The in utero course of the anemic fetus has improved dramatically, owing to early diagnosis and cordocentesis transfusion. In utero invasive procedures such as amnio- and cordocentesis have become important modalities in the evaluation and treatment of anemic fetuses. However, they carry risks for both the mother and fetus. A valid and sensitive noninvasive means of following the anemic fetus is the evaluation of changes in the middle cerebral artery peak systolic flow velocity (MCA-PSV). This is a sensitive tool for both the evaluation of fetal anemia and response to treatment. Intracerebral vessels respond earliest to the fetal anemic state, and are readily accessible for ultrasound examination. We describe the methodology and evolving clinical applications of MCA-PSV measurement in the fetus, through an overview of the literature describing the development and application of MCA-PSV measurement in fetuses at risk of fetal anemia of various immune and nonimmune etiologies, illustrated by index cases from our center. MCA-PSV measurement is essential in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of cases of fetal anemia. The use of this modality lessens the need for invasive procedures. This study was aimed at improving our understanding of the physiology of the microorganisms that reductively dehalogenate tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA). Activity was followed in contaminated sediments from a polluted streambed as well as from fracture filling material underlying the stream. Reductive dehalogenation was observed in surface sediments but not in fracture filling samples from a depth of 3m. Likewise, anaerobic microbial activity, represented by sulphate reduction, was much higher in the surface sediment. In the culture enriched from the surface sediment, optimal microbial debromination of TBBPA took place at a salinity of 2% and 3% NaCl, temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, and pH of 7-8. Ethanol, pyruvate and the combination of hydrogen with acetate were the most suitable electron donors and carbon sources for this culture. Alternative electron acceptors like Fe(3+), SO(4)(2-), SO(3)(2-), NO(3)(-) and 2,4,6-tribromophenol inhibited TBBPA debromination. The debrominating bacteria were heat sensitive (80 degrees Celsius, for 10min) but were not inhibited by bromoethanesulphonate or molybdate. This study allowed optimisation of our culturing conditions, but was also important for understanding the factors which influence TBBPA debromination in situ.  相似文献

Metal concentrations were determined for groundwater suspended matter from a site in the coastal aquifer of Israel which has been irrigated with secondary sewage effluents since the 1960's. Suspended matter was collected from the aquifer saturated zone by pumping and by a multi-layer sampler. Fine sediments were collected from both the unsaturated and saturated zones of the contaminated aquifer, as well as from an adjacent uncontaminated environment. Ag, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were leached from the samples in three sequential chemical extractions which are taken to represent the carbonate, organic and oxide phases. Comparison of the aquifer samples to those of the adjacent environment showed that Fe and Mn are primarily enriched in non-mobile fine sediments and not in suspended matter, whereas the concentrations of Zu, Cu and Ag show up to an order of magnitude enrichment in the mobile suspended matter in groundwater. The enrichment of these metals in the suspended matter indicates that metals from sewage effluents and agricultural activities have reached the groundwater.  相似文献

Sorption capability of bedrock components from a fractured chalk province was evaluated using ametryn, phenanthrene, m-xylene, 2,4,6-tribromophenol, and 1,2-dichloroethane. Sorption isotherms for the four aromatic compounds were nonlinear on gray (unoxidized) chalk. Over the studied solution ranges, the distribution coefficient decreased by factor of 3 for phenanthrene and m-xylene, a factor 4 for ametryn, and by an order of magnitude for 2,4,6-tribromophenol. In contrast, 1,2-dichloroethane displayed a linear isotherm. The importance of polar interactions for ametryn sorption was evaluated by normalizing sorption to an "inert" solvent, n-hexane. n-Hexane-normalized sorption of ametryn was much greater than that of phenanthrene, presumably due to ametryn participation in hydrogen bonding interactions. In sharp contrast to sorption to gray chalk, sorption to white (oxidized) chalk is 100- to 1000-fold lower at any given solution concentration. The much greater sorption on gray chalk cannot be explained by specific surface area, clay content, or organic matter content; thus, the nature of the organic matter is considered to control sorption in the chalk samples. Gray chalk sorption capacity estimates for ametryn and 2,4,6-tribromophenol are similar, which, together with evidence of competition for sorption sites, suggests that the limited capacity sorption domain for both compounds is similar.  相似文献

The use of greywater for irrigation is becoming increasingly common. However, raw greywater is often contaminated and can cause environmental harm and pose health risks. Nevertheless, it is often used without any significant pretreatment, a practice mistakenly considered safe. The aim of this study was to develop an economically sound, low-tech and easily maintainable treatment system that would allow safe and sustainable use of greywater for landscape irrigation in small communities and households. The system is based on a combination of vertical flow constructed wetland with water recycling and trickling filter, and is termed recycled vertical flow constructed wetland (RVFCW). The RVFCW's properties, removal efficiency, hydraulic parameters and feasibility were studied, as well as the environmental effects of the treated greywater, as reflected by soil and plant parameters over time. The RVFCW was efficient at removing virtually all of the suspended solids and biological oxygen demand, and about 80% of the chemical oxygen demand after 8h. Fecal coliforms dropped by three to four orders of magnitude from their initial concentration after 8h, but this was not always enough to meet current regulations for unlimited irrigation. The treated greywater had no significant negative impact on plants or soil during the study period. The feasibility analysis indicated a return over investment after approximately three years. We concluded that the RVFCW is a sustainable and promising treatment system for greywater use that can be run and maintained by unskilled operators.  相似文献
