to note that, however, we found broods without EPO as well as broods without mortality to be relatively female-biased compared to broods with EPO and mortality, respectively. We were unable to identify any environmental or parental variable to co-vary with brood sex ratios. There was no significant repeatability of sex ratios in consecutive broods of individual females that would hint at some idiosyncratic maternal sex ratio adjustment. Further research is needed to resolve the biological significance of the correlation between brood sex ratios and extra-pair paternity and mortality incidence, respectively. 相似文献

Summary. Myrmecophytic plants use obligate ant mutualists as a constitutive
indirect defence mechanism. These plants often produce cellular food bodies (FBs) to
nourish their resident ants. Lipids, proteins, and even highly specialised compounds
such as glycogen have been reported from FBs, but detailed chemical analyses of FB
composition have so far been presented only for Southeast Asian Macaranga
and Central American Piper myrmecophytes. Here we
report the chemical composition of FBs of five myrmecophytic Acacia
(Fabaceae) species from Mexico using HPLC (carbohydrates and proteins) and GC-MS
(lipids). Feeding experiments revealed no hints on any use of external food sources
by the inhabiting Pseudomyrmex ants. These ants
obviously rely completely on FBs and extrafloral nectar provided by their hosts.
The total content of nutrients in Acacia FBs was 15-25% of FB
dry mass, being much lower than in Macaranga or
Piper FBs. Proteins were dominating (8-14 % dm)
in Acacia FBs and thus were present in higher amounts than in
Macaranga FBs, yet in lower amounts than in
Piper. Lipids contributed 1-9 %
of dry mass, showing a lower proportion than in FBs of Macaranga
or Piper. Carbohydrates made up 3-11 % dm, reaching
in most Acacia species the same range as observed in
Macaranga and in Piper FBs.
Water content was 18-24 % of FB fresh mass, and structural tissue obviously made up
a much higher proportion in Acacia FBs than in
Macaranga or Piper
FBs. Both characters might represent an adaptation to producing FBs unprotected at
the leaf tips under dry conditions. Acacia FBs
contain all amino acids and all fatty acids that are considered essential for
insects, and their contents of lipids and proteins are higher than in the leaves
from which they are ontogenetically derived. This indicates a putatively adaptive
enrichment of nutritionally valuable compounds in structures functioning as ant-food. 相似文献

Previous research has suggested that parental condition may affect offspring mortality patterns by affecting offspring testosterone levels. Accordingly, we hypothesized that there is a relationship between offspring testosterone concentration and survival during the early nestling period, and that both are influenced by parent age/experience and by prey availability. We tested our hypothesis on tawny owls Strix aluco in their first and third known breeding seasons, when they bred either in adverse or mild weather conditions, in Duna-Ipoly National Park, Hungary. Plasma testosterone concentrations of the nestlings were analyzed and related to parental condition, hatching order and nestling mortality. Inexperienced parents breeding in all weather conditions and experienced parents breeding in adverse conditions were both in poor condition compared to experienced parents breeding in mild conditions. Parents in poor condition produced broods with large between-sibling differences in testosterone concentrations and their later-hatched nestlings (which had low testosterone levels) died during the early nestling period, whereas parents in good condition produced broods with lower variation in offspring testosterone concentrations and all offspring survived the early nestling period. We discuss environmental influences on the amount of testosterone deposited in eggs, and also how maternal testosterone might induce those mechanisms producing testosterone in the nestlings.Communicated by M. Brood cycling, the alternation of periods of courtship and mating activity ("mating phase") with days of full brood care
("parental phase"), and total filial cannibalism, the consumption of all current offspring by a parent, have been interpreted
as a response to the conflicting demands faced by parental males during the breeding season. Under the assumption that these
two behaviours result from trade-offs among mating, caring and feeding, the strategy adopted by the male should depend on
egg number and age. This hypothesis was tested in the scissors-tail sergeant (Abudefduf sexfasciatus), a common tropical damselfish. Observations of undisturbed males and a brood reduction experiment confirmed all theoretical
predictions. The shift from the mating to parental phase occurred when an appropriate number of eggs had been obtained. When
the brood was reduced on the first day of the parental phase, males often reverted to the mating phase, but never did so if
the manipulation occurred on the second or third day. Only broods that were smaller than average were consumed by the parental
male. Artificial reduction of the brood increased the incidence of total filial cannibalism, but the probability of cannibalism
decreased with brood age.
