By using an original framework involving complementary statistical approaches, we investigated the environmental attitudes of 6379 pre-service and in-service teachers in 16 countries of Europe and its neighbourhood. To test hypotheses about the nature of environmental attitudes, we examined the variation across groups of individuals (between-class analysis), investigated the independent effects of several candidate explanatory factors (orthogonal analysis), and finally inspected potential relationships between conceptions on a variety of topics (co-inertia analysis).  相似文献

Bioprocesses, such as biofiltration, are commonly used to treat industrial effluents containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations. Nevertheless, the use of biofiltration for indoor air pollution (IAP) treatment requires adjustments depending on specific indoor environments. Therefore, this study focuses on the convenience of a hybrid biological process for IAP treatment. A biofiltration reactor using a green waste compost was combined with an adsorption column filled with activated carbon (AC). This system treated a toluene-micropolluted effluent (concentration between 17 and 52 µg/m3), exhibiting concentration peaks close to 733 µg/m3 for a few hours per day. High removal efficiency was obtained despite changes in toluene inlet load (from 4.2 × 10?3 to 0.20 g/m3/hr), which proves the hybrid system’s effectiveness. In fact, during unexpected concentration changes, the efficiency of the biofilter is greatly decreased, but the adsorption column maintains the high efficiency of the entire process (removal efficiency [RE] close to 100%). Moreover, the adsorption column after biofiltration is able to deal with the problem of the emission of particles and/or microorganisms from the biofilter.
ImplicationsIndoor air pollution is nowadays recognized as a major environmental and health issue. This original study investigates the performance of a hybrid biological process combining a biofilter and an adsorption column for removal of indoor VOCs, specifically toluene.  相似文献

Mesotrione is a benzoylcyclohexane-1,3-dione herbicide that inhibits 4-hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase in target plants. Although it has been used since 2000, only a limited number of degrading microorganisms have been reported. Mesotrione-degrading bacteria were selected among strains isolated from Brazilian aquatic environments, located near corn fields treated with this herbicide. Pantoea ananatis was found to rapidly and completely degrade mesotrione. Mesotrione did not serve as a sole C, N, or S source for growth of P. ananatis, and mesotrione catabolism required glucose supplementation to minimal media. LC-MS/MS analyses indicated that mesotrione degradation produced intermediates other than 2-amino-4-methylsulfonyl benzoic acid or 4-methylsulfonyl-2-nitrobenzoic acid, two metabolites previously identified in a mesotrione-degrading Bacillus strain. Since P. ananatis rapidly degraded mesotrione, this strain might be useful for bioremediation purposes.  相似文献

Characterizing spatial patterns due to ecological processes is a major issue for analysing and predicting species distributions. Grasping the non-linear nature of population dynamics over networks of discrete suitable sites is here central, as very specific signatures are expected. In the line of promising results from Fourier analysis of metapopulation maps, we found distance-based eigenvector maps (DBEM) to help disentangle the respective signatures of habitat and metapopulation structuring, with the great advantage of being applicable to irregular sampling schemes, a common feature of ecological surveys. A smoothing procedure was required to obtain the distinguishable signatures, and this may be a critical issue for investigating non-contingent and reliable patterns in spatial ecology.  相似文献

Neutral models provide an alternative to niche-based assembly rules of ecological communities by assuming that communities’ properties are shaped by the stochastic interplay between ecological drift, migration and speciation. The recent and ongoing interest about neutral assumptions has produced many developments on the theoretical side, with nevertheless limited echoes in terms of analyses of real-world data. The present review paper aims to help bridge the widening gap between modellers and field ecologists through two objectives. First, to provide a multi-criteria typology of the main neutral models, including those from population genetics that have not yet been transposed to ecology, by considering how the fundamental processes of ecological drift, speciation and migration are modelled and, specifically, how space is taken into account. Second, to review methods recently proposed to estimate models parameters from field data, a point that should be mastered to allow for broader applications.  相似文献

Tapered element oscillating microbalances equipped with sample equilibration system (TEOM-SES) used by the province of Ontario for the ambient monitoring of PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 µm) in its air quality index (AQI) network were collocated with the Synchronized Hybrid Ambient Real-time Particulate monitor (SHARP 5030) at two monitoring sites for a period spanning approximately 2 years to determine the similarities and differences between the measurement outputs of both instrumental systems. Due mainly to mass loss observed with the TEOM-SES in cooler months, the province has recently switched its PM2.5 instrumentation at all stations in its monitoring network from the TEOM-SES to the SHARP 5030, which has the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Federal Equivalent Method (FEM) Class III designation. Thus, it has become imperative to develop corrections for historical and future TEOM measurements for the purpose of making them more agreeable to the new FEM method. This work details the authors’ multiple linear regression analyses (MLRAs) of particulate matter data from both instrumental monitors, with the inclusion of operational parameters of physicochemical relevance for both cases of transformations of historical TEOM and TEOM measurements to be made in the future. For historical TEOM data, it was observed that the transformations only benefited winter and fall months. Furthermore, comparisons of the transformed historical TEOM data with PM2.5 concentrations determined from the Federal Reference Method (FRM) sampler at seven locations within the province showed marked improvements over the observed TEOM-FRM comparisons.

Implications:This work provides a path to correcting the historically observed underreporting of particulate mass in winter and fall in Ontario by making the TEOM-based continuous data resemble the new FEM outputs (in this case, more SHARP-like). It is possible that the transformation of mainly winter TEOM data as detailed in this work may potentially lead to revisions in historical annual composite mean PM2.5 concentrations and total annual number of days PM2.5 exceeded the Canada-wide Standard (CWS) metric across the province.  相似文献

Bioreactor technology is a waste treatment concept consisting in speeding up the biodegradation of landfilled waste by optimizing its moisture content through leachate recirculation. The measurement of variations in waste moisture content is critical in the design and control of bioreactors. Conventional methods such as direct physical sampling of waste reach their limits due to the interference with the waste matrix. This paper reviews geophysical measurements such as electrical direct current and electromagnetic slingram methods for measuring the electrical conductivity. Electrical conductivity is a property, which is linked to both moisture and temperature and can provide useful indications on the biodegradation environment in the waste mass. The study reviews three site experiments: a first experimentation shows the advantages (correlation between conductive anomaly and water seepage) but also the limits of geophysical interpretation; the two other sites allow the leachate recirculation to be tracked by studying the relative resistivity variation versus time from electrical 2D imaging. Even if some improvements are necessary to consider geophysical measurements as a real bioreactor monitoring tool, results are promising and could lead to the use of electrical 2D imaging in bioreactor designing.  相似文献

The neutral theory of S. P. Hubbell postulates a two-scale hierarchical framework consisting of a metacommunity following the speciation-drift equilibrium characterized by the "biodiversity number" theta, and local communities following the migration-drift equilibrium characterized by the "migration rate" m (or the "fundamental dispersal number" I). While Etienne's sampling formula allows simultaneous estimation of theta and m from a single sample of a local community, its applicability to a network of (rather small) samples is questionable. We define here an alternative two-stage approach estimating theta from an adequate subset of the individuals sampled in the field (using Ewens' sampling formula) and m from community samples (using Etienne's sampling formula). We compare its results with the simultaneous estimation of theta and m (one-stage estimation), for simulated neutral samples and for 50 1-ha plots of evergreen forest in South India. The one-stage approach exhibits problems of bias and of poor differentiability between high-theta, low-m and low-theta, high-m solution domains. Conversely, the two-stage approach yielded reasonable estimates and is to be preferred when several small, scattered plots are available instead of a single large one.  相似文献

Data from a probability sample were used to estimate wetland and stream mitigation success from 2007 to 2009 across North Carolina (NC). “Success” was defined as whether the mitigation site met regulatory requirements in place at the time of construction. Analytical results were weighted by both component counts and mitigation size. Overall mitigation success (including preservation) was estimated at 74 % (SE = 3 %) for wetlands and 75 % (SE = 4 %) for streams in NC. Compared to the results of previous studies, wetland mitigation success rates had increased since the mid-1990s. Differences between mitigation providers (mitigation banks, NC Ecosystem Enhancement Program’s design-bid-build and full-delivery programs, NC Department of Transportation and private permittee-responsible mitigation) were generally not significant although permittee-responsible mitigation yielded higher success rates in certain circumstances. Both wetland and stream preservation showed high rates of success and the stream enhancement success rate was significantly higher than that of stream restoration. Additional statistically significant differences when mitigation size was considered included: (1) the Piedmont yielded a lower stream mitigation success rate than other areas of the state, and (2) recently constructed wetland mitigation projects demonstrated a lower success rate than those built prior to 2002. Opportunities for improvement exist in the areas of regulatory record-keeping, understanding the relationship between post-construction establishment and long-term ecological trajectories of stream and wetland restoration projects, incorporation of numeric ecological metrics into mitigation monitoring and success criteria, and adaptation of stream mitigation designs to achieve greater success in the Piedmont.  相似文献

In the last few years, several works dealing with Fenton oxidation of ionic liquids (ILs) have proved the capability of this technology for their degradation, achieving complete ILs removal and non-toxic effluents. Nevertheless, very little is known about the kinetics of this process, crucial for its potential application. In this work, the effect of several operating conditions, including reaction temperature (50–90 °C), catalyst load (10–50 mg L?1 Fe3+), initial IL concentration (100–2000 mg L?1), and hydrogen peroxide dose (10–200% of the stoichiometric amount for the complete IL mineralization) on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) oxidation has been investigated. Under the optimum operating conditions (T = 90 °C; [Fe3+]0 = 50 mg L?1; [H2O2]0 = 100% of the stoichiometric amount), the complete removal of [C4mim]Cl (1000 mg L?1) was achieved at 1.5-min reaction time. From the experimental results, a potential kinetic model capable to describe the removal of imidazolium-based ILs by Fenton oxidation has been developed. By fitting the proposed model to the experimental data, the orders of the reaction with respect to IL initial concentration, Fe3+ amount and H2O2 dose were found to be close to 1, with an apparent activation energy of 43.3 kJ mol?1. The model resulted in a reasonable fit within the wide range of operating conditions tested in this work.  相似文献
