Climate change is a key threat to biodiversity. To conserve species under climate change, ecologists and conservation scientists suggest 2 main conservation strategies regarding land use: supporting species’ range shifts to enable it to follow its climatic requirements by creating migration pathways, such as corridors and stepping stones, and conserving climate refugia (i.e., existing habitat areas that are somewhat buffered from climate change). The policy instruments that could be used to implement these conservation strategies have yet to be evaluated comprehensively from an economic perspective. The economic analyses of environmental policy instruments are often based on ecological effectiveness and cost-effectiveness criteria. We adapted these general criteria to evaluate policy instruments for species’ conservation under climate change and applied them to a conceptual analysis of land purchases, offsets, and conservation payments. Depending on whether the strategy supporting species’ range shifts or conserving climate refugia is selected, the evaluation of the policy instruments differed substantially. For example, to ensure ecological effectiveness, habitat persistence over time was especially important for climate refugia and was best achieved by a land-purchase policy instrument. In contrast, for the strategy supporting range shifts to be ecologically effective, a high degree of flexibility in the location of conserved sites was required to ensure that new habitat sites can be created in the species’ new range. Ecological thresholds are abrupt changes of ecological state. While an ecological threshold is a widely accepted concept, most empirical methods detect them in time or across geographic space. Although useful, these approaches do not quantify the direct drivers of threshold response. Causal understanding of thresholds detected empirically requires their investigation in a multi-factor domain containing the direct drivers (often referred to as state space). Here, we present an approach to quantify thresholds from response surfaces modeled empirically in state space. We present two indices of shape attributes measured from response surfaces. The response surfaces are built using a regression method in state space. The indices are threshold strength (T) and diagonality (D). We use 48 simulated response surfaces of different shapes to test the efficacy of the indices in 3D. Our results show that T is sensitive to the steepness of the transition from one state to the next, with various forms of abrupt, centralized thresholds yielding the highest values among the simulated surfaces. D represents the orientation of the response surface or the simultaneous influence of more than one predictor in eliciting the response gradient. Strongly diagonal surfaces have the most diagonal surface area demonstrated by sharply undulating diagonal surfaces. Given that the success of T and D requires a regression method to accurately capture any shape of complex data structure, we also test the accuracy of empirical regression methods known to be tractable with complex data. We test classification and regression trees (CART), Random Forest, and non-parametric multiplicative regression (NPMR) for binary and continuous responses. We use the 48 simulated response surfaces to test the methods, and we find that prediction accuracy depends on both the T and D of the simulated data for each method. We choose the most accurate method among those we test for capturing any shape of response surface from real data, NPMR. Finally, we use NPMR to build response surfaces and quantify T and D from real ecological data sets. During modern birds history, climatic and environmental conditions have evolved on wide scales. In a continuously changing
world, landbirds annual migrations emerged and developed. However, models accounting for the origins of these avian migrations
were formulated with static ecogeographic perspectives. Here I reviewed Cenozoic paleoclimatic and paleontological data relative
to the palearctic–paleotropical long distance (LD) migration system. This led to propose a new model for the origin of LD
migrations, the ‘shifting home’ model (SHM). It is based on a dynamic perspective of climate evolution and may apply to the
origins of most modern migrations. Non-migrant tropical African bird taxa were present at European latitudes during most of
the Cenozoic. Their distribution limits shifted progressively toward modern tropical latitudes during periods of global cooling
and increasing seasonality. In parallel, decreasing winter temperatures in the western Palearctic drove shifts of population
winter ranges toward the equator. I propose that this induced the emergence of most short distance migrations, and in turn
LD migrations. This model reconciliates ecologically tropical ancestry of most LD migrants with predominant winter range shifts,
in accordance with requirements for heritable homing. In addition, it is more parsimonious than other non-exclusive models.
Greater intrinsic plasticity of winter ranges implied by the SHM is supported by recently observed impacts of the present
global warming on migrating birds. This may induce particular threats to some LD migrants. The ancestral, breeding homes of
LD migrants were not ‘northern’ or ‘southern’ but shifted across high and middle latitudes while migrations emerged through
winter range shifts themselves.
