We sampled 92 wetlands from four different basins in the United States to quantify observer repeatability in rapid wetland
condition assessment using the Delaware Rapid Assessment Protocol (DERAP). In the Inland Bays basin of Delaware, 58 wetland
sites were sampled by multiple observers with varying levels of experience (novice to expert) following a thorough training
workshop. In the Nanticoke (Delaware/Maryland), Cuyahoga (Ohio), and John Day (Oregon) basins, 34 wetlands were sampled by
two expert teams of observers with minimal protocol training. The variance in observer to observer scoring at each site was
used to calculate pooled standard deviations (SDpool), coefficients of variation, and signal-to-noise ratios for each survey. The results showed that the experience level of
the observer had little impact on the repeatability of the final rapid assessment score. Training, however, had a large impact
on observer to observer repeatability. The SDpool in the Inland Bay survey with training (2.2 points out of a 0–30 score) was about half that observed in the other three basins
where observers had minimal training (SDpool = 4.2 points). Using the results from the survey with training, we would expect that two sites assessed by different, trained
observers who obtain DERAP scores differing by more than 4 points are highly likely to differ in ecological condition, and
that sites with scores that differ by 2 or fewer points are within variability that can be attributed to observer differences. 相似文献

A field study was established to investigate the chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols in Chicago, IL. One goal of
this study was to determine the influence of precursor trace gases and local meteorology on concentrations of secondary aerosol
ionic species. This paper describes the method details, shows the method is analytically valid, and reports overall as well
as some specific results found during the field study. Two particulate air samples were collected per day onto quartz fiber
filters at the Loyola University Chicago Air Station during the summer months in 2002–2004. In parallel, mixing ratios of
ozone and nitrogen oxides were monitored and weather parameters were recorded. Particulates were extracted from the filter
substrates and the subsequent solutions were analyzed by ion chromatography for anions, including low molecular weight organic
acids, and cations. A washing procedure was implemented to reduce the high background values of the quartz fiber filters.
Method validation showed that the collection method was efficient for all ions with exception of nitrate, whose efficiency
of 70% indicated losses caused by volatilization. The extraction method also proved efficient for both field and laboratory
samples, and the repeatability of the method was high with relative standard deviations less than 10% for all ions. Reproducibility
of the results was determined by comparison of sulfate to sulfur analyzed by total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
and proved to be high as well. Concentrations differed significantly between the three summer studies due to varying levels

The present study describes the application of different solid-phase extraction techniques for the extraction, separation, and quantitative determination of 10 commonly used herbicides with different chemical structures (chlorsulfuron, diuron, bentazone, linuron, chlorpropham, fenoxoprop-ethyl, MCPA, diclofop-methyl, fluazifop-butyl, trifluraline) in water. Octadecyl (C18) Empore extraction disks, octadecyl (C18), and stryene divinylbenzene (SDB) Bond Elut Env cartridges were compared for solid-phase extraction efficiency. Herbicides were separated and quantified by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) with simultaneous separation on two columns of differing polarity (C18 and CN) to confirm identification. Analytical separation was performed simultaneously on C18 and CN columns. Reanalysis of the sample extracts on a (cyano) CN column were used to confirm the identity of these compounds. Method optimization and validation parameters were presented in this work. Recoveries varied from 76.0% to 99.0% for C18 disks, from 75.1% to 100.0% for C18 cartridges, and from 54.0% to 98.0% for SDB cartridges over concentrations at 0.025–0.4 μg L?1. Environmental regulations that grandfather existing plants, by not holding them to the same strict standards as new plants, may have the unintended consequence of retarding new investment. If new plants are cleaner, then this effect may increase pollution in the short run. I develop a dynamic model of a facility’s decisions over scrapping and abatement, which depend on capital depreciation, profitability shocks, and environmental policy. Using data from fossil fuel fired boilers at electric power plants, I estimate the structural parameters of the model and assess the impact of grandfathering in the Clean Air Act on sulfur dioxide emissions. Counterfactual policy simulations show that an increase in the stringency of performance standards would have led to a decrease in investment in new boilers. However, this does not lead to increased emissions, since there is less investment in dirtier coal boilers as compared to relatively cleaner oil or natural gas boilers. 相似文献
