This study is aimed at investigating the impact of water quality on the uptake and distribution of three non-essential and toxic elements, namely, As, Cd and Pb in the watercress plant to assess for metal toxicity. The plant was hydroponically cultivated under greenhouse conditions, with the growth medium being spiked with varying concentrations of As, Cd and Pb. Plants that were harvested weekly for elemental analysis showed physiological and morphological symptoms of toxicity on exposure to high concentrations of Cd and Pb. Plants exposed to high concentrations of As did not survive and the threshold for As uptake in watercress was established at 5 ppm. Translocation factors were low in all cases as the toxic elements accumulated more in the roots of the plant than the edible leaves. The impact of Zn on the uptake of toxic elements was also evaluated and Zn was found to have an antagonistic effect on uptake of both Cd and Pb with no notable effect on uptake of As. The findings indicate that phytotoxicity or death of the watercress plant would prevent it from being a route of human exposure to high concentrations of As, Cd and Pb in the environment.  相似文献

Evaluation of aqueous uranium (U) uptake and depuration in larvae of the midge Chironomus tentans were investigated in two separated experiments. First, a static-renewal experiment was performed with 10-d old C. tentans larvae exposed to 300 μg U/L. The animals steadily accumulated U (Ku = 20.3) approaching steady-state conditions (BAF = 56) in approximately 9-11 d. However, accumulated U was readily depurated (Kd = 0.36) with U tissue concentration decreasing rapidly within 3 d of the larvae being placed in clean water (t1/2 = 1.9 d). Also, the growth of C. tentans larvae appeared to decrease after 6-11 d of U exposure, probably due to the reallocation of resources into U detoxification mechanisms. However, growth significantly increased once C. tentans were transferred to clean water. A separate short-term experiment was performed to evaluate the possible mechanism of U uptake in this invertebrate. Results suggested a passive mechanism of U uptake coupled with an active mechanism of U depuration but no details related to the type of mechanisms or pathway was investigated.  相似文献

通过人工投加铜离子对驯化污泥的破坏性实验,研究了各浓度铜离子对活性污泥氨氮、COD降解的影响及其TTC-脱氢酶活性、氧摄取速率(SOUR)、氨摄取速率(AUR)的影响。结果显示,0~5 mg/L的铜离子对处理系统有机物的去除率影响不大。铜离子浓度与活性污泥的TTC-脱氢酶活性、SOUR以及AUR之间呈现良好的相关性;低浓度的铜离子对TTC-脱氢酶活性和SOUR均有一定的促进作用,而对AUR则会产生一定的抑制作用。当铜离子浓度达到5 mg/L时,其对SOUR、TTC-脱氢酶活性以及AUR的抑制率均超过50%。在此情况下,采用TTC-脱氢酶活性、SOUR以及AUR等指标,能快速有效地表征铜离子对活性污泥微生物的毒害作用。  相似文献

Harm of thorium to living organisms is governed by its bioavailability. Thorium bioavailability in the soil-plant system of Baotou rare earth industrial area was studied using pot experiments of wheat and single extraction methods. The effects of wheat growth stage and phosphate on thorium bioavailability were also investigated. Based on extractabilities of various extraction methods (CaCl2, NH4NO3, EDTA, HOAc) and correlation analysis of thorium uptake by wheat plant and extractable thorium, a mixture of 0.02 M EDTA + 0.5 M NH4OAc (pH 4.6) was found suitable for evaluation of thorium bioavailability in Baotou soil, which could be predicted quantitatively by multiple regression models. Because of differences of wheat root activities, thorium bioavailability in rhizosphere soil was higher than in bulk soil at tillering stage, but the reverse occurred at jointing stage. Phosphate addition induced the mineralization of soluble thorium by forming stable thorium phosphate compounds, and reduced thorium bioavailability in soil.  相似文献

It was shown that along the Eastern Ural Radioactive Trace central axis, about 100 km in length, decrease of the 90Sr and 137Cs deposition densities in soil samples may be described as an exponential function. At the western and eastern periphery of the trace, 90Sr contents in soils approached to the background level due to global fallout. 90Sr and 137Cs concentrations in seeds of some herbaceous plants have been determined. The radionuclide concentrations and the resulting dose loads upon plant seeds showed an excess over the background level of about two or three orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Fullerene is one of the nanocarbons that is expected to have applications to life science, such as nanomedicines. An understanding of the cellular influences of fullerene is essential for its application to life science. Although C60 and C70 are both known as major fullerenes, most previous reports about the cellular influences of fullerene are about C60. Thus we evaluated the cellular influences caused by C70. A stable and uniform C70-medium dispersion was prepared. The dispersion was stable for the experimental period. Mitochondrial activity (MTT assay), colony forming ability (clonogenic assay), induction of oxidative stress (intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation levels) and cellular uptake (TEM observation) in human keratinocyte HaCaT and lung carcinoma A549 cells exposed to C70 were examined. C70 did not influence mitochondrial activity. On the other hand, C70 dispersion inhibited colony formation at the concentration of 25.2 μg mL−1. Exposure to C70 dispersion caused an increase in intracellular ROS and lipid peroxidation levels. The induction of intracellular ROS level was inhibited by pre-treatment of the cells by antioxidants. TEM observations of C70 exposed cells showed cellular uptake of C70. These results were similar to the cellular influences caused by C60 which were reported by us previously. Although C70 did not cause cell death, it caused the induction of intracellular oxidative stress.  相似文献

In this work, a statistical experimental design is performed in order to prepare CaCO3 materials for use as CaO-based CO2 sorbent precursors. The influence of different operational parameters such as synthesis temperature (ST), stirring rate (SR) and surfactant percent (SP) on CO2 capture is studied by applying Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The samples were characterized using different analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption isotherm analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy–X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). CO2 capture capacity was determined by means of a thermogravimetric analyzer which recorded the mass uptake of the samples when these were exposed to a gas stream containing diluted (15%) CO2. The statistical approach used in this work provides a rapid way of predicting and optimizing the main preparation variables of CaO-derived sorbents for CO2 sorption. The results obtained clearly indicate that four parameters statistically influence CO2 uptake: SR, the square of SR, its interaction with SP and the square of SP.  相似文献

Abstract

Wheat is more sensitivity to CdO and ZnO compared with rice plant. The yield of wheat decreased by 30% in the presence of 30 ppm Cd, but that of rice plants by only 8%. The critical levels of meal uptake by wheat and rice plants for applying metal oxides to soil (CdO, ZnO, PbO) were determined. The highest concentration obtained for wheat grain was 141 μg/g Cd at the Cd 10,000 ppm in soil. This value is higher the value of 4.97 μg/g for unpolished rice and higher than any other we have seen in the reports for treatment with CdO. Also, as concentration of more than 1.0 μg/g Cd in wheat was obsertced at 5 ppm Cd, while similar concentrations for rice plants were observed at 30 ppm Cd in soil.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects of wastewater from olive processing on seed germination and early plant growth of different vegetable species were examined. Three types of wastewater at different concentrations were tested: raw wastewater, wastewater with organic matter removed and deionized wastewater.

Results generally indicate an inhibitory effect on seed germination and early plant growth by all treatments containing any kind of wastewater. Of the three types of effluent, raw wastewater had the greatest depressive effect, followed by deionized wastewater and finally effluent with organic matter removed. Barley showed the least sensitivity to phytotoxic effects while tomato was the plant most affected. The remaining vegetable species showed an intermediate sensitivity.  相似文献
