The effect of particle density on the turbulent open-channel flow carrying dilute particle suspensions is investigated using
two specific gravities and three concentrations of solid particles. The particles, identical in size and similar in shape,
were natural sand and a neutrally buoyant plastic. The particles were fully suspended, and formed no particle streaks on the
channel’s bed. Accordingly, the changes in the flow are attributed to the interactions between suspended particles and flow
turbulence structures. Measurements were obtained by means of image velocimetry enabling simultaneous, but distinct, measurement
of liquid and particle velocities. The experimental results show that, irrespective of particle specific gravity, particle
suspension influences bulk velocity of flow and the Kármán coefficient, while friction velocity essentially remains constant.
The results also show that particles in suspension modify local water turbulence over the flow depth, but in ways not accurately
predicted using the customary parameters for characterizing turbulence modification. 相似文献
A new analytical method using accelerated solvent extraction was developed for the determination of 10 particle-associated polar and semipolar pesticides. In addition, six deuterated analogues of the target compounds were evaluated as internal standards. The method yielded acceptable accuracy (73–103% recovery) and precision (<25% relative standard deviation) for eight compounds. Using size exclusion chromatography (SEC) as cleanup step resulted in higher recoveries compared to solid phase extraction (SPE) cleanup.
Deuterated standards with 10 or more deuterium atoms performed well as internal standards concerning similar recovery and correlation with the target analytes.
The method was employed to extract particle-associated pesticides from 16 streams located in an area with intense agriculture in France. Acetochlor, pirimicarb, tebuconazole, fenpropidin, -endosulfan and chlorfenvinphos were detected at concentrations up to 1 mg kg−1 dry weight. A comparison with aquatic toxicity data indicated potential risk to the benthic fauna exposed to these concentrations of pirimicarb, -endosulfan and chlorfenvinphos.
We suggest that the method presented here be used for the extraction and quantitation of particle-associated polar pesticides. 相似文献
Spatial and temporal patterns of metal mobilisation from former water-powered, Pb working sites in a suburban area of Sheffield (UK) were investigated. Twelve time-integrated mass flux samplers were strategically deployed over two contrasting campaign periods (summer and winter). Suspended sediment samples were characterised magnetically and subjected to metal analysis. Metal levels in the upper River Sheaf showed a marked spatial and temporal variability. Pb concentrations in particular were relatively high (maximum 2132 mg kg(-1)). Their distribution tended to reflect the historical contamination of the valley by 17th to 19th century industry, especially during summer high discharge conditions. The mean suspended sediment Pb concentration (803 mg kg(-1)) exceeds contamination guidelines. It is unclear whether ground remediation of one of the seven floodplain sites in the catchment has been successful. The river is still affected by the legacy of at least two other Pb working sites. 相似文献
