The present study assesses the feasibility of exploiting single- and double-basin solar stills in our daily lives. An investigation is carried out to determine the thermal performance and economic viability of making use of solar stills in water desalination. The climatic conditions of Tehran (35°44?N, 51°30?E) are considered to assess the feasibility of the basins. Transient energy and mass balance equations are utilized for modeling the thermal performance. The equations are solved by using fourth-order Runge–Kutta method in FORTRAN. The daily productivities of single- and double-basin solar stills are found to be 5.22 kg/m2 and 7.73 kg/m2, respectively, while the effect of different water masses (20–100 kg) on the productivity of each system was found to be optimum at 20 kg/m2. The results are compared with experimental work performed under different climatic conditions to examine the validity of the feasibility of basins in general. A life cycle cost analysis performed for Tehran, yields that single- and double-basin solar stills have savings-to-investment ratios of 4.2 and 4.8, respectively, indicating that they are economically feasible. 相似文献

Nutrient limitation of phytoplankton growth in nature is a complex phenomenon. the timing of nutrient limitation is a product of matching of algal growth with abiotic and/or biotic events regenerating nutrients, and mismatching with predator activity. the extent of production is governed by the concentration of atomic constituents which, in turn, is a function of the rapidity and quantity of nutrient regeneration by heterotrophs. Excess phytoplankton production over heterotroph demand is lost from the euphotic zone by sinking and from the ecosphere by sedimentation. Phytoplankton growth is therefore always limited by the size and activity of the regenerative food web, either directly through predation, or indirectly by inadequate nutrient regeneration. the open water column is a habitat deplete environment for metazoa, incapable of supporting simultaneous high predator and prey densities. Because of the incompatibility of the temporal and spatial scales of microbial and metazoan processes, and the presence of micro-habitats which can support a full recycling food web on microbial scales, the microbial loop is an important component of euphotic zone ecology. the total marine ecosystem runs at a nutrient sufficient level with nutrient deplete and replete phases dependent on matching of production with predation throughout the food web and subject to abiotic events. Man's release of N and P into coastal waters, if coupled with an increased incidence of mismatch resulting from climatic variation induced by the “greenhouse effect”, could have catastrophic effects on marine ecosystems. 相似文献

Excessive soil losses due to erosion or lateral displacement by machinery impair productivity. Some soil loss is tolerable, but not so much that plant productivity diminishes. Thus productivity is the dominant concern in determining soil-loss tolerance. The effects of soil loss on productivity, however, are difficult to determine. Therefore, two alternatives are discussed for determining the limits of soil loss, or soil-loss tolerance. These alternatives are the maintenance of soil organic matter and, for shallow and moderately deep soils, the maintenance of soil depth. They are not new strategies, but our rapidly increasing knowledge of the dynamics of soil organic matter and the rates of soil formation from bedrock or consolidated sediments warrants the reconsideration of these alternatives. Reductions in either soil organic matter or the depth of shallow or moderately deep soils will lead to declining productivity. Soil organic matter, considered to be a surrogate for productivity, is much easier to monitor than is productivity. Also, there are many computer models for predicting the effects of management on soil organic matter. Recently compiled data on rates of soil formation suggest that soil losses of 1 t/a (2.24 Mg/ha yr) are greater than the rate of replenishment by the weathering of lithic or paralithic material in all but very wet climates. 相似文献

A number of recent reports have documented offspring sex ratio biases in birds. However, to date the potential mechanisms that have been put forward to explain the proximate basis for these deviations are entirely speculative. Using a captive population of domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica), I tested the hypothesis that mothers in relatively poor physical condition should overproduce daughters by manipulating maternal body condition around the time of egg laying by continuous egg removal and differing feeding regimes. During treatment, females were fed a controlled quantity of food. This, combined with the high energetic costs of repeated egg production caused a significant reduction in maternal body weight. In contrast, during control when food was available ad libitum, maternal body weight did not decline, despite repeated egg production. No significant deviation from parity was evident in the sex ratio of either the first or second eggs during control, whereas during treatment a significant female bias was evident in not only the first egg, but also in the second egg. The absence of single-egg clutches, the rarity of infertile eggs and the lack of laying delays between eggs strongly suggests that the mechanism of sex ratio adjustment in pigeons occurs prior to ovulation. The highly skewed sex-distribution within the two-egg clutches and the unexpectedly large amount of variation in the yolk weight of eggs produced during treatment (but not control) are consistent with the expectations of pre-ovulatory selective resorption of wrong sex ovarian follicles. 相似文献

Since 1950, the real value of fish catches in Norway has about doubled, while the number of fishermen has declined by about 85 percent. This has made it possible to maintain fishermen's incomes roughly on par with other occupational groups in Norway. It is investigated to what extent this increase in labor productivity is due to accumulation of capital, increasingly abundant fish stocks, or technological progress. Since the capital stock in recent years is not much greater in real terms than in the early 1960s, it is tempting to ascribe most of the increase in labor productivity to technical progress. This, however, would leave out the role of fish stocks; if stocks have increased over this period, this would explain some of what otherwise appears as a technical progress. Using data on labor, capital, fish catches, and fish stock abundance 1961–2004 the development of total factor productivity is examined. Ignoring changes in fish stocks, total factor productivity is estimated to have increased by 0.8 percent per year. Accounting for changes in fish stocks raises this to 1.7–4.3 percent per year, depending on the importance assigned to stocks as factors of production. 相似文献

The benefit of group living is a fundamental question in social evolution. For sociality to evolve, each individual must gain
in terms of some fitness component by living in larger groups. However, in social insects, a decrease in per capita success in brood production has been observed in larger groups. While it has been proposed that this decrease could be outweighed
by an increase in the predictability of success, a functional basis to this hypothesis has so far never been demonstrated.
In this paper, using foraging economics as a functional proxy to colony productivity, we construct a model to explore how
number of foragers in the colony interacts with the ecology of resources to influence per capita foraging success and its
predictability. The results of the model show that there is no increase in per capita foraging success in larger colonies
under most circumstances, though there is an increase in its predictability. We then test the model with empirical data on
the foraging behavior of the primitively eusocial wasp, Ropalidia marginata. The consistency between the data and the model suggests that foraging economics could provide a robust functional basis

We applied the simulation model ROMUL of soil organic matter dynamics in order to analyse and predict forest soil organic matter (SOM) changes following stand growth and also to identify gaps of data and modelling problems. SOM build-up was analysed (a) from bare sand to forest soil during a primary succession in Scots pine forest and (b) on mature forest soil under Douglas fir plantations as an example of secondary succession in The Netherlands. As some of the experimental data were unreliable we compiled a set of various scenarios with different soil moisture regime, initial SOM pools and amount and quality of above and below ground litter input. This allowed us to find the scenarios that reflect the SOM dynamics more realistically. In the Scots pine forest, total litter input was estimated as 0.50 kg m−2 year−1. Two scenarios were defined for the test runs: (a) forest floor moisture regimes—‘dry, mesic and hydric’ and (b) augmenting a root litter pool with three ratios of needles and branches to roots: 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2.0. The scenario finally compiled had the following characteristics: (a) climate for dry site with summer drought and high winter moisture of forest floor; (b) a litter input of 0.25 kg m−2 year−1 above ground and 0.50 kg m−2 year−1 below ground; (c) a low nitrogen and ash content in all litter fall fractions. The test runs for the estimation of the initial SOM pools and the amount and proportion of above and below ground litter fall were also performed in the Douglas fir plantation. The inputs of above ground litter tested in various combinations were 0.30 and 0.60 kg m−2 year−1, and below ground litter 0.30, 0.60 and 0.90 kg m−2 year−1. The scenario that fitted the experimental data had an SOM pool of 20–25 kg m−2, an aboveground litter input of 0.6 kg m−2 year−1and a below ground litter input of 0.9 kg m−2 year−1. The long-term simulation corresponded well with the observed patterns of soil organic matter accumulation associated with the forest soil development in primary and secondary succession. During primary succession in Scots pine forest on dry sand there is a consistent accumulation of a raw humus forest floor. The soil dynamics in the Douglas fir plantation also coincide with the observed patterns of SOM changes during the secondary succession, with SOM decreasing significantly under young forest, and SOM being restored in the older stands. 相似文献

Summary. An important question in insect-plant interactions is which of the numerous plant compounds contribute to the perception of
odour qualities in herbivorous insects and are likely to be used as cues in host-searching behaviour. In order to identify
which plant-produced volatiles the strawberry blossom weevil Anthonomus rubi detects, we have used electrophysiological recordings from single olfactory neurones linked to gas chromatography and mass
spectrometry. We here present 15 receptor neurone types specialised for naturally produced compounds present in the host and
nonhost plants and two types for two aggregation pheromone components. The active compounds were terpenoids, aromatic and
aliphatic esters, alcohols and aldehydes, some of which are induced by feeding activity of the weevils. The neurones were
characterised by a strong response to one or two primary odorants and weaker responses to a few others having similar chemical
structure. With one exception, the molecular receptive range of each neurone type was within one chemical group. Enantiomers
of linalool separated on a chiral column activated two neurone types with different enantioselectivity. Inhibition by linalool
of another neurone type, excited by α-pinene, indicated an additional mechanism for coding the information about this compound.
Altogether, detection of 54 compounds by olfactory receptor neurones is shown, of which 40 have been chemically identified
in this study. Thus A. rubi has the ability to detect a large number of odorants that may be used in host selection behaviour. 相似文献

We assessed the potential impact of a proposed canal development in an estuarine sandflat at Ralphs Bay, Tasmania on intertidal
microalgal productivity and species composition, by comparing it over summer and winter seasons with a well- established (30 year
old) canal estate at Patterson Lakes, Victoria. Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) fluorometry was used to generate a relative
measure of photosynthetic performance, which combined with microalgal chlorophyll biomass and irradiance provides an assessment
of potential primary productivity. We present a sophisticated mathematical model for calculating benthic microalgal production
and the contribution to total primary production, taking into account sediment light attenuation as estimated from sediment
grain size. Ralphs Bay had a total productive microalgal biomass of 44 mg chlorophyll a m−2 which was six times higher than Patterson Lakes, while the relative productivity of Ralphs Bay was four times greater compared
to Patterson Lakes where productivity was virtually absent in the subtidal zone of the canal waterway. Ralphs Bay exhibited
a more or less homogeneous spatial distribution of microphytobenthos biomass but this was subject to some seasonal variation
in species composition, abundance and productivity. By contrast, at Patterson Lakes biomass distribution, diversity and productivity
was highly spatially variable in the canal system in both seasons. Patterson Lakes exhibited 60% lower microphytobenthos species
richness than Ralphs Bay but little variation in species composition occurred between seasons in the canal estate. This suggests
that the dominant diatom species in Patterson Lakes, Pinnularia yarrensis, Gyrosigma balticum and Pleurosigma salinarum, are well adapted to the disturbance regime within the canal estate. The proposed canal development at Ralphs Bay is estimated
to cause a decrease in microalgal productivity by both reducing available marine substrate (66% reduction) and replacing productive
intertidal phytobenthic habitat with nonproductive canal substrate. These combine to cause a decline in productivity of 92%
with significant flow-on effects predicted for higher trophic levels such as migratory wading birds. 相似文献

利用2014年铜川市空气质量指数(AQI)、常规气象资料和NECP/NCAR再分析资料,分析2014年铜川市AQI与首要污染物的时间分布,并探讨典型重污染时段的气象条件。结果表明:夏季AQI小于全年均值,首要污染物以臭氧为主,秋冬AQI较高,首要污染物以PM为主。2月的环流条件不利于污染物的扩散,500 hpa位势高度与AQI的变2.5化存在一定相关性,高空条件是2月持续污染的一个重要原因。春节和元宵节期间AQI均达到重度污染等级,对此间出现的连续性空气重度污染的气象条件分析得出,在高空稳定的平直纬向西风,配合地面的弱低压这一天气形势下,相对稳定的大气层结和持续较强逆温使得污染物难以扩散进而堆积,是持续数日重度污染的重要原因。 相似文献
