Summary. We tested the hypothesis that aggregation behaviour of the
firebrat, Thermobia domestica (Packard) (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), an
inhabitant of enclosed microhabitats, is mediated, at least in part, by
a pheromone. Individual insects were released into the central chamber
of a 3-chambered olfactometer and test stimuli were placed in lateral
chambers. Paper discs previously exposed for 3 days to 10 female, male,
or juvenile T. domestica were all preferred by female, male, or juvenile
T. domestica over unexposed paper discs, indicating the presence of an
aggregation/arrestment pheromone. In additional experiments, frass and
scales from female T. domestica, tested singly and in combination,
proved not to be the source of the pheromone. Physical contact was
required for pheromone recognition, indicating that the pheromone
arrests rather than attracts conspecifics. Arrestment by the
long-tailed silverfish, Ctenolepisma longicaudata Escherich
(Thysanura: Lepismatidae), but not by the common silverfish, Lepisma
saccharina L. (Thysanura: Lepismatidae), to T. domestica exposed
paper discs suggests closer phylogenetic relatedness between C.
longicaudata and T. domestica, than between C.
longicaudata and L. saccharina. Whether C.
longicaudata or L. saccharina produce an aggregation
signal, and whether T. domestica respond to this signal is unknown.

ABSTRACT: Increasing specialization separates animal production from cropland, complicating manure management. To assist policy targeting efforts, we highlight areas where on-farm use of manure may be problematic. Matching confined animal production with land, on the farm- rather than at the county-level, gives our analysis an advantage over previous studies in avoiding aggregation problems. With manure-based water quality problems, data aggregated to the county level may fail to convey the heterogeneity of animal production across regions and animal types. Aggregation bias blurs the distinction between areas with specialized animal production and those that merely have numerous animals. We estimate bias from using county aggregates, show its distribution spatially and by animal sector, and link it to concentration. Ongoing vertical integration in agriculture likely alters in-county variability in facility scale and scope, and may influence decisions about which data we should gather and use. 相似文献

Experimental evidence indicates that there is a significant departure of the wind profile above the underlying surface consisting of patches of solid and liquid parts, and plant communities with different morphological from that predicted by the logarithmic relationship, which gives the values larger than those observed. This situation can seriously affect the transfer of momentum, heat and water vapor from the surface fluxes into the atmosphere.The object of this paper is to generalize the calculation of the exchange of momentum between the atmosphere and a very heterogeneous surface, find a general equation for the wind speed profile in a roughness sublayer under neutral conditions, and, then, derive aggregated roughness length and displacement height over the grid cell. The suggested expression for the wind profile is compared with some earlier approaches, using a common parameterization of aerodynamic parameters over the grid cell, and the observations obtained at an experimental site in Philadelphia, PA. 相似文献

Developing a transparent,accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissionsinventory is the first step toward buildingan effective GHG management system. Todate, GHG inventories have been conductedprimarily at national levels. Theinternationally accepted inventorymethodology developed by theIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) is oriented to countrywideinventories. The electricity company RAOUESR is the largest single corporateemitter of GHG in the Russian Federation. The company is responsible for about 1/3 ofRussia's CO2 emissions; RAO's fossil fuelemissions are comparable to the fossil fuelemissions of the United Kingdom. The GHGinventory prepared by RAO is the first suchcorporate emissions inventory undertaken ina non-OECD country. In this article wepresent a detailed independent examinationof the methodology RAO applied for theinventory. We identify the most importantsources of uncertainty and we estimate theuncertainty. The main conclusion of theindependent review is that the methodologyutilized by RAO and the informationsupporting the methodology are reliable andpresent a reasonably accurate company-widepicture of RAO's CO2 emissions. The shareof other greenhouse gases is negligiblysmall and we did not focus on this fractionof RAO's GHG emissions. Climate is a group‐level phenomenon that should be measured and studied at the group level. The group level has theoretical and methodological advantages over the individual level. In this paper, I theoretically review the assumptions in measuring climate at the individual and group levels and demonstrate that the group‐level assumptions are more adequate for climate research because of their influences in exposure to events, interpretation of events, and preservation of perceptions. Methodologically, I discuss advantages in group‐level climate measurement accuracy that are based on multiple evaluators of climate and I suggest group aggregation is an organizational form of “wisdom of the crowds.” Finally, I point to three topics that remain to be investigated to understand climate at the group level better. The first is use of variability measures to compensate for information that is lost in aggregation. The second is challenging the assumption that formal organizational structure defines the group boundaries. I suggest that other levels of analysis apply to group‐level climate measurement and demonstrate the use of informal, more natural groups as an additional level. Third, I point to recently developed statistical procedures that can aid the study of climate perception emergence over time. 相似文献

Aggregations of individual animals that form for breeding purposes are a critical ecological process for many species, yet these aggregations are inherently vulnerable to exploitation. Studies of the decline of exploited populations that form breeding aggregations tend to focus on catch rate and thus often overlook reductions in geographic range. We tested the hypothesis that catch rate and site occupancy of exploited fish‐spawning aggregations (FSAs) decline in synchrony over time. We used the Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson) spawning‐aggregation fishery in the Great Barrier Reef as a case study. Data were compiled from historical newspaper archives, fisher knowledge, and contemporary fishery logbooks to reconstruct catch rates and exploitation trends from the inception of the fishery. Our fine‐scale analysis of catch and effort data spanned 103 years (1911–2013) and revealed a spatial expansion of fishing effort. Effort shifted offshore at a rate of 9.4 nm/decade, and 2.9 newly targeted FSAs were reported/decade. Spatial expansion of effort masked the sequential exploitation, commercial extinction, and loss of 70% of exploited FSAs. After standardizing for improvements in technological innovations, average catch rates declined by 90.5% from 1934 to 2011 (from 119.4 to 11.41 fish/vessel/trip). Mean catch rate of Spanish mackerel and occupancy of exploited mackerel FSAs were not significantly related. Our study revealed a special kind of shifting spatial baseline in which a contraction in exploited FSAs occurred undetected. Knowledge of temporally and spatially explicit information on FSAs can be relevant for the conservation and management of FSA species. 相似文献

Summary. The behavioural response of desert locust individuals to adult male volatiles had been investigated in a dynamic Y-T-olfactometer. Synthetic blends of a postulated adult male-produced aggregation pheromone with or without phenylacetonitrile were not attractive to fifth-instar nymphs, young or mature adults of both sexes. Instead phenylacetonitrile had a repellent effect, which was strongest in sexually mature males. The repellent effect of phenylacetonitrile was not modified by the other components of the adult male pheromone bouquet. Even at low concentrations tested the source of the pheromone was avoided. These results are in agreement with recent studies showing that this male specific pheromone is employed by mature gregarious males in sexual behaviour and acts as a courtship inhibiting pheromone. Low concentrations of phenylacetonitrile or the postulated adult male aggregation pheromone blend without phenylacetonitrile may signal the presence of swarm fellows and eventually initiate visually guided congregation behaviour in gregarious locusts. Whether this effect does significantly contribute to swarm cohesion needs further studies. 相似文献

Threat-sensitive decision-making might be changed in response to a parasitic infection that impairs future reproduction. Infected
animals should take more risk to gain energy to speed up their growth to achieve early reproduction and/or to strengthen their
immune response. To avoid correlational evidence, we experimentally infected and sham-infected randomly selected immature
three-spined sticklebacks with the cestode Schistocephalus solidus. For 7 weeks we determined the threat-sensitive foraging decisions and growth of individual sticklebacks in the presence
of a live pike (Esox lucius). The experimenters were blind with respect to the infection status of the fish. In contrast to previous studies, our recently
infected fish should have been almost unconstrained by the parasite and thus have been able to adopt an appropriate life history
strategy. We found a strong predator effect for both infected and uninfected fish: the sticklebacks’ risk-sensitive foraging
strategy resulted in significantly reduced growth under predation risk. Infected fish did not grow significantly faster under
predation risk than uninfected fish. Since infected fish consumed much less prey in the presence of the predator than did
infected fish in its absence, they obviously did not use the opportunity to maximize their growth rate to reach reproduction
before the parasite impairs it.

Summary. Under field conditions significantly more black
chafer, Holotrichia loochooana loochooana (Sawada)
(Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) males landed on black and gray
sources than white ones containing 10 mg of female
pheromone, anthranilic acid. When a broader spectrum of
colours was tested the frequency of male landing was intensively
proportional to as the lightness of the colour of the
lures. These findings demonstrated that mate location by
H. l. loochooana males is dependent on
both olfactory and visual stimuli of the source. In contrast, female aggregation was not
