This paper is a summary and elaboration of an earlier publication in Dutch on the compilation of a landscape-ecological map,
scale 1 : 50 000, of the Dutch coast. It is argued that such an integrated map is the best basis for the conservation and
management of the coastal dunes and salt marshes. It may be combined with local more detailed vegetation maps, some examples
of which are mentioned in the context of management.
The Dutch North Sea coast is a ca. 350 km long chain of sandy beaches and sand dunes, from only 100 m to more than 10 km wide.
On sheltered stretches of dune coasts along estuaries in the Southwest and on the Wadden Sea islands, salt marshes have developed.
The small-scale gradient structure of the beach-dune-salt marsh complex is emphasized. 相似文献

Conservation efforts are increasingly supported by ecosystem service assessments. These assessments depend on complex multi-disciplinary methods, and rely on a number of assumptions which reduce complexity. If assumptions are ambiguous or inadequate, misconceptions and misinterpretations may arise when interpreting results of assessments. An interdisciplinary understanding of assumptions in ecosystem service science is needed to provide consistent conservation recommendations. Here, we synthesise and elaborate on 12 prevalent types of assumptions in ecosystem service assessments. These comprise conceptual and ethical foundations of the ecosystem service concept, assumptions on data collection, indication, mapping, and modelling, on socio-economic valuation and value aggregation, as well as about using assessment results for decision-making. We recommend future assessments to increase transparency about assumptions, and to test and validate them and their potential consequences on assessment reliability. Ammonia emissions (NH3) are characterised by a high spatial variability at a local scale. When modelling the spatial distribution of NH3 emissions, it is important to provide robust emission estimates, since the model output is used to assess potential environmental impacts, e.g. exceedance of critical loads. The aim of this study was to provide a new, updated spatial NH3 emission inventory for the UK for the year 2000, based on an improved modelling approach and the use of updated input datasets. The AENEID model distributes NH3 emissions from a range of agricultural activities, such as grazing and housing of livestock, storage and spreading of manures, and fertilizer application, at a 1-km grid resolution over the most suitable landcover types. The results of the emission calculation for the year 2000 are analysed and the methodology is compared with a previous spatial emission inventory for 1996. 相似文献

Missouri ranks second in cow-calf numbers in the United States and its pastureland has experienced invasion of various plant
species. As one of the invasive weeds, sericea lespedeza is becoming a serious threat to pasturelands in this state. The in-situ
field survey in these vast pastures is time consuming and often impossible because of accessibility. Typical aerial survey
is also difficult to detect sericea because the plant is of similar size and color as natural grass and, thus, cannot be effectively
discriminated in broadband aerial color photos. This study used an airborne hyperspectral image to map sericea and its invasiveness
in a public grass field in Mid-Missouri. The maximal 1st-order derivative in red-near infrared region (650–800nm) was derived
to separate sericea from fescue, the dominant grass in pastures in Missouri. With a simple threshold approach, sericea of
various sizes were identified in the study area. It was also found that the maximal 1st-order derivatives of sericea patches
were log-linearly related to sericea “volume,” a quasi 3-dimensional biophysical variable as an approximate measure of sericea
invasiveness. The squared correlation coefficient (r
2) of the regression was 0.65 and the estimation error of sericea “volume” estimation was 11% based on ground measurements
at 27 sample sites. With this empirical regression model, the quantitative distribution of sericea volume was mapped, which
could serve as a first step in alerting landowners and the general public about the seriousness of sericea invasion in Missouri

The extent of wetland in New Zealand has decreased by approximately 90% since European settlement began in 1840. Remaining
wetlands continue to be threatened by drainage, weeds, and pest invasion. This article presents a rapid method for broad-scale
mapping and prioritising palustrine and estuarine wetlands for conservation. Classes of wetland (lacustrine, estuarine, riverine,
marine, and palustrine) were mapped using Landsat ETM+ imagery and centre-points of palustrine and estuarine sites as ancillary
data. The results shown are for the Manawatu–Wanganui region, which was found to have 3060 ha of palustrine and 250 ha of
estuarine wetlands. To set conservation priorities, landscape indicators were computed from a land-cover map and a digital
terrain model. Four global indicators were used (representativeness, area, surrounding naturalness, and connectivity), and
each was assigned a value to score wetland sites in the region. The final score is an additive function that weights the relative
importance of each indicator (i.e., multicriteria decision analysis). The whole process of mapping and ranking wetlands in
the Manawatu–Wanganui region took only 6 weeks. The rapid methodology means that consistent wetland inventories and ranking
can now actually be produced at reasonable cost, and conservation resources may therefore be better targeted. With complete
inventories and priority lists of wetlands, managers will be able to plan for conservation without having to wait for the
collection of detailed biologic information, which may now also be prioritised. 相似文献

In spatial planning and environmental management, maps are found very helpful in many situations, but in other situations they may also deepen conflicts or be ignored. This paper addresses the question what explains such phenomena, with particular emphasis on, and reference to, collaborative policymaking settings in the Netherlands. We have elaborated the concept of 'frames' and 'framing' to structure and analyze the function of maps in the context of deliberative policymaking. With help of discourse analysis, a method adopted from the policy sciences, we have observed ongoing multi-actor processes and focused on discussions around maps in several case studies. From the observations of both the maps themselves and the discussions and actions with the maps, we have interpreted the meaning and frames represented 'in' the map images, as well as the various perspectives of actors 'on' the collaborative use of the map. We have conceptualized three fundamentally different perspectives or frames on the function of maps in the decision-making process. The cross-frame debate over maps is illustrated with the recollection of one particular map-making example. We conclude that the conflicts observed in a number of case studies can be adequately explained with help of the three identified frames, and provide some recommendations for the profession of mapping. 相似文献

Side-scan sonar and underwater video camera records as well as dredging samples were used to map the bottom morphology and biocoenoses in the Taranto seas. A 1:20,000 scale chart has been produced with all the data recorded. Most of the study area consists of biocoenoses affected by the anthropogenic activities of the town of Taranto. Some native broadly tolerant species seem to benefit from these activities and become increasingly dominant. Environmental modifications also seem to favour the settlement of exotic species. 相似文献

Groundwater contamination by agricultural chemicals is a major environmental pollution issue nation-wide. The regulatory agencies of towns and counties face the problem of finding a methodology for assessing the ground-water contamination potential of a large number of agricultural pesticides. Because of the spatial nature of the problem and the limited data availability for comprehensive pesticide movement models, a contamination potential index was employed for preliminary assessment. A specially designed geographic information system was used to create ground-water contamination likelihood maps for a 1500 km2 area. The results suggest that this methodology can be used successfully for evaluating the relative contamination potential of a large number of pesticides over large areas with limited input data. A tentative approach for using this method for monitoring and registration of pesticides is also discussed. 相似文献

This is part one of a two-part discussion, in which we will provide an overview of the use of aerial photography, topographic mapping and photogrammetry in environmental enforcement actions. The visualization of spatial relationships of natural and man-made features can focus the scope of environmental investigation, and provide a simple, yet quantitative, historical record of changes in conditions on a site. Aerial photography has been used in environmental remote sensing since the early part of the 20th century. Aerial photos are valuable tools for environmental assessment because they provide objective, detailed documentation of surface conditions at a specific time. Furthermore, they can generally be obtained even in cases where access on the ground is denied to investigators. From aerial photos, precise quantitative information can be collected using photogrammetry. Such measurement and positional data can be produced in digital format for input into a Geographic Information System (GIS) for computerized analysis and display. Other information derived from aerial photographs requires specialized photointerpretive skills and experience. These include the recognition of vegetation mortality, oil-spill damage, and the ecological quality of water bodies. The location, extent and historical change of hazardous waste sites can be documented on topographic maps. These maps are often created from aerial photographs, and display the extent and location of real-world features by symbolizing them. The major advantage of maps over aerial photos is that maps can show things that are not visible from the air, while omitting unnecessary and distracting information. Because maps are derived products, they may contain bias in content and presentation, and they must be backed up by careful documentation and quality assurance protocols. 相似文献
