The biosorption characteristics of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution using Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. biomass were investigated. The biosorption efficiency of Cu(II) onto biomass was significantly influenced by the operating parameters. The maximum biosorption efficiency of L. pulmonaria was 65.3% at 10 mg/L initial metal concentration for 5 g/L lichen biomass dosage. The biosorption of Cu(II) ions onto biomass fits the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. The thermodynamic parameters indicate the feasibility and exothermic and spontaneous nature of the biosorption. The effective desorption achieved with HCl was 96%. Information on the nature of possible interactions between the functional groups of the L. pulmonaria biomass and Cu(II) ions was obtained via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the carboxyl (–COOH) and hydroxyl (–OH) groups of the biomass were mainly involved in the biosorption of Cu(II) onto L. pulmonaria biomass. The L. pulmonaria is a promising biosorbent for Cu(II) ions because of its availability, low cost, and high metal biosorption and desorption capacities.

Implications: Lobaria pulmonaria is a promising biosorbent for Cu(II) ions because of its availability, low cost, and high metal biosorption and desorption capacities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on the biosorption Cu by L. pulmonaria.  相似文献

Country-scale phosphorus balancing as a base for resources conservation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In order to effectively conserve the non-renewable resource phosphorus (P), flows and stocks of P must be known at national, regional and global scales. P is a key non-renewable resource because its use as fertilizer cannot be substituted posing a constraint on the global food production in the long-term. This paper presents a methodology to establish country-wide P balances that emphasises resource use. We develop a material flow analysis (MFA) model that comprises all relevant flows and stocks of P in five subsystems, seven processes and 36 material flows. For quantification, statistical data from economic and agricultural sources as well as available information about P partitioning in natural and anthropogenic processes are used. Special attention is paid to data gaps and uncertainties. The model was tested in two case studies on P management in Turkey and Austria. MFA appears to be a tool well suited for establishing country-wide P balances, provided that national statistics are well-structured and accessible. If a common approach is used for modelling P-flows and stocks, regional and national balances can be compared and linked towards larger scale P balances for an improved management of the resource.  相似文献

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that could grow on modified Postgate C medium (PC) containing chromium(VI) were isolated from industrial wastewaters and their chromium(VI) reduction capacities were investigated as a function of changes in the initial pH values, chromium, sulfate, NaCl and reactive dye concentrations. The optimum pH value at 50 mg l(-1) initial chromium(VI) concentration was determined to be 8. Chromium(VI) reduction by SRB was investigated at 22.7-98.4 mg l(-1) initial chromium(VI) concentrations. At the end of the experiments, the mixed cultures of SRB were found to reduce within 2-6 days more than 99% of the initial chromium(VI) levels, which ranged from 22.7 to 74.9 mg l(-1). The effects of the initial 0-9.0 g l(-1) concentrations of disodium sulfate and 0-6% (w/v) concentrations of NaCI to chromium reduction showed that the lowest concentrations of sulfate and NaCI were the best for chromium reduction in the PC medium including 50 mg l(-1) chromium(VI). Chromium(VI) reduction in 50 mg l(-1) and 25-100 mg l(-1) Remazol Blue, Reactive Black B or Reactive Red RB containing media were also investigated. In the experiments, 25-30% of the initial dye concentrations and 95% of the chromium(VI) was removed from the medium at the end of 72-h and 24-h incubation periods, respectively.  相似文献

Investigation of various aspects of the ecological problems of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has grown and continues to grow with remarkable intensity. However, it appears that certain areas of PCBs research are developed further than the others. For example, chemical and physical behavior and synthesis of PCBs are well studied, while the metabolism of PCBs and other routes of degradation, including toxicological significance and environmental impact, continue to challenge the scientists.In this paper, the chemical and physical properties of PCBs as well as the implications of these properties for the behavior of PCBs in ecological systems are discussed. The effect of PCBs on interrelated ecological systems are described. The distribution and fate of PCBs in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, and transport of PCBs through these systems are discussed. The toxic significance, biological accumulation and ecological magnification are described at various trophic levels.  相似文献

The use of biological responses to contaminant exposure by lichen species has become a useful tool in environmental quality evaluation and risk assesment. Lichen Hypogymnia physodes and Usnea hirta samples were collected in 2006 from 10 sites around iron-steel factory in Karabük, Turkey. H. physodes and U. hirta samples from Yenice forest were used as a control. The aim of present study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation ability and to determine the environmental impact of an iron-steel factory in Karabük. Seven elements (Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, Ni, Cr and Cd) were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The analytical results were compared statistically by using SPSS. As expected, the study area (Yenice forest, Karabük) chosen as control site (site no 11) showed significantly lower impact in comparison to other site (site no 1-10). Compared with the two lichen species, H. physodes showed highest metal accumulating capacity while U. hirta showed lowest. These criteria attested the best suitability for H. physodes, followed by U. hirta.  相似文献

This study investigates the empirical relationship between energy consumption, international trade, and real income in Canada which has an important role in global energy and trade. It employs bound tests to level relationships and conditional error correction models through ARDL specification to a new version of the Solow Growth model. Using annual data of the 1960–2010 period, results reveal a long-term relationship between energy consumption, international trade, and real income in Canada. It is also found that energy exporting activity is the determinant (driver) of energy consumption through the channel of real income and energy consumption is the determinant (driver) of exports through the channel of real income in the long term of the Canadian economy. Exports and energy use are the determinants (drivers) of real income in the long term of the Canadian economy; therefore, as conditional Granger causality tests suggest there is feedback relationship between energy consumption, international trade, and real income in the long term of the Canadian economy. The present study suggests that any energy conservation policies are likely to have negative influence on output and international trade in Canada.  相似文献

The management of uranium recovery operations, such as mill production, tailings, heep leaching or solution mining (in-situ mining), has been one of the most challenging issues facing environmental engineers and scientists in the last decade. Almost any activity (mill production, evaporative and holding ponds, storage sites of chemicals, tailings ponds and transportation) results in radioactive and toxic chemicals contamination of surface and groundwaters. Current estimates based on observations of plant operations indicate that 70–80% of the water used in mill production is lost by seepage and 10–20% by evaporation. This large quantity of seepage raises serious questions as to the degree of migration of radioactive and potentially toxic chemical species from the tailings pond and their impact on the surrounding surface and subsurface environments.This paper discusses the major radioactive and toxic chemicals involved in the uranium recovery operations and presents computer simulation results of their hydrodynamic dispersion, migration and prediction of future material movements.  相似文献

A mathematical model is developed for the population dynamics and survival probabilities of zooplankton in lake and estuarine. Basic digital computer simulation methodology is used for systematic application of the mathematical model for analysis of the population dynamics of zooplankton. In the analysis of this theoretical modelling, attention is focused on the production and destruction processes of the animal. Both processes are assumed stationary. The birth (production) rate is constant and life-span distribution is independent of time. It is also assumed that the different zooplankton species are independent and share a common aquatic ecosystem, and what happens to one of them does not influence the fate of any other in this system.  相似文献
