Background, aim and scope
Agrochemicals could reach aquatic ecosystems and damage ecosystem functionality. Natural formicide could be an alternative to use in comparison with the more toxic formicides available on the market. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the ecotoxicity of the new natural formicide Macex? with a battery of classical aquatic ecotoxicity tests.Material and methods
Bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri), algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata), hydra (Hydra attenuata), daphnids (Daphnia magna), and fish (Danio rerio) tests were performed in accordance with international standardized methodologies. Results
In the range of formicide concentrations tested (0.03 to 2.0?g?L?1) EC50 values varied from 0.49 to >2.0?g?L?1, with P. subcapitata being the most sensitive species and H. attenuata and D. rerio the most tolerant species to this product in aqueous solutions. Conclusions
This new formicide preparation can be classed as a product of low toxicity compared to the aquatic ecotoxicity of the most common commercialized formicides. 相似文献3.

Civil engineering-related construction and demolition debris is an important source of waste disposed of in municipal solid waste landfills. After clay materials, gypsum waste is the second largest contributor to the residential construction waste stream. As demand for sustainable building practices grows, interest in recovering gypsum waste from construction and demolition debris is increasing, but there is a lack of standardized tests to evaluate the technical and environmental viability of this solid waste recycling process. By recycling gypsum waste, natural deposits of gypsum might be conserved and high amounts of the waste by-product could be reused in the civil construction industry. In this context, this paper investigates a physical property (i.e., resistance to axial compression), the chemical composition and the ecotoxicological potential of ceramic blocks constructed with different proportions of clay, cement and gypsum waste, and assesses the feasibility of using a minimal battery of tests to evaluate the viability of this recycling process. Consideration of the results for the resistance to axial compression tests together with production costs revealed that the best formulation was 35% of plastic clay, 35% of non-plastic clay, 10% of Portland cement and 20% of gypsum waste, which showed a mean resistance of 4.64 MPa. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry showed calcium and sulfur to be the main elements, while quartz, gypsum, ettringite and nacrite were the main crystalline compounds found in this formulation. Ecotoxicity tests showed that leachate from this formulation is weakly toxic toward daphnids and bacteria (EC20% = 69.0 and 75.0, respectively), while for algae and fish the leachate samples were not toxic at the EC50% level. Overall, these results show that the addition of 20% of gypsum waste to the ceramic blocks could provide a viable substitute for clay in the ceramics industry and the tests applied in this study proved to be a useful tool for the technical and environmental evaluation of this recycling process, bacterial and daphnid tests being more sensitive than algae and fish tests. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope
Assessment of environmental impacts from pesticide utilization should include genotoxicity studies, where the possible effects of mutagenic/genotoxic substances on individuals are assessed. In this study, the genotoxicity profile of the new formicide Macex® was evaluated with two genotoxicity tests, namely, the micronucleus test with mouse bone marrow and Vicia faba, and a mutagenicity test using the Ames Salmonella assay.Materials and methods
The bacterial reverse mutation test (Salmonella typhimurium strains TA97, TA98, TA100, TA102, and TA1535), the Vicia root tip and mouse micronucleus tests were conducted according to published protocols. Results
In the range of the formicide Macex® concentrations tested from 0.06 to 1.0 g?L?1 (or mgkg?1 in the mouse test), no genotoxicity was observed in the prokaryotic or eukaryotic test organisms. However, at Macex® concentrations of 0.5 g?L?1 and above a significant decrease in the mitotic index (P?≤?0.05) in the V. faba was observed. Micronucleus formation was likewise increased in the test organism at concentrations starting at 2.0 g?L?1.Conclusions
These data allow us to classify this natural formicide preparation as a product with no geno-environmental-impact when applied at recommended concentrations.5.

River or alluvial sand mining is causing a variety of environmental problems in the Itajaí-açú river basin in Santa Catarina State (south of Brazil). When this type of commercial activity degrades areas around rivers, environmental restoration programs need to be executed. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the evolution of a restored riparian forest based on data on the soil microbial activity and plant biomass growth. A reference site and three sites with soil degradation were studied over a 3-year period. Five campaigns were performed to determine the hydrolysis of the soil enzyme fluorescein diacetate (FDA), and the biomass productivity was determined at the end of the studied period. The variation in the enzyme activity for the different campaigns at each site was low, but this parameter did differ significantly according to the site. Well-managed sites showed the highest biomass productivity, and this, in turn, showed a strong positive correlation with soil enzyme activity. In conclusion, soil enzyme activity could form the basis for monitoring and the early prediction of the success of vegetal restoration programs, since responses at the higher level of biological organization take longer, inhibiting the assessment of the project within an acceptable time frame. 相似文献
