Sexual violence is an epidemic that often overlaps with the AIDS pandemic and is often a cause and consequence of the spread of HIV/AIDS amongst women and girls. Presently, half or more of the 40 million people infected with HIV in the world are women. Millions of those infected are aged 15-24 years and have suffered some form of intimate partner violence. This group accounts for half of all new infections. In sub-Saharan Africa, young women account for 75% of HIV infections and are approximately two-and-a-half times more likely to be infected than young men of the same age (UNAIDS, Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic: 4th Global Report, Geneva, 2004). What makes women, especially girls and younger women, so disproportionately vulnerable to HIV infection, and why have current AIDS control efforts in sub-Saharan Africa largely failed to stem the epidemic in this gender?  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the ameliorative effect of vitamin C on chlorpyrifos-induced sensorimotor changes involving postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch in Wistar rats. Forty adult Wistar rats of either sex were divided into 4 groups of 10 animals in each group. Group I was administered soya oil (2?mL?kg?1) while group II was given vitamin C (100?mg?kg?1); group III was dosed with chlorpyrifos (10.6?mg?kg?1, i.e. ~1/8th of the LD50); group IV was administered vitamin C (100?mg?kg?1) and then exposed to chlorpyrifos (10.6?mg?kg?1), 30?min later. The regimens were administered by gavage once daily for a period of 17 weeks. Neurobehavioral parameters involving postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch responses measured at various intervals revealed a deficit in postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch responses in the CPF group, which was mitigated by vitamin C pretreatment. The neuronal and glial cell degeneration, increased brain malonaldehyde concentration, and decrease in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and acetylcholinesterase activities recorded in the group given chlorpyrifos were ameliorated by vitamin C. Therefore, vitamin C was shown to mitigate chlorpyrifos-induced sensorimotor deficits partly due to its antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase restoration properties.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper critically examines how privatisation and liberalisation of electricity provision is reconstructing energy consumption practices. The paper discusses the commercial restructuring of the electricity industry in the UK over the last four years, illustrating how a reconfiguration of production and consumption interests is transforming the utility marketplace: differentiating the value of resource units, distinguishing between infrastructure suppliers and stratifying utility customers. This process is shown to be resulting in differential forms of service provision as utility companies actively engage with more lucrative customers, presenting opportunities for environmental innovation, while disengaging from unprofitable customers and heightening social polarisation.  相似文献

Kinetics of glucose and amino acid uptake by attached and free-living bacteria were compared in the upper 70 m of the oligotrophic north-western Mediterranean Sea. Potential uptake rates of amino acids were higher than those of glucose in all the samples analysed. Cell-specific potential uptake rates of attached bacteria were up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of total bacteria, both for amino acids and glucose (0.72–153 amol amino acids cell−1 h−1 and 0.05–58.42 amol glucose cell−1 h−1 for attached bacteria and 0.34–1.37 amol amino acids cell−1 h−1 and 0.07–0.22 amol glucose cell−1 h−1 for total bacteria). The apparent K m values were also higher in attached bacteria than in total bacteria, both for amino acids and glucose. These results would reflect the presence of different uptake systems in attached and free-living bacteria, which is in accordance with the different nutrient characteristics of their microenvironments, ambient water and particles. Attached bacteria show transport systems with low affinity, which characterise a bacterial community adapted to high concentration of substrates. The present study evaluated the beneficial effect of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) on subacute chlorpyrifos (CPF)-induced alterations in serum lipid profiles and some biomarkers of oxidative stress in Wistar rats. Twenty-eight adult male rats divided into four groups of seven animals each (group I–IV) were used: I (S/oil) received soya oil (2 ml kg?1), II (ALC) received ALC (300 mg kg?1); III (CPF) received CPF (8.5 mg kg?1 ~ 1/10th LD50); IV (ALC+CPF) was pretreated with ALC (300 mg kg?1) and then exposed to CPF (8.5 mg kg?1), 30 min later. The treatment was orally for 28 days duration. Sera obtained from blood samples were evaluated for the levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The levels of low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-c), and atherogenic index (AI) were calculated. The result showed that elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL-c, VLDL-c, AI, and MDA, and the decreased levels of HDL-c, CAT, and SOD induced by CPF were modulated by ALC. It was concluded that ALC ameliorated the alterations in serum lipid and oxidative stress induced by CPF exposure in the rats, partly through its antioxidant properties.  相似文献
