In social-insect colonies, cooperation among nestmates is generally stabilized by their high genetic similarity. Thus, fitness gained through cooperation drops quickly as the number of reproductive females (queens) increases. In this respect, wasps of the tribe Epiponini have attracted special attention, because the colonies have tens, or even hundreds of queens. It has been empirically or genetically confirmed that relatedness within nestmates can be elevated by a mechanism known as cyclical monogyny, under which new queens are produced only after the number of old queens is reduced to one. Another likely factor that can increase relatedness within nestmates under polygyny is comb partitioning by queens. If queens concentrate their egg laying on one or a subset of the available combs, then workers may be able to rear closer relatives by focusing their work on the comb where they emerged. Using microsatellite markers, we tested the hypotheses of cyclical monogyny and comb partitioning by queens increasing relatedness within nestmates under polygyny in the large-colony epiponine wasp, Polybia paulista. There were no significant differences between relatedness within combs and between combs, and thus we ruled out the possibility that each queen partitions reproduction between combs. However, as cyclical monogyny predicts, a lower effective number of queens contributed to queen production than to worker production. Cyclical monogyny explained well the observed smaller effective number of queens for new queens than that for workers, but failed to explain the stable relatedness values throughout colony cycles.Communicated by L. Closed capture-recapture (CR) estimators have been used extensively to estimate population size. Most closed CR approaches have been developed and evaluated for discrete-time models, but there has been little effort to evaluate their continuous-time counterparts. Continuous-time estimators — developed using maximum likelihood theory by Craig (1953) and Darroch (1958), and martingale theory by Becker (1984) — that allow capture probabilities to vary over time were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Overall, the ML estimators had a smaller MSE. The estimators performed well when model assumptions were upheld, and were somewhat robust to heterogeneity in capture probabilities. However, the estimators were not robust to behavioural effects in the capture probabilities. Time lag effects (periods when animals might be unavailable for immediate recapture) on continuous-time estimates were also investigated and results indicated a positive bias which was greater for smaller populations. There was no gain in performance when using a continuous-time estimator versus a discrete-time estimator on the same simulated data. Usefulness of the continuous-time approach may be limited to study designs where animals are easier to sample using continuous-time methodology. 相似文献

Fisher's theory of sex allocation predicts that, in a panmictic population, parental investment will be equally distributed between male and female progeny. Most studies on parental investment in nesting solitary bees and wasps use offspring or provision weight as estimators of parental investment and do not corroborate Fisher's theory. The measurement of parental investment may be confounded by several factors. First, the use of offspring or provision size does not account for seasonal variation in foraging costs associated with aging of nesting females. Second, provision or offspring size do not reflect parental investment associated with nest construction. In this two-year study we measured parental investment in a solitary bee. We calculated sex allocation using both provision weight and foraging time as parental investment estimators. Investment in pollen-nectar provisions decreased, while investment in mud structures (nest construction) increased, as the nesting period progressed. Overall investment in provisions per nest was ∼25 times higher than investment in mud. Pollen-nectar foraging trips became longer as the season progressed, but mud trip duration did not vary. Due to weather differences between years, more offspring per female were produced in the first year, but progeny sex ratio and mean offspring size of both sexes were similar between years. Mortality did not differ between sexes. As predicted by Fisher's theory, production cost ratios did not differ from 1 in either year, irrespective of the currency used to estimate parental investment (provision weight or foraging time). Our results strongly support Fisher's theory. 相似文献

Many ant species adjust the volume of their underground nest to the colony size. We studied whether the regulation of the volume of excavated sand could result from an interplay between recruitment processes and ant density. Experiments were performed with different group sizes of workers in the ant Messor sancta. When presented with a thin homogeneous sand disk, these groups excavated networks of galleries in less than 3 days. The excavation dynamics were logistic shaped, which suggests the existence of a double feedback system: a positive one resulting in an initial exponential growth phase, and a negative one leading the dynamics to a saturation phase. The total volume of excavated sand was almost proportional to the number of workers. We then developed a model in which we incorporated the quantitative behavioral rules of the workers digging activity. A positive feedback was introduced in the form of a recruitment process mediated by pheromones. The model predicts that the excavation dynamics should be logistic shaped and the excavation should almost stop despite the absence of any explicit negative feedback. Moreover, the model was able to reproduce the positive linear relationship between nest volume and colony size.Communicated by K. Ross 相似文献

Lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni) lay clutches which appear excessive as only 3% of them yield as many young as eggs laid. Four hypotheses may explain the
adaptive value of producing surplus eggs: (1) the bet-hedging hypothesis assumes that the environment varies unpredictably
and surplus eggs serve to track uncertain resources; (2) the ice-box hypothesis suggests that surplus offspring serve as a
reserve food during a period of shortage; (3) the progeny choice hypothesis says that parents produce surplus offspring in
order to choose these with higher fitness; and (4) the insurance-egg hypothesis proposes that extra eggs are an insurance
against the failure of any egg. To test the significance of this strategy in the lesser kestrel, an experiment manipu-lating
brood size at hatching was carried out over 2 years, with good and bad feeding conditions. The experiment consisted of adding
a chick to experimental broods where one egg failed to hatch or removing a randomly selected chick from experimental broods
where all eggs had hatched. Independently of annual food availability, pairs with brood sizes reduced by one chick fledged
more nestlings than pairs with brood size equalling their clutch sizes. Body condition of young was also better in the former
group, but only in 1993 (a high-food year). Independently of year, mean local survival of parents with complete broods at
hatching was lower than for parents raising reduced broods. These results supported only the insurance-egg hypothesis which
says that surplus eggs may be an insurance against the failure of any egg, but parents may suffer reproductive costs when
all eggs hatch.

Sperm competition will be the inevitable consequence of polyandrous mating behavior if two or more males inseminate a single female. It has been demonstrated for a wide variety of animals that males adapt to this situation behaviorally, physiologically and morphologically, e.g. by evolving relatively large testes size to produce more sperm. All pair-living primates investigated so far were found to have relatively small testes, suggesting a monandrous mating system. We investigated the relationship between extra-pair paternity (EPP) rate as a measure of sperm competition intensity and relative testes size in a pair-living primate, the fork-marked lemur (Phaner furcifer). Paternity exclusion analyses for seven offspring using six polymorphic DNA-microsatellite markers suggested a high EPP rate. Female nocturnal travel distances were longer during the mating season, suggesting that females take an active role in achieving extra-pair copulations (EPCs). Surprisingly, fork-marked lemur testes size was relatively small compared to 23 other lemuroid primates, a result that is in contrast to predictions of sperm competition theory. Neither possible behavioral and morphological adaptations to an alternative paternity guard (i.e. mate guarding), nor sampling biases, phylogenetic constraints, and population density effects explain the absence of large testes in a species with high EPP, a phenomenon also known from birds with moderate to low EPP rates. We conclude that more data are needed on the frequency of EPCs, the timing of in-pair and extra-pair copulations, as well as the role of female choice, to explain why males of some species apparently do not adapt to sperm competition.Communicated by S. Few studies have investigated the long-term fitness consequences of nestling size hierarchies in altricial birds. In this
study, we investigated whether or not the size rank order of siblings influences subsequent breeding success in the little
egret, Egretta garzetta. From a marking program allowing individual recognition of wild birds, we obtained data on the breeding success of 56 pairs
comprising individuals for which the size rank order was known. The breeding success in these pairs was positively influenced
by the age of the marked bird but negatively affected by the laying date of the pair and the size rank order of the marked
individual. There was also a significant difference between breeding colonies. We suggest two main hypotheses for a link between
size rank order of individuals and their breeding success and we discuss our results in relation to current hypotheses on
the adaptive value of hatching asynchrony.

Both theoretical and empirical work has shown that group size increases with increasing ecological constraints on solitary breeding. Ecological constraints refer to extrinsic factors such as availability of breeding sites, food or mates. Common eider (Somateria mollissima) females pool their broods and share brood-rearing duties, or rear broods alone. Females are often in poor condition at hatching, as incubation is accomplished without feeding, and variation in body condition is largely environmentally induced and thus unpredictable. We found that the intensity of and duration of parental care that females provide is positively correlated with their body condition at hatching. This suggests that body condition is an ecological constraint on successful solitary breeding. We further observed that group productivity in common eider broods is a decelerating function of the number of tending females. As predicted, females in poorer condition (i.e., facing stronger ecological constraints) were found in larger groups. This result is straightforward if solitary tenders can enter any group at no cost. However, if entry is group-controlled, stable groups of non-relatives are predicted not to occur when per capita reproduction declines with group size. The N-person staying incentive model permits groups to form under these conditions, because reproduction is unevenly divided between dominants and subordinates in the group. We discuss the plausibility of these alternative models of group size for understanding the grouping behavior of brood-caring female common eiders.Communicated by M. Webster 相似文献

Many fishes are characterized by intense sperm competition between males that use alternative mating tactics. In externally
fertilizing fishes, males’ proximity to females during spawning can be an important determinant of fertilization success.
Here, we assess how mating tactic, body length, speed during streak spawns, and periphery cover affect males’ proximity to
females during sperm competition in the externally fertilizing bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). Bluegill are characterized by three mating tactics referred to as parental, sneaker, and satellite. Parentals are territorial
and construct nests, while sneakers use a streaking behavior, and satellites use female mimicry to steal fertilizations from
parentals. We show that a small body length is important for sneakers but not for satellites to obtain a close position to
the female during spawning. Specifically, smaller sneakers obtain a closer position to females than larger sneakers in part
by positioning themselves closer on the periphery of a parental’s nest before streaking but show no difference in the speed
at which they streak. The amount of peripheral vegetation around a parental’s nest did not appear to affect proximity of sneakers
to females, and there was no relationship between the amount of peripheral vegetation and the frequency of intrusions by either
sneakers or satellites. Finally, parentals were farther from the female when a sneaker or satellite intruded than when they
spawned alone with the female. 相似文献
