The aim of this study was to identify possible relationships between biochemical- superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione
peroxidase (GPx), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and chemical (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe) contaminants from relatively clean area (Middle Bay) and heavily polluted
area (Inner Bay) of the Izmir Bay. Sampling of mussels was performed in the beginning of May 2004. Mussel digestive glands
have been used for biochemical assays. Trace metal content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer using standard
procedures. Metal contents in mussels collected at polluted site increased compared to the middle part of the bay. While there
was a positive correlation between metals and SOD enzyme activity, there was a negative correlation between metals and GPx
enzyme activity. An increase was observed in SOD enzyme activity and a decrease of GPx enzyme activity at the inner part of

The aim of the present study is the comparative examination of accumulation and detoxification of Cu and Hg in digestive gland and gills of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis, using atomic absorption spectrophotometry and autometallography. Mussels were exposed to 0.08 mg L−1 Cu, 0.08 mg L−1 Hg, as well as to a mixture of 0.08 mg L−1 Hg and 0.08 mg L−1 Cu for 11 d. After the experimental exposure, animals were kept under laboratory conditions for a detoxification period of 7 d. An antagonistic effect of Cu against to Hg accumulation was noted in the digestive gland of mussels after the experimental exposure, as well as after the detoxification period, supporting the protective role of Cu against to Hg toxicity in this tissue. Digestive gland was suggested as a main organ for Hg accumulation and gills as a target position for Cu accumulation. Additionally, lower time was evaluated for Hg detoxification in the digestive gland and gills of mussels, in relation to those addressed for Cu detoxification in the same tissues. The evaluation of black silver deposits (BSD) extent performed in digestive gland and gills was suggested as a less sensitive approach, in relation to atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), to indentify the concentration of heavy metals in tissues of mussels. The toxic effects of Hg, Cu and a mixture of them on lysosomal system of the digestive cells are also discussed. 相似文献

The discharge of oil well produced water (PW) provides a constant source of contaminants to the marine environment including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylated phenols, metals and production chemicals. High concentrations of PW cause adverse effects to exposed biota, including reduced survival, growth and reproduction. Here we explore the effects of PW on immune function in the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Mussels were exposed for 21 days to sublethal PW concentrations (0.125-0.5%) and cellular parameters were measured. Cell viability, phagocytosis and cytotoxicity were inhibited after exposure to 0.25% and 0.5% PW, whilst the 0.125% PW treatment produced significant increases in these biomarker responses. This biphasic response was only observed after 7 days exposure; longer exposure periods led to a reduction in immune parameters. Results indicate that PW concentrations close to the discharge point cause modulation to cellular immunity. The implications for longer-term disease resistance are discussed. 相似文献

Chloride concentrations in surface waters have increased significantly, a rise attributed to road salt use. In Canada, this may be a concern for endangered freshwater mussels, many with ranges limited to southern Ontario, Canada’s most road-dense region. The acute toxicity of NaCl was determined for glochidia, the mussel’s larval stage. The 24 h EC50s of four (including two Canadian endangered) species ranged from 113-1430 mg Cl L−1 (reconstituted water, 100 mg CaCO3 L−1). To determine how mussels would respond to a chloride pulse, natural river water (hardness 278-322 mg CaCO3 L−1) was augmented with salt. Lampsilis fasciola glochidia were significantly less sensitive to salt in natural water (EC50s 1265-1559 mg Cl L−1) than in reconstituted water (EC50 285 mg L−1). Chloride data from mussel habitats revealed chloride reaches levels acutely toxic to glochidia (1300 mg L−1). The increased salinization of freshwater could negatively impact freshwater mussels, including numerous species at risk. 相似文献

Several congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were monitored in 14 different sampling stations of Lake Maggiore, the second largest Italian lake in regard to surface, volume and average depth, using the sentinel-organism Zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). Results revealed a moderate contamination with summation operatorPBDE levels (BDE-17, -28, -47, -66, -71, -85, -99, -100, -138, -153, -154, -183, -190 and -209) ranging from 40 to 447ngg(-1) lipid weight which are similar to those found in environments polluted by deposition or atmospheric transport. The general order of decreasing congener contribution to the total load was BDE-47>-99>-100>-209, which closely reflected patterns observed in mussels collected in freshwater ecosystems worldwide. 相似文献

Results of 2 years monitoring of 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations in soft tissue of the species Mytilus galloprovincialis from Croatian part of the Adriatic coast are presented. The samples were collected at thirteen coastal stations (some of which are also a part of the Mediterranean Mussel Watch Project) in spring and autumn of 2010 and 2011. The collected mussels were ranging between 4 cm and 6 cm in shell length. After sample pre-treatment lead and polonium were radiochemically separated on Sr resin. 210Po was determined by alpha-particle spectrometry and 210Pb was determined, via 210Bi, by a low-level gas proportional counter. The results of 210Po activity concentrations were found to vary between (104 ± 11) and (1421 ± 81) Bq kg−1 dry weight while 210Pb activity concentrations were much lower and in range (8.2 ± 5.3)–(94.1 ± 29.8) Bq kg−1 dry weight. Higher 210Po and 210Pb activity concentrations were determined in spring period. The inter-site differences seen in their activity concentrations can be due to natural background levels of sites. The 210Po/210Pb activity concentration ratios in all cases exceeded unity for all mussel samples and ranged between 4.0 and 47.9. 相似文献

Mytilus edulis were exposed to 17β-estradiol (E2) and the synthetic estrogens ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and estradiol benzoate (EB) for 10 days. Two exposures were performed to determine their effect on vitellogenin (VTG) and estrogen receptor 2 (ER2) mRNA expression at different stages of the reproductive cycle. Significant natural variation was not observed in VTG mRNA expression, though ER2 mRNA expression displayed significantly lower values during January, February and July compared with other times of the year. A significant increase in VTG and ER2 mRNA expression was observed in mussels exposed to estrogens at the early stage of gametogenesis. In contrast, mature mussels displayed no statistically significant change in the VTG or ER2 mRNA expression. The data presented suggests that the reproductive physiology of molluscs, in terms of VTG and ER2 mRNA expression, may be susceptible to damage by environmental estrogens at certain points in their gametogenesis process. 相似文献

Marine and coastal quality assessment, based on test batteries involving a wide array of endpoints, organisms and test matrices, needs for setting up toxicity indices that integrate multiple toxicological measures for decision-making processes and that classify the continuous toxicity response into discrete categories according to the European Water Framework Directive.Two toxicity indices were developed for the lagoon environment such as the Venice Lagoon. Stepwise procedure included: the construction of a database that identified test-matrix pairs (indicators); the selection of a minimum number of ecotoxicological indicators, called toxicological core metrics (CMs-tox) on the basis of specific criteria; the development of toxicity scores for each CM-tox; the integration of the CMs-tox into two indices, the Toxicity Effect Index (TEI), based on the transformation of Toxic Unit (TU) data that were integrated as logarithmic sum, and the Weighted Average Toxicity Index (WATI), starting from toxicity classes integrated as weighted mean. The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive comparison of the effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from various tissues of Mytilus trossulus caused by in vitro exposure to several pesticides and metals, because results available in the literature are inconsistent, difficult to compare, and sometimes contradict each other. For this purpose, fraction S10 extracted from gills, digestive gland, mantle and muscles, and the whole soft tissue of the mussel was exposed to several pesticides (dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, fenitrothion, carbofuran and carbaryl) and metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg, Pb) at a wide range of concentrations. AChE was inhibited in 50% or more in all the tissues exposed to dichlorvos, Cu, Hg and the mixture of Cu+Cd, and in some tissues exposed to carbaryl and carbofuran. The IC50 was calculated where possible. No inhibition was found in the case of chlorpyrifos, Cd, Pb, and Zn. 相似文献
