TIM (Threat Identification Model) is a framework for the ex ante assessment of agricultural land management sustainability at the land unit scale that identifies sources of unsustainability within agricultural land management systems. The model explicitly links defined hazards to land productivity and environmental integrity, land resource data and information, and land management practice options using expert and local knowledge on land management and its potential effects. The model was tested in the Crystal Creek Subcatchment, a narrow coastal strip of land situated in north Queensland, Australia. This area was chosen due to the expansion of the sugar industry onto increasingly marginal land in the area, which represents a threat to sustainable land use and a requirement for careful land-use planning and land management.TIM may be used in a relational database as a stand alone decision support system for land-management planning. Its usefulness in land-use planning is greatest when it is linked to a Geographic Information System (GIS) as shown in this paper. GIS allows TIM outputs, such as constraints to agriculture and site-specific best-management practices, to be identified in a spatially explicit manner.The main advantages of TIM are that it can be done ex ante, it removes the need to define sustainability assessment criteria and indicators, it utilises current understanding of the causes and effects of land degradation and how different land-management practices influence these, and links this knowledge to definite land-management options. 相似文献

Summary Present municipal waste management paradigms in Brazil do not allow for flexible approaches to solving an extremely dynamic
problem. This paper discusses the basic flaws in present thinking models of residents and municipal administrators. Fundamental
arguments presented on municipal solid waste relate to nomenclature, destinations, definitions, logistics, social dynamics,
social assistance programs, education and employment philosophies. In each case, the consequences of the stalemate are explained
in terms of the unsustainable situation of constantly growing landfills. In sequence, a proactive thinking model is presented
and explained that has the potential of drastically reducing landfill size. It is called Municipal Transit Material Processing.
The model has been tested successfully in small communities and is now available for scale-up. The landfill diversion achieved
stands at 62% of household waste in comparison with 15% theoretically possible in Brazil with selective collection models.
Although of necessity the arguments apply directly to Brazil, the basic ideas behind the reasoning may be extrapolated to
other Southern countries. The following simple example will illustrate to the reader the type of paradigm inversion the paper
proposes to convey. The classical political slogan in Brazil is “get children out of garbage dumps”. The inversion proposed

The paper presents a novel transdisciplinary approach to investigate non-sustainable civilisation–nature interactions in the context of global change. The approach rests on the decomposition of intricate dynamics of Global Change into problematic patterns civilisation nature interactions (‘syndromes’) this is done by an iterative process of observations, data and theoretical system analysis and GIS-based modelling attempts. These syndromes of global change characterise endangering and risky developments of civilisation nature interaction and represent a baseline for measuring and indicating ‘non-sustainability’; in order to have a sustainable development it is necessary to have a far-reaching absence of syndromes. They encompass the core problems of global change, e.g. soil degradation, climate change, threats to biodiversity or global deforestation. Patterns are defined as characteristic constellations of global change trends (‘symptoms’). Cause–effect schemes of symptoms and their interrelations are constituted as complex phenomena resulting from interactions over the different spheres of the Earth system (biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, population, pedosphere, economy, psychosocial sphere, social organisation, science and technology). The approach is illustrated by an analysis of civilisation–nature interaction patterns relevant for global deforestation. Global forest ecosystems have been chosen for this investigation because of their important role in the global carbon cycle and their importance for biological diversity. The resulting geographical patchwork of the combined dispositions and intensities of the different syndromes describes current and future regional threats to forests by their underlying global cause–effect patterns of civilisation–nature interaction. 相似文献

This study examines sustainability indicators using the sustainability report of the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as the case study. The report is a compilation of indicators designed to assess the sustainability of natural resource management. The interviews with the users revealed, however, that the indicators have not been particularly effective in informing the actors or in affecting their behaviour. Clearly, the informative value of the indicators has been overrated and the complexity of the information transfer has been underestimated. At least partly, the difficulties were due to the obscurity of the indicator-concept itself and consequently to their improper use. First, the statistics with the objective state-of-affairs information should be distinguished from the indicators that are always related to policy discussion. In addition, the technical and communicative use of the indicators should be distinguished from each other as they have different relationship between the information, policy values and the associated activities. 相似文献

Global environmental changes coupled with socioeconomic changes are major challenges to food security. Changes in climate affect most food crops, particularly in countries that rely on agriculture for subsistence. The article proposes a model to analyze food stability in the context of climate change. Genetic improvement, agrobiodiversity, sustainable intensification, climate monitoring, and market monitoring were considered key perspectives for the balanced scorecard to achieve stability in food production. The set of perspectives and indicators were validated by 185 experts, which supported the creation of a balanced scorecard map to assist decision‐making. Therefore, the model could serve as an addition to FAO's approach to food security, driving actions related to global food policy. From the accelerated process of global urbanization, themes that permeate the socio-environmental context of cities, echo as strong practical aspects to be debated and studied, for example, aspects of urban policies connected with governance. In this sense, this research seeks to answer the following question: to what extent do urban policies, together with the triad environmental, social, and governance (ESG), articulate and promote a sustainable production of urban spaces? The objective was to explore the existing gaps in the interrelationship of urban policies and governance through the perspective of sustainable production of urban spaces, seeking evidence in theoretical and practical ways. The methodology uses bibliometric techniques to systematically review the integration of documents specified in methodological treatment, first by establishing key search words, and sequentially defining the databases that could provide the necessary data for the systematic reflections of the research, narrowed to a period between the years 2017 and 2021 and through Scopus and Web of Science databases. Our research provides evidence that urban policies, connected with the execution of governance, become important both for the promotion of ecological balance and for the environmental maintenance of cities, striving for their preservation and at times restoration and revitalization, thus enabling the proposal to establish urban policies in connection with ESG. 相似文献

Mining is essentially a destructive developmental activity, where ecology suffers at the altar of economy. Unfortunately, in most regions of the Earth, the underground geological resources are superimposed by biological resources (forests). This is particularly evident in India. Hence mining operations necessarily involve deforestation, habitat destruction, biodiversity erosion and destruction of geological records which contain information about past biodiversity. Extraction and the processing of ores and minerals also lead to widespread environmental pollution.However, mankind cannot afford to give up the underground geological resources which are the basic raw materials for development. An unspoiled nature can provide ecological security to people but cannot bring economic prosperity. Scientific mining operations accompanied by ecological restoration and regeneration of mined wastelands and judicious use of geological resources, with search for eco-friendly substitutes and alternatives must provide the answer.A case study from the Bijolia quarrying area in Rajasthan, India, provides some sensational revelations of the impact of mining on the human ecosystem. 相似文献
