Testosterone and the allocation of reproductive effort in male house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) 总被引:9,自引:1,他引:8
Testosterone has been proposed to serve as the mediator that controls the relative effort that an individual male bird will
devote to mating effort versus parental effort. Here, we demonstrate a testosterone-influenced trade-off between parental
and mating efforts in male house finches. Male house finches with experimentally elevated testosterone fed nestlings at a
significantly lower rate, but sang at a higher rate than males without manipulated testosterone levels. Females mated to testosterone-implanted
males fed nestlings at a significantly higher rate than females mated to males without testosterone implants, resulting in
similar feeding rates for both treated and untreated pairs. The effects of testosterone on male house finches, however, were
not as dramatic as the effects of testosterone observed in some other socially monogamous species of birds. Because extra-pair
copulations are uncommon in house finches and males provide substantial amounts of parental care, these more modest effects
may be due to differences in how the allocation of reproductive effort affects the costs and benefits of different reproductive
behaviors.

2,6-Dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ), an emerging water disinfection by-product, is widely detected in water resources. However, its potential effects on the reproductive system are largely unknown. Here, we investigated the long-term effects of 2,6-DCBQ on gonadal development by exposing zebrafish from 15 to 180 days postfertilization (dpf). Following exposure to 2,6-DCBQ (20 and 100 µg/L), female-specific effects including delayed puberty onset, retarded ovarian growth and breakdown of the zona radiata were observed, resulting in subfertility in adult females. Adverse effects in folliculogenesis disappeared two months after cessation of 2,6-DCBQ administration. In contrast, no adverse impacts were noted in male testes. The effects on females were associated with significant reduction in 17β-estradiol (E2) level, suggesting a role for 2,6-DCBQ in anti-estrogenic activity. E2 level change in blood was further supported by dysregulated expression of genes (cyp19a1a, fshb, kiss3, esr2b, vtg1, and vtg3) related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonad-liver (HPGL) axis. The present study demonstrates for the first time that 2,6-DCBQ induces reproductive impairments in female zebrafish through disrupting 17β-estradiol level. 相似文献

Emigration in small mammals may be strongly related to social factors, but direct observations of emigrants are rare. Feral
house mice (Mus domesticus) were studied using a population cage system that allowed continuous observation of individually marked animals. Mice that
left their natal cage and took up residence in cages that could only be reached by crossing a water barrier were defined as
emigrants. Six pairs of house mice with their litters were placed in the system, and data on aggressive interactions, body
weight, reproduction, mortality and emigration were collected daily. Both sexes emigrated, but males did so twice as often
as females. Population density was not correlated with the frequency of aggression, and had no effect on the weight of emigrating
individuals. Male emigrants suffered more aggression before emigration than their non-emigrant brothers of the same age; they
were aggressively driven out by other males, predominantly by the father. Female emigration depended on the female’s chances
of reproduction. The probability of a female reproducing decreased with increasing birth order. Females born in a late litter,
who therefore had only a low chance of reproduction, dispersed earlier than those of early litters. Resident males were reproductively
suppressed. Male offspring had two different strategies for attaining top rank. They could develop rapidly and reach sexual
maturity early on, but face competition with the father, risking being forced to emigrate. Alternatively, they could develop
slowly, stay within their family and wait for a chance to take over the dominant position. It is concluded that emigration
in male and female feral house mice is caused by intrasexual competition.

In a variety of fish species with paternal care of offspring, females prefer to spawn in nests that already contain eggs.
This female preference has been hypothesized to explain egg thievery in male sticklebacks, allopaternal care of eggs in minnows,
and the evolution of egg-mimicking body features in male cichlids and darters. Here we employ microsatellite-based parentage
analyses to evaluate the reproductive success of striped darter (Etheostoma virgatum) males that appear to utilize two of these functionally related tactics to entice females to spawn in their nests. In an
isolated population (Clear Creek, Ky.), we observed that breeding males develop conspicuous white spots on their pectoral
fins. If these spots are egg mimics, as we suspect, then this represents the fourth independent evolutionary origin of egg
mimicry documented to date in darters, the first based on pigmentation (as opposed to physical structures), and the first
in which the egg mimics vary greatly in number among males. From direct counts of microsatellite genotypes in clutches of
embryos, at least 3.8 females contributed to the progeny within a typical nest, and females tended to spawn preferentially
with males that were larger and displayed more egg-mimic spots. In another population (Hurricane Creek, Tenn.) without egg
mimics, the multi-locus genetic data document that allopaternal care is common, especially among the smallest males who sometimes
tend nests containing their own as well as an earlier sire's offspring. Thus, these foster males had adopted egg-containing
nests and then successfully spawned with subsequent females. Overall, the genetic data on paternity and maternity, in conjunction
with field observations, suggest that egg mimicry and allopaternal care are two mate-attracting reproductive tactics employed
by striped darter males to exploit female preferences for spawning in nests with 'eggs'.

Reproductive success in a low skew, communal breeding mammal: the banded mongoose, Mungos mungo 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Jason S. Gilchrist 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》2006,60(6):854-863
In most cooperatively breeding species, reproduction is monopolised by a subset of group members. However, in some species
most or all individuals breed. The factors that affect reproductive success in such species are vital to understanding why
multiple females breed. A key issue is whether or not the presence of other breeders is costly to an individual’s reproductive
success. This study examines the factors that affect the post-parturition component of reproductive success in groups of communal-breeding
banded mongoose (Mungos mungo), where up to ten females breed together. Per-litter reproductive success was low (only 18% of pups survived from birth to
independence). Whilst singular breeding was wholly unsuccessful, there were costs associated with breeding in the presence
of increasing numbers of other females and in large groups. Synchronisation of parturition increased litter success, probably
because it minimises the opportunity for infanticide or decreases competitive asymmetry between pups born to different females.
There was no evidence of inbreeding depression, and reproductive success was generally higher in litters where females only
had access to related males within their group. I conclude that communal breeding in female banded mongooses represents a
compromise between the benefits of group-living and communal pup care on the one hand, and competition between females to
maximise their personal reproductive success on the other. Such conflicts are likely to occur in most communal breeding species.
Whilst communal breeding systems are generally considered egalitarian, negative effects of co-breeders on individual reproductive
success is still an issue. 相似文献

Parastizopus armaticeps is a nocturnal subsocial detritivorous desert tenebrionid that produces very few offspring per brood. The two environmental
factors that constrain reproduction, rapid sand desiccation rate and food scarcity, are countered by biparental effort. Males
dig and extend breeding burrows, maintaining their moisture level; females forage on the surface at night for high-quality
detritus, the larval food. This was shown to be a scarce and unpredictable resource for which there is high competition. When
food was supplemented in a field experiment, offspring number and survivorship doubled and burrow failure due to desiccation
dropped from approximately half, the typical failure rate for unsupplemented burrows, to zero. Food supplementation did not,
however, increase larval foodstore size and there was no difference in the size of the offspring produced. Supplemented females
reallocated their time, foraging less and digging more with the male. This change in maternal behaviour patterns resulted
in deeper burrows which remained moist longer, thus extending the larval production period. Female foraging efficiency, particularly
food retrieval speed, determined how much time females could allocate to digging, consequently increasing the reproductive
success of the pair. Burrow depth and sand moisture level at the burrow base were the major correlates of reproductive success,
but the scarcity and unpredictability of high-quality food on the surface and the competition for this resource influenced
the number of offspring indirectly through their effect on female behaviour.

ABSTRACT: A generalized skew map for Louisiana streams was developed using data from Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas with 20 or more years of annual flood records. A comparison between the newly developed Louisiana Generalized Skew Map (LGSM) and the generalized skew map recommended by the U.S. Water Resources Council (WRCGSM) was performed. The mean square error for the LGSM was 16 percent less than that of WRCGSM in direct application of the two maps. Performance of the new map was compared with the WRCGSM and with a regional analysis procedure through its application to the Log Pearson Type 3 (LP3) distribution. Two-thirds of the stations tested had lower standardized root mean square deviations (SRMSD) by a narrow margin using the skew coefficients obtained from LGSM instead of WRCGSM. The regional analysis also performed as well as the LGSM in terms of SRMSD. Thus, it was concluded that both LGSM and the regional analysis provide a more reliable tool for flood frequency analysis for Louisiana streams with short annual flood records. 相似文献

Patterns of interbreeding between individuals are fundamental to the structure and maintenance of evolutionary boundaries between species. In corals, both hybridisation and reproductive isolation appear to be important evolutionary mechanisms. In this study, I examine evolutionary boundaries using morphological, molecular and reproductive criteria within the Acropora humilis species group at Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Five species and seven morphs are recognised on the basis of morphological appearance of features traditionally used to identify corals of the genus Acropora. In a molecular phylogenetic analysis, I examine relationships for the mitochondrial DNAs putative control region, using maximum-parsimony and maximum-likelihood methods. The reproductive criteria explore whether species and morphs are reproductively isolated on the basis of temporal or fertilisation barriers. Timing of gamete maturity is surveyed for each species and morph, from the month prior to and 3 months after the mass spawning. Time of spawning is documented at the levels of night and hour of spawning, and time taken for egg-sperm bundles to separate. Laboratory fertilisation experiments tested the potential of species and morphs to interbreed. High levels of intraspecific and extremely low or zero fertilisation levels between the five species indicated that they are valid species. Based on the combined assessment of morphological, molecular and reproductive criteria, A. humilis and A. gemmifera appear to be the most closely related species, which are most closely related to the remaining species in the following order: A. samoensis, A. monticulosa and A. digitifera. Evidence derived from one or more of these criteria suggest that the morphs (1) are at various stages of divergence from the species with which they share morphological characters, and (2) may indicate possible zones of speciation and hybridisation. Identification of morphs avoided the possibility of taxonomic error and was essential for accurate interpretation of evolutionary boundaries. Confirmation of morphology as an informative character of evolutionary boundaries is of great significance because most coral research projects rely on morphology as the primary tool for identification of species.Communicated by M.S. We investigated the possibility that male harassment of lactating females differed in relation to time of birth in the grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, on Sable Island, Nova Scotia. This was done by comparing the frequency of male disturbances, maternal performance and pup growth for females that either gave birth during the peak of the pupping season or after the peak. Of the females, 58% gave birth in a 7-day period near the beginning of the pupping period, when the operational sex ratio was 2–4 females per male. Late in the pupping period the operational sex ratio reversed to about 1 female for every 2 males. The relative frequency of disturbances by males was significantly greater for late-pupping mothers than for peak-pupping ones (1.9 vs. 1.4 encounters/h). Females that gave birth late also were disturbed by males 3 times more often than females that gave birth during the peak (3.4 vs. 1.1 % of observation time). Late-pupping mothers spent 22% less time suckling (4.0 vs. 5.1 % of observation time), had 30% slower growing pups (1.7 vs. 2.4 kg/d), and weaned pups that were 16% lighter (45.6 vs. 54.0 kg). The effect of birth time on pup mass gain and weaning mass was not attributable to factors such as maternal mass, pup birth mass or pup sex. We conclude that the reduced maternal performance is likely the result of the increased male harassment. As reduced weaning mass can lead to reduced juvenile survival, male harassment may have contributed to the enhanced reproductive synchrony in this species. 相似文献
