The Peng‐Robinson equation of state (PR EoS) for liquid‐vapor equilibrium is extended to model the solid‐vapor (sublimation) and solid‐liquid (melting) phase equilibria for carbon dioxide (CO2). The sublimation behavior is modeled through the re‐formulations of the empirically based analytical expressions for the two temperature dependent parameters, a and b in the PR EoS. The melting phase behavior on the other hand is modeled by the coupling of the original and the extended PR EoS and equalization of solid and liquid phase fugacities. Analytical expressions derived based on the extended PR EoS are used to determine thermodynamic and phase equilibrium derivative properties for solid/vapor CO2. These include internal energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, thermal expansion, and isothermal compressibility coefficients as well as the adiabatic speed of sound. In most cases good agreement with the available experimental data is obtained covering the pressure and temperature ranges 0.1–100 MPa and 100–300 K. A pressure/temperature phase equilibrium diagram for solid‐liquid‐vapor CO2 is constructed to demonstrate the overall performance and the limitations of the two EoS as compared to the experimental data spanning the triple point up to 100 MPa pressure. This paper reports a qualitative study of 54 police drivers who were interviewed about their views on police driver training, driving strategies and their accident involvement. Study of the transcribed interviews indicated that officers constructed narratives of themselves as being highly aware of hazards presented by other road users and they used a variety of discursive devices to minimise their own culpability and attribute risk elsewhere. Rather than maintaining a straightforward ‘illusion of invulnerability’ they were formulating a ‘topography of risk’ in which they were responding to hazards presented by suspects or other road users. Their meticulously detailed accounts of the circumstances surrounding accidents serve to place them as knowledgeable and impartial participants and create a sense of expertise and authority. Training initiatives could profitably seek to challenge this ‘topography of risk’ and sense of authority so that drivers more fully appreciate the hazard they may present to themselves and the public.  相似文献

Although the benefits of dam construction are numerous, particularly in the context of climate change and growing global demand for electricity, recent experience has shown that many dams have serious negative environmental, human, and political consequences. Despite an extensive literature documenting the benefits and costs of dams from a single disciplinary perspective, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the distribution of biophysical, socio-economic, and geopolitical implications of dams. To meet the simultaneous demands for water, energy, and environmental protection well into the future, a broader view of dams is needed. We thus propose a new tool for evaluating the relative costs and benefits of dam construction based on multi-objective planning techniques. The Integrative Dam Assessment Modeling (IDAM) tool is designed to integrate biophysical, socio-economic, and geopolitical perspectives into a single cost/benefit analysis of dam construction. Each of 27 different impacts of dam construction is evaluated both objectively (e.g., flood protection, as measured by RYI years) and subjectively (i.e., the valuation of said flood protection) by a team of decision-makers. By providing a visual representation of the various costs and benefits associated with two or more dams, the IDAM tool allows decision-makers to evaluate alternatives and to articulate priorities associated with a dam project, making the decision process about dams more informed and more transparent. For all of these reasons, we believe that the IDAM tool represents an important evolutionary step in dam evaluation.  相似文献

Adaptive cluster sampling can be a useful design for sampling rare and patchy populations. With this design the initial sample size is fixed but the size of the final sample (and total sampling effort) cannot be predicted prior to sampling. For some populations the final sample size can be quite variable depending on the level of patchiness. Restricted adaptive cluster sampling is a proposed modification where a limit is placed on the sample size prior to sampling and quadrats are selected sequentially for the initial sample size. As a result there is less variation in the final sample size and the total sampling effort can be predicted with some certainty, which is impor- tant for many ecological studies. Estimates of density are biased with the restricted design but under some circumstances the bias can be estimated well by bootstrapping. © Rapid Science 1998  相似文献

Results of intermittent monitoring of six aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, m-xylene, p-xylene and o-xylene), carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen over a thirteen year period at a site in central London (Exhibition Road) are presented. Four monitoring regimes were undertaken; namely, 1979, 1982/83, 1986/87 and 1991/92. The summertime daytime mean ambient concentrations of the measured parameters at this site are presented. The reported concentrations show a reduction from 1979 to 1992 by approximately a factor of two, despite national increases in motor fuel consumption and the volume of traffic. Relevant European Community legislation covering emissions from motor-vehicles are outlined and comparisons are made with emissions from motor vehicles predicted from the UK national inventory. The importance of the frequency of measurements was also noted.  相似文献

The marine pseudomonad bacterium PL1 contains an intracellular pool of free amino acids which consist mainly of glutamate with small amounts of glutamine and aspartate when grown in a nutrient medium containing 0.2 M NaCl. When the NaCl concentration of the growth medium is increased to 0.8 M, proline becomes a major component of the intracellular pool together with glutamate—at this molarity and under suitable nutrient conditions these amino acids comprise 20% of total bacterial amino acid nitrogen. When grown in a nutrient growth medium containing a constant level of NaCl, the intracellular pool size can vary by a factor of 4 depending on the concentration of carbon and nitrogen in the medium. Experiments show that the amino acid pool can act as a nitrogen reserve but has little function as a carbon reserve. At high NaCl concentrations there is a marked dependence for growth on the presence of sufficient potassium in the medium. However, no correlation between K+ and glutamate concentration in either nitrogen or K+-limited cultures has been found. None of the enzymes associated with glutamate biosynthesis was influenced by NaCl levels between 0.2 and 0.5 M. Neither Na+ or K+ stimulated the activity of these enzymes when tested in vitro.  相似文献

The asymptotic behavior of a linear compartment model for the environmental movement of radionuclides is investigated. Here, the expression asymptotic behavior is used to designate the behavior of q(t) as t → ∞, where q is the solution of a vector differential equation of the form dq/dt = h + Kq. The asymptotic behavior of such equations is described. For the model and conditions under consideration, each element of q converges monotonically to a steady-state value. A hydrologic system is defined and used to illustrate this behavior. An approach to sensitivity analysis employing Latin hypercube sampling, rank transformations and stepwise regression is presented and then applied to this system. A total of 20 independent variables is introduced and the following dependent variables are investigated for the various components of the system: amount of radionuclide present at steady state. concentration of radionuclide at steady state, and time required to reach 90% of steady state. Finally, an application of asymptotic behavior in the analysis of a hypothetical site for the geologic isolation of high-level radioactive waste is described and a brief discussion of differential sensitivity analysis is given.  相似文献

A sample of 135 female human service professionals completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Staff Burnout Scale for Health Professionals (SBS), along with measures of job satisfaction, role stress, self-esteem, alienation, and locus of control. Principal components factor analysis of this battery indicates considerable covariation of self-reported burnout with job dissatisfaction and perceived role stress, and moderate overlap with more general feelings of alienation and low self-esteem. Item factor analysis of the 22 MBI items resulted in two independent factors, one defined by the Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization items, the other by the Personal Accomplishment items. Item factoring of the SBS produced one large factor which was highly correlated with the MBI exhaustion-depersonalization factor. Implications of these findings for the construct validity of the MBI and SBS are discussed.  相似文献
