ABSTRACT: A study was conducted in the Piedmont province of Maryland to determine if a relationship exists between stream quality and the extent of watershed urbanization. During the first phase of the study 27 small watersheds, having similar characteristics but varied according to land use, were investigated. Using these controlled conditions, eliminating as many interferences as possible, this first phase was intended to determine if a definite relationship did exist between the two factors. Finding that the first phase was successful the second was initiated which consisted of a comparison of biological sampling data, from other studies, with degree of watershed urbanization. The purpose of this second phase was to ascertain if the relationship between degrees of urbanization and decline in stream quality was linear as watershed area increased and in streams spread throughout the Maryland Piedmont. The principal finding of this study was that stream quality impairment is first evidenced when watershed imperviousness reaches 12%, but does not become severe until imperviousness reaches 30%.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Increasingly, residential development in urbanizing areas is accomplished by large housing projects, composed of clusters of townhouses or garden partments. It is hypothesized that the runoff from such developments should carry more pollution than that from the same number of housing units on separate plots, because the runoff is conveyed directly to drainage channels rather than being drained across lawns and gardens, which may absorb part of the pollutants. In order to evaluate this effect, storm event data were obtained from a planned unit development near Hightstown, N. J., using samples taken every 10 minutes throughout the storm at two different storm sewers. Results show heavy metals pollution about what had been anticipated, in accordance with the hypothesis given above, and BOD ammonia and phosphates higher than predicted. The results are significant for areawide water quality planning in metropolitan areas, where projections of future pollution loadings depends upon the land use.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A few years ago, many water quality administrators were convinced that large regional sewerage systems, consisting of one large treatment plant and long trunk sewers extending out to various communities, represented the only efficient and economical means of assuring water quality control. In communities favoring rapid development, the provision of sewer service and encouragement of development of new centers along the trunk sewers offered an additional advantage. More recently quite different points of view are arising in certain areas. In parts of New Jersey strong environmental and community resistance has arisen to proposed central plant-trunk sewer systems. The facilitation of new development along the trunk sewers is viewed as a menace by townships not wanting intensive development of these areas. The diversion of effluent flows to trunk sewers rather than septic tanks would dry up the streams which water quality programs are supposed to protect. Both sides to the controversy have mobilized engineering, environmental, economic, and legal expertise and some critical policy issues have developed. Reconsideration of regional sewerage management and particularly trunk sewer policy is required. The decision as to extent of sewerage service areas involves complex and sensitive planning issues. Because of potential conflicts of interest, such decisions should not be left to staffs of sewerage authorities and their design engineers.  相似文献

人类活动使得大量的重金属向水环境中排放,导致了城市湖泊严重的重金属污染.为了研究中国的工业化、城市化发展对城市水体重金属污染的影响,以武汉墨水湖为例,测定了沉积物中几种常见痕量重金属Zn、Pb、Ni、Cu、Cr的含量和富集系数,并运用主成分分析对重金属的污染来源进行了初步探讨.结果表明,墨水湖表层沉积物重金属污染程度较重,主要受人为输入的影响;5种重金属在全湖区域上具有比较高的富集系数,尤以排污口为甚,排污口是重金属富集的主要区域.主成分分析表明,Pb可能主要来自于暴雨径流面源,而Cr可能主要来自于工矿企业的点源排放,其他3种金属则有着大小相当的点、面源输入贡献。以上结果表明,城市化和工业化进程已经给城市湖泊带来了很高的重金属污染负荷.  相似文献

Water demands in arid and semi-arid areas, coupled with increased human populations and concomitant changes in land use, can greatly alter aquatic ecosystems. A good example of this type of system occurs along the eastern slope of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, U.S.A. Long-term macroinvertebrate metric data from the Big Thompson and Cache la Poudre Rivers, Colorado, were collected at one site above, and three sites in and downstream from urban areas. These data were compared both with regional reference and single reference sites in the respective rivers. Using the surrogate variables of potential urban impact (population and housing units), and the environmental gradient represented primarily by chemical factors, it was determined that there was an effect of urban land use that was reflected in the macroinvertebrate assemblages in both rivers. The most robust results were usually seen when regional reference data were used. However, even using only the upstream reference site in either river indicated some negative impacts from the urban areas. The long-term data, particularly in the Cache la Poudre River, showed that water quality has not been getting worse and there is some evidence of a slight improvement in downstream reaches, even with increased urban development.  相似文献

本文针对上海2017年夏季的一次臭氧污染过程,利用WRF-Chem模式模拟了海风环流在臭氧输送、聚集和消散过程中所起的作用.结果表明,白天的海风在沿海区域对500 m高度以下的近地面大气起到清洁作用,但海风环流上支离岸气流也会将海风辐合带的高浓度臭氧输送回到近海的边界层中上部,同时,海风环流和热岛环流的加强效应有助于臭氧前体物(VOC和NO2)在辐合带和近海边界层中上部的聚集,从而加快生成臭氧的光化学反应,进一步地加剧臭氧高值区的臭氧污染.在此基础上设计的敏感性实验分析了城市化和海温的贡献.结果发现,城市化会加重上海地区边界层上部的臭氧污染,白天城市热岛环流对海风环流存在正向叠加作用,增强近地面的向岸风;而海温升高会削弱海风,对臭氧的分布产生很大的影响,进一步证明海风环流在臭氧分布的变化中起到了重要的作用.  相似文献

城市化导致城市面积扩张和土地利用方式改变,从而影响了土壤重金属空间分布.本文以成都-温江这一典型"中心城-郊区-卫星城"梯度带为研究区,探讨绿地表层土壤重金属Cu、Pb和Zn的空间分布特征及其影响因素,以期为城市土壤重金属污染治理提供帮助.结果表明,研究区内土壤Cu、Pb和Zn含量均值分别为47.77、39.98和89.65 mg·kg~(-1),其中土壤Cu和Pb含量均值超过土壤背景值.3种重金属含量在"中心城-郊区-卫星城"梯度带呈现先降低后增加的趋势.方差分析表明,区内不同绿地类型土壤Cu和Zn含量差异显著(p0.05),Pb含量在各个绿地类型下无显著性差异(p0.05);回归分析显示3种重金属含量随距城市中心距离增加而极显著降低(p0.01);缓冲区分析表明,土壤Cu、Pb和Zn含量受局部范围内的建筑密度和道路密度影响,且随局部范围内建筑密度和道路密度的增加而显著增加(p0.05).逐步回归分析显示,土壤Cu含量主要受建筑密度影响,Pb含量主要受道路密度和绿地类型影响,Zn含量则受绿地类型、道路密度和建筑密度的共同影响.研究结果显示城市化造成土壤重金属在一定程度上累积,距城市中心距离、绿地类型、建筑密度和道路密度均会影响土壤重金属的空间分布.  相似文献

论文聚焦城市化进程中的土地自然资本利用演变,从生产性视角定义了土地足迹和土地承载力的核算方法,在此基础上运用一个区分自然资本流量与存量、可以进行“产品—地类—区域”尺度转换的三维足迹模型,对2000—2014年贵阳市的土地自然资本利用状况进行了系统分析。结果表明:过去15 a贵阳市的土地自然资本流动性提高了39.4%,存量消耗强度降低了15.7%。耕地自然资本的流量占用规模和存量消耗强度均为最大,农业生产结构逐渐由粮食主导型向蔬果主导型转变;林地取代草地成为自然资本利用第二大地类,其生态盈余是区域自然资本流量增加的主要来源;草地自然资本的存量-流量利用比虽有大幅回落,但仍存在较大的反弹风险;建设地对自然资本流量的占用规模超越草地仅次于林地,并与城市化率在1%的水平上显著正相关;水域的自然资本利用占比最小,且由以存量消耗为主过渡到以流量占用为主。论文从区域和地类两个层面揭示了城乡土地利用变化与自然资本流量占用和存量消耗之间的关系,为提升足迹核算与分析方法的科学性和标准化提供了参考依据。  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The Hydrologic Simulation Program‐Fortran (HSPF) was calibrated and used to assess the future effects of various land development scenarios on water quality in the Polecat Creek watershed in Caroline County, Virginia. Model parameters related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated and validated using observed stream flow and water quality data collected at the watershed outlet and the outlets of two sub water sheds. Using the county's Comprehensive Plan, land use scenarios were developed by taking into account the trends and spatial distributions of future development. The simulation results for the various land use scenarios indicate that runoff volume and peak rate increased as urban areas increased. Urbanization also increased sediment loads mainly due to increases in channel erosion. Constituent loads of total Kjeldal nitrogen, orthophosphorus, and total phosphorous for Polecat Creek watershed slightly decreased under future development scenarios. These reductions are due to increases in urban areas that typically contribute smaller quantities of nitrogen and phosphorous, as compared to agricultural areas. However, nitrate loads increased for the future land use scenarios, as compared to the existing land use. The increases in nitrate loads may result from increases in residential land and associated fertilizer use and concurrent decreases in forested land. The procedures used in this paper could assist local, state, and regional policy makers in developing land management strategies that minimize environmental impacts while allowing for future development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: We analyzed data from riffle and snag habitats for 39 small cold water streams with different levels of watershed urbanization in Wisconsin and Minnesota to evaluate the influences of urban land use and instream habitat on macroinvertebrate communities. Multivariate analysis indicated that stream temperature and amount of urban land use in the watersheds were the most influential factors determining macroinvertebrate assemblages. The amount of watershed urbanization was nonlinearly and negatively correlated with percentages of Ephemeroptera‐Plecoptera‐Trichoptera (EPT) abundance, EPT taxa, filterers, and scrapers and positively correlated with Hilsenhoff biotic index. High quality macroinvertebrate index values were possible if effective imperviousness was less than 7 percent of the watershed area. Beyond this level of imperviousness, index values tended to be consistently poor. Land uses in the riparian area were equal or more influential relative to land use elsewhere in the watershed, although riparian area consisted of only a small portion of the entire watershed area. Our study implies that it is extremely important to restrict watershed impervious land use and protect stream riparian areas for reducing human degradation on stream quality in low level urbanizing watersheds. Stream temperature may be one of the major factors through which human activities degrade cold‐water streams, and management efforts that can maintain a natural thermal regime will help preserve stream quality.  相似文献
