Radioactive markers are useful in dating lead deposition patterns from industrialization in peat archive. Peat cores were collected in an ombrotrophic peat bog in the Great Hinggan Mountains in Northeast China in September 2008 and dated using 210Pb and 137Cs radiometric techniques. The mosses in both cores were examined systematically for dry bulk density, water and ash content. Lead also was measured using atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES). Both patterned peat profiles were preserved well without evident anthropogenic disturbance. Unsupported 210Pb and 137Cs decreased with the depth in both of the two sample cores. The 210Pb chronologies were established using the constant rate of supply model (CRS) and are in good agreement with the 137Cs time marker. Recent atmospheric 210Pb flux in Great Hinggan Mountains peat bog was estimated to be 337 Bq m−2 y−1, which is consistent with published data for the region. Lead deposition rate in this region was also derived from these two peat cores and ranged from 24.6 to 55.8 mg m−2 y−1 with a range of Pb concentration of 14-262 μg g−1. The Pb deposition patterns were consistent with increasing industrialization over the last 135-170 y, with a peak of production and coal burning in the last 50 y in Northeast China. This work presents a first estimation of atmospheric Pb deposition rate in peatlands in China and suggests an increasing trend of environmental pollution due to anthropogenic contaminants in the atmosphere. More attention should be paid to current local pollution problems, and society should take actions to seek a balance between economic development and environmental protection.  相似文献

Structure of flames propagating through aluminum particles clouds and combustion processes of the particles have been examined experimentally to understand the fundamental behavior of a metal dust explosion. The combustion process of individual aluminum particles in a flame propagating through the aluminum particles cloud has been recorded by using a high-speed video camera with a microscopic optical system, and analyzed. The flame is shown to be consisted of a preheat zone of about 3 mm thick, followed by a combustion zone of 5–7 mm thick. In the combustion zone, discrete gas phase flames are observed around each aluminum particle. Also an asymmetric flame around a particle is observed, which might be caused by an ejection of aluminum vapor from a crack of oxide shell surrounding the particle.  相似文献

Problem: Bamboo scaffolding has been widely used in South China, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia for many years. Bamboo scaffolding is more economical, but its safety record is relatively poor. Conversely, metal scaffolding is more expensive, but its use in these regions has increased in recent years because it is relatively safe. The assessment and selection of the most appropriate type of scaffolding for a particular construction project is always a concern for project managers. Method: This paper suggests a comprehensive assessment framework that enables project managers to take a number of major quantitative and qualitative factors into consideration when making scaffolding decisions. This framework is based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process methodology and a survey among project managers in Hong Kong. Results: The research reveals that the overall performance of metal scaffolding is believed to be better than bamboo scaffolding. A sensitivity analysis has also been conducted to investigate the impact of various factors on the final decisions. Impact on Industry: The proposed assessment framework can be used as a supporting tool for project managers in the selection of scaffolding for their projects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Radiant floor systems have the potential to reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint of buildings. This study analyzed a novel radiant panel configuration comprising a metal plate with small spikes that can be pressed into cement board or wood. The behavior of this configuration was simulated for different materials for the metal plate, spike dimensions, and varying spacing between spikes. An annual energy simulation model compared the radiant panel configuration with the traditional concrete-based system. Simulations were run under heating dominant, cooling dominant, and neutral conditions; significant cost savings and greenhouse gas emission reduction were seen across all scenarios.  相似文献

The causes for the failure in enforcement of environmental regulations at the Giap Lai pyrite mine in northern Vietnam are considered and the environmental impacts that are associated with this mine are evaluated. It is shown that sulphide-rich tailings and waste rock in the mining area represent significant sources of acid rock drainage (ARD). The ARD is causing elevated metal levels in downstream water bodies, which in turn, represent a threat to both human health and to aquatic ecosystems. Metal concentrations in impacted surface waters have increased after mine closure, suggesting that impacts are becoming progressively more serious. No post-closure, remediation measures have been applied at the mine, in spite of the existence of environmental legislation and both central and regional institutions charged with environmental supervision and control. The research presented here provides further emphasis for the recommendation that, while government institutions may need to be strengthened, and environmental regulations need to be in place, true on the ground improvement in environmental quality in Vietnam and in many other developing countries require an increased focus on promoting public awareness of industrial environmental issues.  相似文献

Multivariate statistics to investigate metal contamination in surface soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The modification of soil composition in the urbanized area of Ankara due to wet-dry deposition and pollution-derived particles from the atmosphere is investigated by analyzing 120 surface soil samples, collected from the urbanized area and its un-urbanized surrounding, for major, minor and trace elements. Concentrations of elements from human activity (e.g. Cd, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cu and Ca) in the urbanized area were higher than their corresponding concentrations in global average soil and soil in un-urbanized areas outside the urbanized area. Metal contents in soil were very high in densely populated districts and around some industrial facilities. The only exception was Pb distribution, which was more dispersed, due to the nature of motor vehicle emissions. Alteration of the Cd, Zn, Cu and Cr content of soil was confined to the inhabited and industrial areas, whereas enrichment factors of these elements were close to unity in the remaining study area. Factor analysis identified two polluted soil factor associations. One factor includes elements, such as Zn and Cd, which had high factor scores in inhabited areas and the other factor (high loading of Pb) represents soil polluted by motor vehicle emissions.  相似文献

This article presents the performance analysis of a single-stage metal hydride-based heat transformer (SS-MHHT) working with three different alloy pairs, namely LaNi4.6Al0.4/MmNi4.15Fe0.85, LaNi4.61Mn0.26Al0.13/La0.6Y0.4Ni4.8-Mn0.2, and Zr0.9Ti0.1Cr0.9Fe1.1/Zr0.9Ti0.1Cr0.6-Fe1.4. The performances of the SS-MHHT are predicted by solving the conjugate heat and mass (hydrogen) transfer equations in cylindrical coordinates. The effects of various parameters such as heat output (TH), heat input (TM), and heat sink (TL) temperatures on the coefficient of performance (COPHT), specific heating power (SHP) and second law efficiency (ηE) are presented. The effects of overall heat transfer coefficient and mass ratio on the coefficient of performance (COPHT) and specific heating power (SHP) are also presented. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data reported in the literature, and a good agreement is found between them. The maximum COPHT of 0.436 and SHP of 54 W/kg are obtained for LaNi4.61Mn0.26Al0.13/La0.6Y0.4Ni4.8-Mn0.2 pair. For a given operating temperatures of TM = 358 K and TL = 298 K, the maximum temperature lift of about 50 K is predicted for Zr0.9Ti0.1Cr0.9Fe1.1 /Zr0.9Ti0.1Cr0.6Fe1.4 pair.  相似文献

The health effects of trace metal elements in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are widely recognized, however, the emission factor profiles and chemical fractionation of metal elements in different sources were poorly understand. In this study, sixteen metal elements, including Cd, Pb, V, Zn, Ba, Sb, As, Fe, Sr, Cr, Rb, Co, Mn, Cu, Ni and Sn from biomass burning, bituminite and anthracite combustion, as well as dust, were quantified. The results show different emission sources were associated with distinct emission profiles, holding important implications for source apportionment of ambient particulate metals. Specifically, Fe was the dominant metal species (28-1922 mg/kg) for all samples, and was followed by different metals for different samples. For dust, Mn (39.9 mg/kgdust) had the second-highest emission factor, while for biomass burning, it was Cr and Ba (7.5 and 7.4 mg/kgbiomass, respectively). For bituminous coal combustion, the emission factor of Zn and Ba was 6.2 and 6.0 mg/kgbituminous, respectively, while for anthracite combustion the corresponding emission factor was 5.6 and 4.3 mg/kganthracite, respectively. Moreover, chemical fractionation (i.e., the exchangeable, reducible fraction, oxidizable, and residual fraction) and the bioavailability index (BI) values of the metal elements from different sources were further investigated to reveal the link between different emission sources and the potential health risk. The findings from this study hold important implications for source apportionment and source-specific particulate metal-associated health effects.  相似文献
