Geographic information systems (GIS) use is presented in the problem of sitting areas for construction of natural systems such as stabilization ponds (SPs) for domestic wastewater treatment. For this purpose, several variables, such as topography, land use, type of geological formation, distance to major rivers or lakes, distance to existing cities and villages, existence of environmentally protected areas, mean minimum monthly temperatures and required wastewater effluent characteristics were analyzed with the GIS, in order to accept or reject a particular area within a region. The method is applied in the region of Thrace (Northeast Greece) at the municipal level. The required area for SP systems was calculated in each of the 36 municipalities of Thrace (including two islands, Thassos and Samothraki) as a function of the population of each municipality, temperature and local wastewater effluent discharge criteria. Based on the GIS analysis, suitable locations were identified in each municipality first, and then the total required surface area of these systems was compared to the available surface area of each municipality, in order to decide whether SP systems could be a viable solution to the wastewater management problem in the particular region. In that way the present methodology offers a fast and simple method to check the suitability of new areas for construction of such systems. 相似文献
Both modelling and field data from three breeding seasons show that an environmental factor, clutch loss (CL), affects the operational sex ratio (OSR) and therefore male mating frequency in strawberry poison frogs. Clutch loss affects the length of reproductive cycles of both sexes: with increasing clutch losses, males spend proportionately more time than females in parental investment activities. Because of this, males spend relatively less time in the mating pool, i.e. exhibit proportionately more time-out than females in comparison to a situation with low or no clutch loss. Hence, clutch loss leads to a less male-biased OSR, coupled with a decrease in the opportunity for sexual selection. Furthermore, this study resolves an apparent paradox, the negative correlation between mating frequency and reproductive success (=number of produced tadpoles) of individual males in one breeding season. Clutch loss decouples the correlation between mating frequency and reproductive success because females re-enter the mating pool when they lose their offspring. However, clutch loss diminishes the reproductive output. Similar consequences of clutch loss on the OSR may be true for many species where both sexes reproduce frequently in one breeding season.Communicated by J. Christensen-Dalsgaard 相似文献
Summary. In the natural habitat of Papilio polytes, a
Rutaceae feeder utilizing Toddalia asiatica as a major host plant, some other rutaceous plants such as
Murraya paniculata
(abundant) and Glycosmis citrifolia (relatively rare)
occur sympatrically as potential hosts. Whereas
G. citrifolia
is occasionally infested in the field, M. paniculata
remains entirely unexploited by the butterfly. We thus examined the
phytochemical mechanisms that can explain the differential
acceptance of the two plants by ovipositing females of
P. polytes. The foliage of
G. citrifolia was found to readily
induce oviposition and females deposited eggs in response
to a methanolic extract of the plant. Stimulatory activity-directed
fractionation of the extract revealed the presence of
two characteristic compounds, trans-4-hydroxy-N-methylproline
and 2-C-methylerythronic acid, known to serve as
oviposition stimulants for the butterfly. In addition, larvae
performed as well or better onG. citrifolia
as on T. asiatica.
Similar examination of the inhibitory chemical constituents
of M. paniculata led to the isolation of an oviposition deterrent. The compound, identified as trigonelline
(N-methylpyridine-
3-carboxylic acid), exhibited moderate
oviposition deterrency to females. These results combined
with our previous data are in agreement with the observed
differential utilization of the two plants by
P. polytes in the field. 相似文献
ABSTRACT: Southeast Asian nations with extensive water management systems have numerous candidate and ongoing programs and projects. They cannot possibly all be funded and implemented simultaneously in any serious way. Choices must be made. But how to select? What criteria can assist with the screening in an acceptable manner, particularly in the near absence of useful technical and economic information across them all. This paper suggests a methodology by which assessment criteria can be constructed which conforms to any given national information base and development needs. Criteria can be weighted one against the other in their relative importance. For each criterion a ranking scale puts the “best” (most, highest) at one end and the “worst” (least, lowest) at the other. Each candidate project is then subjected to these consistent assessment methods for a weighted “score.” Key criteria normally have surrogate measures depending on information available. Criteria are of three sorts: sheer volume, e.g., of a specific use, a benefit; ratios and relations, e.g., A as percent of B; and other more subjective criteria, e.g., regional or income distribution impacts. The basic criteria include, for example, time to full benefits (minimize), OM & R as percent of investment (minimize), and permanent rural jobs created (maximize). 相似文献
Objective: The adaptive behavior of mobile phone–distracted drivers has been a topic of much discussion in the recent literature. Both simulator and naturalistic studies suggest that distracted drivers generally select lower driving speeds; however, speed adaptation is not observed among all drivers, and the mechanisms of speed selection are not well understood. The aim of this research was to apply a driver behavioral adaptation model to investigate the speed adaptation of mobile phone–distracted drivers.
Methods: The speed selection behavior of drivers was observed in 3 phone conditions including baseline (no conversation) and hands-free and handheld phone conversations in a high-fidelity driving simulator. Speed adaptation in each phone condition was modeled as a function of secondary task demand and self-reported personal/psychological characteristics with a system of seemingly unrelated equations (SURE) accounting for potential correlations due to repeated measures experiment design.
Results: Speed adaptation is similar between hands-free and handheld phone conditions, but the predictors of speed adaptation vary across the phone conditions. Though perceived workload of secondary task demand, self-efficacy, attitude toward safety, and driver demographics were significant predictors of speed adaptation in the handheld condition, drivers' familiarity with the hands-free interface, attitude toward safety, and sensation seeking were significant predictors in the hands-free condition. Drivers who reported more positive safety attitudes selected lower driving speeds while using phones.
Conclusion: This research confirmed that behavioral adaptation models are suitable for explaining speed adaptation of mobile phone distracted drivers, and future research could be focused on further theoretical refinement. 相似文献
