Emulsified oils have been used to stimulate anaerobic bioremediation at hundreds of sites contaminated with chlorinated solvents, perchlorate, heavy metals, and nitrate. A simple spreadsheet‐based tool has been developed to assist in the design of injection‐only systems for distributing emulsified oils in barriers and area treatments. This tool allows users to quickly compare the relative costs and performance of different injection alternatives and identify a design that is best suited to site‐specific conditions. Contact efficiency is estimated using results of prior numerical model simulations and dimensionless scaling factors that relate the volume of oil and water injected to treatment‐zone dimensions. Sensitivity analysis results indicate that maximum oil retention is one of the most important factors controlling system performance and cost. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using permanganate (MnO(4)(-)) can be a very effective technique for remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents. However, many ISCO projects are less effective than desired because of poor delivery of the chemical reagents to the treatment zone. In this work, the numerical model RT3D was modified and applied to evaluate the effect of aquifer characteristics and injection system design on contact and treatment efficiency. MnO(4)(-) consumption was simulated assuming the natural oxidant demand (NOD) is composed of a fraction that reacts instantaneously and a fraction that slowly reacts following a 2nd order relationship where NOD consumption rate increases with increasing MnO(4)(-) concentration. MnO(4)(-) consumption by the contaminant was simulated as an instantaneous reaction. Simulation results indicate that the mass of permanganate and volume of water injected has the greatest impact on aquifer contact efficiency and contaminant treatment efficiency. Several small injection events are not expected to increase contact efficiency compared to a single large injection event, and can increase the amount of un-reacted MnO(4)(-) released down-gradient. High groundwater flow velocities can increase the fraction of aquifer contacted. Initial contaminant concentration and contaminant retardation factor have only a minor impact on volume contact efficiency. Aquifer heterogeneity can have both positive and negative impacts on remediation system performance, depending on the injection system design. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: A three well injection-production test was performed at the United Creosoting Company (UCC) site in Conroe, Texas, to estimate the effective in situ retardation factors for adsorption and to evaluate the significance of biotransformation in limiting the transport of polycydic aromatics present in the shallow aquifer. The field test was also used as a model to determine if this type of testing would be feasible at other hazardous waste sites. During the test, chloride, a non-reactive tracer and two organic compounds, naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene (pDCB), were injected into a center well for 24 hours followed by clean ground water for six days. Ground water was continuously produced from two adjoining wells and monitored to observe the breakthrough of these compounds. Data from the test were analyzed by comparing the statistical moments of the chloride and organics distributions. Retardation factors for naphthalene and pDCB were estimated to be 1.03 and 0.97 by comparison of the statistical moments. A significant loss of naphthalene and pDCB was also observed during the three well test, apparently due to biotransformation. These results suggest that biotransformation is the major process limiting the transport of naphthalene and similar compounds at the UCC site. 相似文献

A review of the chemical ecology of the Cerambycidae (Coleoptera) 总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Summary. This review summarizes the literature related to
the chemical ecology of the Cerambycidae and provides a
brief overview of cerambycid biology, ecology, economic
significance, and management. Beetles in the family
Cerambycidae have assumed increasing prominence as pests
of forest and shade trees, shrubs, and raw wood products, and
as vectors of tree diseases. Exotic species associated with
solid wood packing materials have been notable tree killers
in North American urban and peri-urban forests. In forested
ecosystems native species respond to disturbances such as
fires and windstorms, and initiate the biodeterioration of
woody tissue. Eggs are laid by females, on or through the
bark surface of stem and branch tissue of moribund, recently
killed or decomposing woody plants; larval cerambycids
(roundheaded woodborers) typically feed in the phloem and
later in the xylem. Females will also, in some cases, select
living hosts, e.g. adult conifer and angiosperm trees, for
oviposition. Research on the chemical ecology of over 70
species has revealed many examples of attractive kairomones
(such as floral volatiles, smoke volatiles, trunk and leaf
volatiles, and bark beetle pheromones), repellents and
deterrents, oviposition stimulants, short- and long-range sex
pheromones, and defensive substances. Emerging generalities
are that attractants tend to be monoterpenoids and phenolic
esters; oviposition stimulants are monoterpenoids and
flavanoids; short-range sex pheromones are female-produced,
methyl-branched cuticular hydrocarbons; and
long-range sex pheromones are male-produced -hydroxy
ketones and (,)-diols ranging in length from 6 to 10 carbons.
The latter compounds appear to originate from glands
in the male thorax; putative defensive substances originate
from metasternal secretory pores or mandibular glands. In
one unusual case, a flightless, subterranean female that
attacks sugar cane produces a sex pheromone that is derived
from the amino acid isoleucine. With significantly more than
35,000 species of Cerambycidae worldwide, these generalities
will be subject to change as more species are examined.

Summary. Using Porapak Q traps, we collected the bark volatiles of six angiosperm trees native to British Columbia: black cottonwood,
Populus trichocarpa Torr. & A. Gray (Salicaceae), trembling aspen, P. tremuloides Michx. (Salicaceae), paper birch, Betula papyrifera Marsh. (Betulaceae), bigleaf maple, Acer macrophyllum Pursh (Aceraceae), red alder, Alnus rubra Bong. (Betulaceae), and Sitka alder, A. viridis ssp. sinuata (Regel) á. L?ve & D. L?ve (Betulaceae). Utilising coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection analysis, the
captured volatiles were assayed for antennal responses in five species of coniferophagous bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae),
sympatric with most or all of the angiosperm trees: the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, the mountain pine beetle, D. ponderosae Hopkins, the spruce beetle, D. rufipennis (Kirby), the western balsam bark beetle, Dryocoetes confusus Swaine, and the pine engraver, Ips pini (Say). The identities of 25 antennally-active compounds were determined by coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectroscopic
analysis, and co-chromatographic comparisons with authentic chemicals. The compounds identified were: hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, 1-hexanol, heptanal, α-pinene, frontalin, benzaldehyde, β-pinene, 2-hydroxycyclohexanone, 3-carene, limonene,
β-phellandrene, benzyl alcohol, (E)-ocimene, salicylaldehyde, conophthorin, guaiacol, nonanal, methyl salicylate, 4-allylanisole, decanal, thymol methyl ether,
(E)-nerolidol, and dendrolasin. A number of these compounds are known semiochemicals that are active in the behaviour of other
organisms, including bark beetles, suggesting a high degree of semiochemical parsimony. Antennally-active compounds ranged
from seven in A. viridis to 17 in P. trichocarpa. The fewest number of compounds (9) were detected by I. pini and the largest number (24) were detected by D. pseudotsugae. Six compounds excited the antennae of all five species of bark beetles. The large number of antennally-active compounds
detected in common by numerous bark beetles and present in common in numerous nonhost trees supports the hypothesis of olfaction-based
recognition and avoidance of nonhost angiosperm trees during the process of host selection by coniferophagous bark beetles.
