Large body size confers a competitive advantage in animal contests but does not always determine the outcome. Here we explore
the trade-off between short-term achievement of high social status and longer-term life history costs in animals which vary
in competitive ability. Using laboratory mice, Mus musculus, as a model system, we show that small competitors can initially maintain dominance over larger males by increasing investment
in olfactory status signalling (scent-marking), but only at the cost of reduced growth rate and body size. As a result they
become more vulnerable to dominance reversals later in life. Our results also provide the first empirical information about
life history costs of olfactory status signals.

Females often base their mating preferences on male sexual secondary traits that are used to settle contests among males. Such traits are likely to be honest indicators of male quality if they are constantly used during costly male–male agonistic interactions. Carotenoid signals have been shown to work as a handicap because they are costly to produce. However, the role of carotenoids as “honest” signals during male contests is less clear, and it is not known whether a carotenoid-based trait can serve in both male–male competition and female choice. In this study, we studied the dual function of a carotenoid feather ornament in the rock sparrow (Petronia petronia), a bird species in which both sexes have a yellow throat patch whose size positively correlates with phenotypic measures. First, we investigated, in a field study, whether the size of a male’s yellow patch correlates with his ability to acquire a territory. Second, we tested the signal function of the yellow patch in two male–male interaction in captivity experiments. Finally, we measured female preference for males differing in throat patch size in a mate choice experiment. Our experiments revealed that the size of a male’s throat patch positively correlated with the number of nest boxes he was able to defend. Moreover, in controlled conditions, males with relatively large yellow patches had earlier access to food than those with small patches. Also, in an experiment in which a dummy rock sparrow with an experimentally manipulated yellow patch was positioned near a feeder, latency to feed by focal birds positively correlated with dummy patch size. Lastly, in a dichotomous mate choice experiment, females showed a proximity preference for males whose patch was experimentally enlarged. Taken together, these results suggest that the same carotenoid feather signal may be used in both male–male competition and female choice in this passerine bird. 相似文献

Group living confers both benefits and costs to the individuals involved. Benefits may include enhanced defense, thermoregulation,
and increased foraging efficiency while costs often involve competition for resources such as food, shelter, and mates. Communication
provides a medium of exchange among individuals engaged in either cooperative or competitive interactions. The functional
analysis of signals within groups therefore requires testing both cooperative and competitive functions, although the latter
is infrequently done. In this paper, I study the use of two vibrational signals in a gregarious, processionary Australian
sawfly larva, Perga affinis: tapping and contractions. Tapping involves striking the substrate with the sclerotized portion of the abdominal tail and
a contraction is a fast, whole-body twitch, which is both tactile and vibrational in its transmission. For tapping, I first
demonstrate that it is a form of communication, as tapping of one larva elicits tapping in another, and that it is transmitted
through substrate vibrations. I then test whether the signal is mostly cooperative or competitive in nature by examining it
in light of two hypotheses: (1) the Group Coordination hypothesis, stating that the signal functions to maintain group cohesiveness
and (2) the Competitive Signaling hypothesis, stating that tapping serves as a competitive assessment signal between larvae
while feeding. For contractions, I test only the group coordination hypothesis that they serve to coordinate and initiate
group movement. Results support the group coordination hypothesis for each signal. While feeding, lone larvae (without potential
competitors) were significantly more likely to tap than those in groups, and this trend continued in non-feeding situations.
Contractions regularly preceded periods of group movement during processions and were given with increasing frequency before
departure from preforaging clusters. The vibrational signals in this processionary species likely function cooperatively to
maintain group cohesiveness and coordinate movement. 相似文献

Snapping shrimp are highly aggressive decapod crustaceans, with large, asymmetric chelae. Body size determines the outcome
of both inter- and intrasexual interactions. Both the body and chela sizes of mated pairs are correlated, but the body size
correlation is significantly stronger. In competitive interactions between individuals of the same sex, larger individuals
usually win. Because the size of the major chela is a function of body size in both males and females, chela size could be
used to assess body size early in interactions, before engaging in more high risk behaviors. To determine whether the major
chela is used in size assessment, I presented shrimp with isolated chelae. Male snapping shrimp responded aggressively to
isolated chelae when they were fixed open in a display posture, and the degree of aggressive response depended on the relative
size of the chela. These data provide direct experimental evidence for the use of a visual signal in size assessment. Females,
in contrast, responded aggressively to both the open and closed chela, and their responses did not depend on relative size.
This sex difference in response may be due to differences in the value of certain resources, such as shelters, to males and
females: females may be more willing to respond aggressively regardless of the apparent size of their opponent, in order to
acquire more reliable information regarding size, motivation or fighting ability.
