Division of labour among workers is central to the organisation and ecological success of insect societies. If there is a genetic component to worker size, morphology or task preference, an increase in colony genetic diversity arising from the presence of multiple breeders per colony might improve division of labour. We studied the genetic basis of worker size and task preference in Formica selysi, an ant species that shows natural variation in the number of mates per queen and the number of queens per colony. Worker size had a heritable component in colonies headed by a doubly mated queen (h
2=0.26) and differed significantly among matrilines in multiple-queen colonies. However, higher levels of genetic diversity did not result in more polymorphic workers across single- or multiple-queen colonies. In addition, workers from multiple-queen colonies were consistently smaller and less polymorphic than workers from single-queen colonies. The relationship between task, body size and genetic lineage appeared to be complex. Foragers were significantly larger than brood-tenders, which may provide energetic or ergonomic advantages to the colony. Task specialisation was also often associated with genetic lineage. However, genetic lineage and body size were often correlated with task independently of each other, suggesting that the allocation of workers to tasks is modulated by multiple factors. Overall, these results indicate that an increase in colony genetic diversity does not increase worker size polymorphism but might improve colony homeostasis. 相似文献

The patterns of stimulus available to moths flying along pheromone plumes in a 3-m-long wind tunnel were characterized using a high frequency photoionization detector in conjunction with an inert tracer gas. Four contrasting flow regimes and source conditions were produced: odor released in pulses from a vertical and horizontal array of four sources, odor released continuously from a point source, and odor released continuously from a point source into an oscillatory wake. Although the four flow regimes produced plumes of intermittent and fluctuating concentration, there were considerable differences in the structure of the signal presented to the sensor. Pulses of tracer gas released at 10 Hz retained most of their longitudinal and lateral separation. The plume growing in the disturbed flow (`oscillatory'), was broader in its lateral extent than the plume growing in an undisturbed flow (`continuous'), and the concentrations in the former were lower at each downstream position. The signal recorded in the disturbed flow had higher intermittency, but the ratio between the peak concentration and the signal mean was lower than in the continuous plume. Time scales were typically longer in the tunnel than in a field setting, but length scales and the main features of intermittency and fluctuation were similar. Moths flying along plumes of pheromone in this and similar wind tunnels typically slow their velocity and narrow the lateral excursions of their flight track as they approach a pheromone source. Which features of the plumes measured in this study account for these behavioral reactions remains to be determined. 相似文献

Summary Two South American polyphagous leaf beetles,Diabrotica speciosa andCerotoma arcuata, selectively accumulated the bitter tasting compound 23,24-dihydrocucurbitacin D in their body after ingesting root tissues of cucurbit plants. Similarly, three Asian Cucurbitaceae-feeding specialists in the genusAulacophora were found to sequester the same compound. Cucurbitacin analogs were shown to deter feeding by a bird predator, indicating an allomonal role for these compounds in cucurbitacin-associated chrysomelid leaf beetles both of New and Old Worlds. The strong affinity to cucurbitacins, selective sequestration of the analogs and consequent protection from predators suggested an ecological adaptation mechanism developed in common among these two geographically isolated subtribes in the Luperini. 相似文献

Summary. The harvestman Mitopus morio (Phalangidae) is
a generalist predator. It is known to prey on larvae of the
chrysomelid leaf beetle Oreina cacaliae defended by plant
acquired pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Tracer feeding
experiments were performed to determine how harvestmen
tolerate protoxic PAs. Minced meat containing either
[14C]senecionine or [14C]senecionine N-oxide was fed to
M. morio and subsequently feces and bodies were analyzed.
Labeled alkaloid N-oxide remained stable and was eliminated
almost unaltered with the feces; only 10% was recovered
as tertiary PA. In contrast, approximately 80% of
labeled tertiary alkaloid (senecionine) ingested with the diet
was N-oxidized and eliminated; the remaining 20% consisted
of unchanged senecionine and a polar metabolite
of unknown structure. Harvestmen process their diet by
excreting digestive juice, indicated by bleaching of the meat
color. Analysis of the processed diet revealed some N-oxidation
of [14C]senecionine, suggesting the gut as the site of Noxidation.
Analysis of the bodies of harvestmen 80 hours
after the tracer feeding pulse revealed only trace amounts of
the polar metabolite. Neither senecionine nor its N-oxide
could be detected in the body extracts. The results are discussed
in relation to the strategies of PA adapted insects to
avoid accumulation of tertiary PAs in living tissues. 相似文献

Division of labor between undertaker specialists and other middle-aged workers in honey bee colonies

A primary determinant of colony organization in temporally polyethic insect societies is inter-individual variation in behavior
that is independent of worker age. We examined behavioral repertoires, behavioral correlates of adult development, and spatial
distributions within the hive to explore the mechanisms that produce behavioral variation among middle-age honey bees (Apis mellifera). Individually labeled undertakers, guards, food storers, and wax workers exhibited a broad range of task-related behavior,
but bees tagged as undertakers were more likely to subsequently remove a corpse from the hive and handle a corpse compared
to other middle-aged bees. The activity level of undertakers was similar to other task groups, suggesting that undertaking
specialists were neither hyper-active “elites” nor quiescent “reserves” that become active only when a dead bee stimulus is
present. Undertakers also were more likely to remove debris and to remain in the lower region of the hive or near the entrance,
even when not engaged in corpse removal; both preferences may promote colony efficiency by reducing inter-task travel times.
Guards and undertakers were less likely to perform behavior normally associated with young bees compared to food storers and
wax workers. Undertakers and guards also initiated foraging at earlier ages than the other task groups. These results suggest
that undertakers and guards may be slightly developmentally advanced compared to food storers and wax workers. There also
was evidence for lifetime differences in behavioral preferences which could not be explained by differences in adult development.
Bees tagged as undertakers were more likely to subsequently remove a dead bee during their entire pre-foraging career compared
to other task groups or members of their general age cohort. Differences in both the rate of adult development and individual
behavioral preferences, both of which may be subject to genetic and environmental influences, are important determinants of
inter-individual variation among honey bees of middle age.

Summary Parasites of social insect workers can be transmitted within the colony to other, related host individuals or, alternatively, to unrelated workers of other colonies. Division of labour affects the probability of transmission, as young individuals often work inside the nest whereas older ones often leave the nest to forage. Therefore, the relative probabilities of transmission within-vs. between-nests is also affected by the delay between host infection and the shedding of propagules, i.e. the latent period of the parasite strain. We therefore hypothesized that strains of the flagellate parasite Crithidia bombi (Trypanosomatidae, Zoomastigophorea) infecting workers of the bumble bee Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera, Apidae) could differ in their delays and coexist in a population. This would be the case if strains that are shed after a short time delay were more efficiently transmitted to other colony members, whereas strains with long delays were more efficiently transmitted to non-related workers in the population. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally varying time delay and by allowing transmission to either sister workers from the same nest or unrelated workers from other nests. Transmission of C. bombi was measured as the number of parasitic cells shed by the exposed workers after a standard period. The results showed that relatedness as such had no effect, but that delay and nest identity were highly significant effects to explain variation in transmission success. There was a significant interaction between nest identity and delay, such that bees of some colonies acted as efficient transmitters for C. bombi under short delays and vice versa. We discuss how division of labour may affect parasitism in social insects and, vice versa, how division of labour may be under selection from the effects of parasitism, using available evidence from the literature.

Summary Adults of forty-five aposematic insect species from four orders, and/or, in eight cases, their early stages, were examined for the presence of 2-methoxy-3-alkylpyrazines by coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The survey also included eight cryptic and related species and six unrelated mimics, twelve selected hostplants of those herbivores that had proved positive for such pyrazines, and nine well known toxic plants. Positive results were as follows: aposematic adult species, 26 (58 %); obscurely coloured species, 1 (12.5%); mimics, 2 (33%); host-plants, 5 (42%); well-known toxic plants, 4 (44%). Among the taxonomic groups, these pyrazines were found in the lepidopteran families and subfamilies Papilionidae, Danainae, Heliconiinae, Acraeinae, Zygaenidae and Arctiidae, and among the Coleoptera, in the Lycidae, Cantharidae, Endomychidae, Coccinellidae, Oedemeridae and Meloidae. Single cases of the occurrence of these pyrazines were also detected in the Hemiptera (Cercopidae) and Orthoptera (Pyrgomorphidae). Mimics were found with and without the pyrazines. Among the plants they were detected in Aristolochiaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Asteraceae, Papaveraceae, Passifloraceae, Solanaceae and Urticaceae. Some aposematic and phytophagous insects apparently sequester pyrazines from their hostplants whereas others, particularly the predatory species, manufacture these substancesde novo. Summary. The occurrence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) in Pittocaulon (ex Senecio) praecox (Asteraceae) a species endemic to Mexico was established. The aboveground plant organs contain the 1,2-saturated monoester
7-angeloyl-dihydroxyheliotridane together with a small proportion of its 9-angeloyl isomer as major alkaloid. The monoesters
are accompanied by the macrocyclic otonecine derivative senkirkine. Roots contain only related macrocyclic PAs with senecionine,
senkirkine and platyphylline as major components; monoesters are absent. The broom-like succulent stems of P. praecox are infested by the scale insect Ceroplastes albolineatus conspicuously visible by its huge wax cover. All life-history stages, i.e. females, eggs, first instar nymphs (crawlers)
and the wax cover were found associated with PAs. The measured PA concentrations clearly indicate sequestration. The highest
PA concentrations (mg / g dry weight) reached are: mature females, 0.44; eggs, 0.58; crawlers, 0.37; wax cover, 0.08. The
host plant as well as in the infesting scale insect contain the PAs exclusively as free bases. As a phloem-feeder C. albolineatus must acquire the PAs with the ingested phloem sap. This appears plausible since in Senecio species PA are transmitted and circulated through the phloem path. It is suggested that PAs may protect particularly the
crawlers as the most endangered stage in the life-cycle of the scale insect. 相似文献

The bootstrap resampling method is used to help with the intercomparison of air transport models. Time-by-time analysis of variance and follow up simultaneous comparisons are proposed which do not rely on distributional assumptions for the predictions of the models and which allow errors to be postulated in the observed values of the phenomena under investigation.
