The Atlantic Slope Consortium (ASC) is a project designed to develop and test a set of indicators in coastal systems that are ecologically appropriate, economically reasonable, and relevant to society. The suite of indicators will produce integrated assessments of the condition, health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems based on ecological and socioeconomic information compiled at the scale of estuarine segments and small watersheds. The research mandate of the ASC project is the following:
Using a universe of watersheds, covering a range of social choices, we ask two questions:
  • ? How “good” can the environment be, given those social choices?
  • ? What is the intellectual model of condition within those choices, i.e., what are the causes of condition and what are the steps for improvement?
As a basis for compiling ecological indicators, a watershed classification system was required for the experimental design. The goal was to develop approximately five categories of watersheds for each physiographic province, utilizing landscape and land use parameters that would be predictive of aquatic resource condition. All 14-digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) watersheds in the Mid-Atlantic region would then be classified according to the regime. Five parameters were utilized for the classification: three land cover categories, consisting of forested, agricultural, and urban, median slope or median elevation, and total variance of land covers in 1-km-radius circles positioned on all stream convergence points in a specified 14-digit?HUC watershed. Cluster analysis utilizing these five parameters resulted in approximately five well-defined watershed classes per physiographic province. The distribution of all watersheds in the Mid-Atlantic region across these categories provides a unique report on the probable condition of watersheds in the region.  相似文献

Female mate choice based on visual traits appears to be rare in lizards. Field observations suggest that females of the lizard Lacerta monticola preferred to mate with larger/older males. Although older males are usually green and larger, and younger males brown and smaller, there is some overlap in size and coloration between age classes. Thus, visual cues may not always be reliable indicators of a male's age. We hypothesized that female mate-choice preferences may be based on males' pheromones, which might transmit information about characteristics such as age. In a laboratory experiment, we analyzed the effect of age of males on attractiveness of their scents to females. When we offered scents of two males of different age, females associated preferentially with scents of older males. This suggested that females were able to assess the age of males by chemical signals alone, and that females preferred to be in areas scent-marked by older males. Thus, females may increase their opportunities to mate with males of high quality, or may avoid harassment by sneaking young males. This result agreed with field observations on females mating with old males, and rejection of advances by young males. Our results also suggested that female preference for older males may depend on their own body size. Large females showed a strong preference for older males, whereas smaller females were not so selective. This, together with males' preference for large females, might lead to size-assortative matings. We suggest that the quality and/or quantity of male pheromones could communicate to the female heritable male genetic quality (i.e. age) and thereby serve as the basis of adaptive female choice in lizards.Communicated by W.E. Male-male competition is assumed to limit female choice of mates, but it may also help females to choose the most vigorous males. We studied the mate sampling behaviour of female black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) at spatially unstable leks on ice-covered lakes. In the absence of territories and site-dependence in outcomes of fights, the male dominance hierarchy is very evident on ice. When being courted by dominant males, females frequently tried to approach other males. This was frequently prevented because (1) the courting male and the approached male were involved in physical fight, or (2) the dominant male followed the female and the approached male escaped and avoided contact with him. These behaviours express dominance relationships, and the female behaviour could be considered as incitive. Rank in dominance hierarchy was a significant predictor of male mating success. In this case competition between males and female choice worked in parallel favouring male traits correlated with dominance.  相似文献

Chorusing males of the neotropical treefrog Hyla microcephala call in distinct bouts punctuated by periods of silence, a pattern known as unison bout singing. Schwartz (1991) previously tested and refuted the hypotheses that males periodically stop calling either because of a female preference for males that call cyclically, or because high ambient noise levels inhibit vocal activity. Males of H. microcephala are vocally responsive to the calls of other males, and during calling bouts their rate of note production can exceed 10,000 per hour. In natural choruses females preferentially pair with males that call at the higher rates. Because females can pair with males over many hours, males may stop calling periodically to save energy so they can continue to call for the entire period that females are available. We directly tested this energy conservation hypothesis by collecting samples of males early in the evening just after chorusing commenced and later when chorusing had ended for the night. Trunk muscles (internal and external oblique), which are responsible for the airflow associated with note production, were dissected, frozen, and their glycogen content measured. Data on calling behavior were obtained for late-evening samples. Individual calling behavior was not correlated with a males final glycogen level. In addition, many males ended their calling before glycogen reserves were exhausted, indicating that factors other than energy can determine when males finally stop chorusing, However, the biochemical assays supported the energy conservation hypothesis. Unless chorusing was punctuated by pauses, most males would have been unable to sustain high rates of calling for an entire evening without exhausting glycogen reserves in their trunk muscles. Because the time females pair with males is probably unpredictable to males, the ability to call for long periods may improve a males chances of mating.  相似文献

This study investigates the importance of mate guarding for males and females in the facultatively polygynous blue tit Parus caeruleus. We present observational data in combination with a paternity analysis using DNA fingerprinting to show that (1) male blue tits guard their mate, since they stay closer to their mate, initiate fewer flights and follow their mate more often during the female's presumed fertile period; (2) polygynous males do not suffer more from lost paternity despite lower mate guarding; (3) in monogamous pairs there is either no relation or a positive relation (depending upon the variable measured) between measures of mate guarding intensity and the proportion of extra-pair young in the nest; and (4) monogamous males that are more often followed by their fertile female suffered less from lost paternity. We conclude that, despite mate guarding, paternity seems to be largely under female control and unattractive males guarding their mate are making the best of a bad situation. Experimental evidence is provided showing that when males were temporarily removed from their territory, their mate suffered from increased harassment from neighbouring males that intruded in the territory and tried to copulate with the female. Almost all of these copulation attempts were unsuccessful because females refused to copulate. We conclude that mate guarding may be beneficial for females because harassment by neigbouring males is prevented.  相似文献

Sexual selection and the evolutionary effects of copying mate choice   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
We examine the evolutionary consequences of copying mate choice using models in which the preferences of younger females are affected by the mate choices that they observe older females making. We introduce two models of copying, termed single mate copying and mass copying, corresponding to situations in which immature females imprint on the choices of only one or of a very large number of older females, respectively. Female mating preferences are assumed to evolve only through cultural evolution, while the male trait on which they act is inherited either via a haploid autosomal or a Y-linked locus. Results show that the preference and male trait can rapidly coevolve, with a positive frequencey-dependent advantage to the more common male trait allele. This process can cause a display trait that lowers male viability to increase in a population. Mass copying results in stronger frequency dependence than does single mate copying. Mass copying and, under some conditions, single mate copying lead to two alterative stable equilibria for the male trait. Neither copying model supports variation at the male trait locus, and copying makes it more difficult for a novel male trait phenotype to spread. Correspondence to: M. Kirkpatrick  相似文献

The stream goby Rhinogobius sp. DA (dark color type) shows exclusive paternal care of the eggs. Males court females in the stream current and previous field observations suggest that females favor males that perform their courtship display in faster water currents, and that such males may have high parental ability because of good physical condition. To validate these observations we examined female choice under controlled laboratory conditions. Mate choice experiments indicated clearly that females preferred males that courted in the faster currents, whereas neither sexually different morphological traits, such as body size, nor the water current alone were important. The experiments with food supply treatments indicated that only males of high physical condition are able to court in the fast currents. Furthermore, males that courted in the fast currents achieved good egg survival, whereas males that were unable to court in the currents did not, due to cannibalism of their egg clutch. Thus, the maximum speed of the water current in which a male courts should be indicative of his quality and of the subsequent survival of eggs under his care. We conclude that Rhinogobius sp. DA females utilize the male courtship display in the water current as an honest indicator of parental quality.Communicated by K. LindströmAn erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

We investigated male mate preferences in relation to the perceived risk of sperm competition in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a freshwater fish with a promiscuous mating system. Our laboratory experiments revealed that male mate choice behaviour is not influenced by the presence of rival males that are merely in close proximity to a potential mate, as there was no significant difference in the amount of time that males spent with females that were recently either alone or in close proximity to four rival males. Male mate choice behaviour was, however, strongly influenced by the presence of rival males in a second experiment, where those rivals were permitted to copulate with one of the females. In that situation, males spent significantly more time with, and directed significantly more sigmoid courtship displays toward, females that they had recently seen alone compared to females they had seen receiving forced copulations from up to four rival males. Our results therefore indicate that male guppies are sensitive to the risk of sperm competition and alter their mate choice behaviour in an adaptive fashion.Communicated by K. Lindström  相似文献

We tested female choice for male wing and tarsus length and body mass in the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a species in which males average about 10% smaller than females. We also studied how male characters are related to their hunting success. In the laboratory, females preferred lighter males with shorter tarsi as mates, if the difference in those characters between competing males was larger than average. Lighter and shorter-winged males seemed to be better hunters than heavier and longer-winged males. Field observations in a year in which voles were scarce suggested that shorter-winged males were also better food providers in courtship feeding than longer-winged males, although in good vole years such a relationship was not found. We argue that females may prefer to pair with smaller males, because they have higher flight performance and better hunting success than heavier males. By doing so, females may gain direct breeding advantages. We conclude that both female choosiness and the hunting efficiency of males well contribute to reversed sexual size dimorphism (RSD, females larger than males) in the kestrel.
