Sectoral analysis, a new branch of political science, alleges that mineral extraction creates a socio-political climate that promotes inflexible statism, which in turn leads to substandard development performance. The theory, that mineral economies underperform bureaucratically and economically, is said not only to hold in a post-dictive sense for the mature mineral economies, such as Zambia, but also in a predictive sense for the newer mineral economies, such as Ecuador. This essay reviews and assesses this hypothesis in the light of the empirical evidence comparing mineral production, state capacity, and economic performance. Why slaughter? The cultural dimensions of Britain's foot and mouth disease control policy, 1892–2001

In 1892, the British agricultural authorities introduced a policy of slaughtering animals infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD). This measure endured throughout the 20th century and formed a base line upon which officials superimposed the controversial "contiguous cull" policy during the devastating 2001 epidemic. Proponents of the slaughter frequently emphasized its capacity to eliminate FMD from Britain, and claimed that it was both cheaper and more effective than the alternative policies of isolation and vaccination. However, their discussions reveal that a less obvious but nonetheless important reason for maintaining the slaughter policy was the conviction that in its manner of operation and its outcomes, it benefited the state and status of the British nation. To its supporters, slaughter was far more than a method of disease control; it acted also as a moralizing and civilizing force, an indicator of veterinary ability and a "virility symbol" of British international leadership. This "cultural" rationale for FMD control by slaughter declined during the late 20th century and was wholly undermined by the 2001 epidemic, when extensive culling failed to convey the intended image of an organized, enlightened Britain. 相似文献

可吸入颗粒物(PM10)已成为北京市首要空气污染物,严重影响城市环境质量及居民健康.本研究采集了北京市2008~2009年非采暖期与采暖期两个不同时期不同粒径(0.3、0.5、3.0和5.0μm)的大气颗粒物浓度,利用空间分析方法研究其分布规律;同时收集同期患呼吸系统疾病的病人数据,对其进行统计分析;再在回归分析的基础上,运用灰色关联模型探讨可吸入颗粒物与呼吸系统疾病的相关性.结果表明,细颗粒的空间分布情况相异,而粗颗粒物分布规律大致相同.呼吸系统疾病与可吸入颗粒物浓度有一定的关联,采暖期是呼吸系统疾病的高发期,可吸入颗粒物在采暖期对呼吸系统疾病的发病率影响相对较高.无论在采暖期还是非采暖期,细颗粒物的浓度均高于粗颗粒物,且细颗粒物对呼吸系统疾病的影响较大. 相似文献

This paper illustrates a method based on local likelihood (LL) for detecting disease clusters. The approach is based on estimating
a lasso distance for each region: within which regions are considered to be clustered. An important advantage in implementing
this approach is that it does not require any special Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) algorithm, e.g., reversible jump MCMC,
which is essential in hidden Markov model approach. Another advantage is that extending the model to incorporate covariates
is straightforward. We illustrate three ways of doing this by using Eastern Germany lip cancer data. By using simulated data,
we have made a comparison with the BYM model [Besag et al. (1991) Annals of the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, 43, 1–59] and the mixture model [Lawson and Clark (2002) Disease Mapping and Risk Assessment for Public Health, Chapman and Hall]. We also did a limited examination of the ability of the LL model to recover true relative risk under
different priors for lasso parameter. In order to check the edge effects, which has been overlooked in many spatial clustering
models for disease mapping but deserves special attention as it lacks observable neighbors, we have adapted here a simple
approach to observe the changes in relative risks when the edge regions are omitted.

To advance the understanding of socio‐relational sources of employee creativity, we investigate the effect of a good marriage on workplace creativity. Drawing on family–work enrichment theory, we propose and test the idea that a satisfying marriage boosts a spillover of psychological resources from family to work that enhances employees' workplace creativity. Using survey data collected from 548 spouse–employee–supervisor triads, we find an indirect positive relationship between employees' marital satisfaction and workplace creativity through a spillover of psychological resources from family to work. We also find that this spillover is most pronounced when both employees and their spouses are satisfied with their marriage. The results further demonstrate that the indirect effect of marital satisfaction on workplace creativity through the spillover of psychological resources is significant for employees with a low creative personality, but not for those with a high creative personality. Causes of Keshan–Beck disease (KBD) are still being probed and monitored in China. Relationships between trace elements from eco-environmental systems and KBD are poorly understood although relationships between environmental Se and human health have received extensive attention. In order to investigate relationships between eco-environmental geochemistry and KBD, we selected the Chousang KBD area in Yao County, Shaanxi Province, China, as an example of a prevailing KBD area applying I–Se-rich salts instead of utilizing Se-rich fertilisers on food crops to prevent local residents from developing KBD before 1995. Environmentally geochemical samples (rocks, soils, plants and children's hair) were collected from the Chousang KBD area. Soils in the study area contain 0.11±0.02 µg Se g–1, 0.75±0.11 µg Mo g–1, and 34.5±1.5 µg B g–1 on average, indicating that the study area is a deficient-Se–Mo–B area. Se (0.07±0.007 µg g–1), Mo (0.35±0.09 µg g–1) and B (3±0 µg g–1) contents are low in wheat and corn used as a daily main food staple of local inhabitants. It is indicated that the study area is deficient in environmental Se–Mo–B for the local residents. Se contents of children's hair from the Yangyuan Elementary School in the study area range from 0.09 to 0.26 µg Se g–1 with an average of 0.165±0.05 µg Se g–1 (n=10) in this KBD endemic area. Due to the low levels of Se, Mo and B available in soils and rocks, crops including wheat and corn are deficient in these elements, accordingly, the deficiency of Se, Mo and B in this area may be linked to the daily consumption of wheat and corn deficient in Se, Mo and B. Therefore, local inhabitants should be encouraged to fertilise mixtures of Se, Mo and B on crop plants in order to avoid development of KBD and guarantee a good harvest of crops. 相似文献

新型抗毒素是一类由Penicilin sp.产生的抗病毒物质,其中喷雾使用50-400mg/L,在菜豆和黄瓜上测定对黄瓜花叶病毒(Cocumber mosaic virus,CMV)的印化效果分别为52.9%-87.5%和41.8%-61.0%;在黄瓜上于接种前后分别喷施200mg/L,对病害初侵染的作用效果分别为80.3%和65.3%,试验结果表明该类新型抗毒对黄瓜花叶病具有印化病毒粒子、抑制病害初侵染和干扰过氧化酶的活性等作用。 相似文献
