Concentrations of 86 congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined for 25 adult female and 25 adult male burbot (Lota lota) from Lake Erie. Significant differences in mean proportions of total PCB concentration between males and females ages 14–17 were found for 26 congeners. Males generally had higher mean proportions of hexachloro congeners, whereas females had higher mean proportions of more highly chlorinated congeners. In contrast, only four congeners exhibited differences between males and females ages 6–13 in mean proportions of total PCB. Therefore, the sexual difference in PCB congener distribution widened for older burbot. Males ages 14–17 also had higher proportions of certain hexachloro congeners than the other three demographic groups (males ages 6–13, females ages 6–13, and females ages 14–17) we examined. The reverse was true for more highly chlorinated congeners. The results supported a previous hypothesis that older male burbot spent a substantial amount of time feeding in the vicinity of mouths of rivers with sediment contaminated with PCBs. However, additional studies are needed to clarify and corroborate this apparent “hot spot” effect, such as seasonal movements, spatial distributions, and diet of burbot; and PCB congener distributions of various species of prey fishes captured at various locations throughout the eastern basin of Lake Erie and at different locations in the contaminated rivers. 相似文献

Costs and benefits associated with matings and the effects of mating frequency on fitness commonly differ between the sexes. As a result, outcrossing simultaneous hermaphrodites may prefer to copulate in the more rewarding sex role, generating conflicts over sperm donation and sperm receipt between mates. Because recent sex role preference models remain controversial, we contrast here some of their assumptions and predictions in the sea slug Chelidonura sandrana. For this hermaphrodite with sperm storage and internal fertilisation, risk-averse models assume that fitness pay-offs are constantly higher in the female than in the male function in any single mating. Moreover, excluding mutual partner assessment, these models predict male mating behaviour to be independent of receiver traits. The competing gender ratio hypothesis assumes that relative fitness pay-offs, and thus the preferred mating roles, vary and may reverse between matings and predicts that ejaculation strategies co-vary with receiver quality. We found that field mating rates of C. sandrana substantially exceeded what is required to maintain female fertility and fecundity, indicating large variation in direct female benefits between matings. We further demonstrate that male copulation duration adaptively increased with partner body size (i.e. fecundity) but decreased with recent partner promiscuity. These findings are compatible with the gender ratio hypothesis but contradict risk-averse models. 相似文献

Although many avian eggs appear to be cryptically colored, many species also lay vibrant blue green eggs. This seemingly conspicuous
coloration has puzzled biologists since Wallace, as natural selection should favor reduced egg visibility to minimize predation
pressure. The sexual signaling hypothesis posits that blue green egg coloration serves as a signal of female quality and that
males exert post-mating sexual selection on this trait by investing more in the nests of females laying more intensely blue
green eggs. This hypothesis has received mixed support to date, and most previous studies have been conducted in cavity-nesting
species where male evaluation of his partner’s egg coloration, relative to that of other females, may be somewhat limited.
In this study, we test the sexual signaling hypothesis in colonially nesting ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) where males have ample opportunity to assess their mate’s egg coloration relative to that of other females. We used correlational
data and an experimental manipulation to test four assumptions and predictions of the sexual signaling hypothesis: (1) blue
green pigmentation should be limiting to females; (2) extent of blue green egg coloration should relate to female quality;
(3) extent of blue green egg coloration should relate to offspring quality; and (4) males should provide more care to clutches
with higher blue green chroma. Our data provide little support for these predictions of the sexual signaling hypothesis in
ring-billed gulls. In light of this and other empirical data, we encourage future studies to consider additional hypotheses
for the evolution of blue green egg coloration. 相似文献

In many salmonid species, males exhibit morphological dimorphism associated with alternative mating behaviors. ”Precocious
males” have a small body size with little or no development of sexual characters and adopt sneaking to gain access to females,
while ”migratory males” of large body size and well-developed secondary sexual characters fight. We quantified selection on
precocious male parr of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) under simulated natural conditions to examine the contribution of morphology to sneaking success. In contrast to the prediction
that sneaking behavior favors small body size, we detected selection favoring relatively large body size for sneaking success.
This selection pressure was caused by the dominance hierarchy within parr and may have been facilitated by indifference of
dominant migratory males to parr. Unlike the secondary sexual characters exhibited by migratory male salmon, such as the hooked
snout and humped back, no morphological characters other than body size contributed to the reproductive success of masu salmon
parr. This non-contribution may have been responsible for the lack of development of sexual characters in precocious males.

To optimally allocate resources between workers, reproductive females, and males, ant workers have to be able to identify
the sex of larvae and raise them differently. The ability of workers to discriminate between the sexes in the brood was tested
in colonies of queenless ponerine ants, Diacamma sp., from Japan. The ratio of male eggs in the egg pile was increased experimentally. This manipulation resulted in a corresponding
increase in the ratio of adult males, suggesting that Diacamma workers do not raise the sexes differently.

Optimal parental investment usually differs depending on the sex of the offspring. However, parents in most organisms cannot
discriminate the sex of their young until those young are energetically independent. In a species with physical male–male
competition, males are often larger and usually develop sexual ornaments, so male offspring are often more costly to produce.
However, Onthophagus dung beetles (Coleoptera; Scarabaeidae) are highly dimorphic in secondary sexual characters, but sexually monomorphic in
body size, despite strong male–male competition for mates. We demonstrate that because parents provide all resources required
by their offspring before adulthood, O.
atripennis exhibits no sexual size dimorphism irrespective of sexual selection pressure favoring sexual dimorphism. By constructing
a graphic model with three fitness curves (for sons, daughters, and expected fitness return for parents), we demonstrate that
natural selection favors parents that provide both sons and daughters with the optimal amount of investment for sons, which
is far greater than that for daughters. This is because the cost of producing small sons, that are unable to compete for mates,
is far greater than the cost of producing daughters that are larger than necessary. This theoretical prediction can explain
sexual dimorphism without sexual size dimorphism, widely observed in species with crucial parental care such as dung beetles
and leaf-rolling beetles, and may provide an insight into the enigmatic relationship between sexual size dimorphism and sexual
dimorphism. 相似文献

We performed male attraction experiments and staged courtship sequences to test for non-random mating with respect to social
behavioral phenotype in the comb-footed spider, Anelosimus studiosus. While asocial behavior is the dominant phenotype in all A. studiosus populations examined to date, a social phenotype approaches a frequency of 15% in colder environments. We collected test
subjects from higher latitude polymorphic populations and scored all individuals as to their behavioral phenotype prior to
their use in these trials. Males of both phenotypes differentially approached and courted social females over asocial females
and no-spider controls. By offering males different numbers of females of one type vs. the other in subsequent trials, we
determined that the difference in attractiveness between the two phenotypes social/asocial is 1.5/1. Both the web produced
by a female and a female that has been removed from its web attract males. We suggest that the male attracting pheromone is
present on females and is also attached to silk threads. Staged encounters completed between males and females of the respective
phenotypes demonstrated that courting males suffer significantly less pre-copulatory sexual cannibalism with social females
than with asocial ones, and thus, female social tendency is phenotypically linked to sexual aggression. We propose that the
male preference for social females is adaptive because of the observed asymmetry in courtship success. 相似文献

Simultaneous hermaphrodites have the opportunity to control the allocation of resources to the male and female function depending on the circumstances. Such flexibility also provides the possibility to influence sex allocation in the mating partner. To investigate this idea, we measured egg production (female investment) and sperm production as well as prostate gland size (both are part of male investment) under different mating regimes in the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. We find no evidence for the prediction from sex allocation theory that sperm production increases with mating frequency. However, we do find that animals with more mating opporunities develop smaller prostate glands, in which seminal fluid is produced. Moreover, repeated mating increases egg production, thus shifting allocation towards the female function, and probably decreases growth. So, our data hint at a three-way trade-off between part of the male function (prostate gland), female function, and growth. Interestingly, sex allocation seems to be shifted in the opposite direction from the one predicted by theory. We discuss how this feminization is suggestive of a direct manipulation by the sperm donor, probably to stimulate immediate sperm use. 相似文献

In ant societies, workers do not usually reproduce but gain indirect fitness benefits from raising related offspring produced
by the queen. One of the preconditions of this worker self-restraint is sufficient fertility of the queen. The queen is, therefore,
expected to signal her fertility. In Camponotus floridanus, workers can recognize the presence of a highly fertile queen via her eggs, which are marked with the queen's specific hydrocarbon
profile. If information on fertility is encoded in the hydrocarbon profile of eggs, we expect workers to be able to differentiate
between eggs from highly and weakly fertile queens. We found that workers discriminate between these eggs solely on the basis
of their hydrocarbon profiles which differ both qualitatively and quantitatively. This pattern is further supported by the
similarity of the egg profiles of workers and weakly fertile queens and the similar treatment of both kinds of eggs. Profiles
of queen eggs correspond to the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of the respective queens. Changes in the cuticular profiles
are associated with the size of the colony the queen originates from and her current egg-laying rate. However, partial correlation
analysis indicates that only colony size predicts the cuticular profile. Colony size is a buffered indicator of queen fertility
as it is a consequence of queen productivity within a certain period of time, whereas daily egg-laying rate varies due to
cyclical oviposition. We conclude that surface hydrocarbons of eggs and the cuticular profiles of queens both signal queen
fertility, suggesting a major role of fertility signals in the regulation of reproduction in social insects. 相似文献

Independence, not conflict, characterizes dart-shooting and sperm exchange in a hermaphroditic snail
Although the sexes are united in hermaphrodites, conflict can still occur because the male and female functions have separate
interests. We examined the evidence for conflict in the mating system of the terrestrial snail Cantareus aspersus (formerly Helix aspersa) where sharp, calcareous darts are ‘shot’ during courtship. We predicted that the use of the dart would either reflect or
create conflict and this would be evident in either the courtship behavior or the transference of sperm. Previous studies
demonstrated that the dart functions after sperm transfer to increase sperm survival. Using detailed observations of mating
snails, we examined the factors that determine dart shooting order, the behavioral responses after being hit by a dart, the
accuracy of dart shooting, and the allocation of sperm resources. We found that each dart was shot independently, and each
animal appeared to be interested only in getting off the best possible shot, probably one that penetrates deeply near the
genital pore. There is no evidence of mating conflict. Every snail transfers sperm to its partner, and the size of the donation
does not depend on the success or failure of either snail’s dart shot. Although the receipt of a dart does not appear to cause
harm, it may produce indirect costs due to the partial loss of control over fertilization. We conclude that mating in C. aspersus is a partnership in which independent actors demonstrate unconditional reciprocity during courtship and sperm transfer. 相似文献
