Specific polymeric material applications as bioactive molecules delivery systems involve a strictly controlled degradation of polymer matrixes. One possibility to obtain a zero-order kinetic for small molecules release consists in a simple hydrolysis of ester groups contained in the macromolecular structure. The chemical degradation can lead to the continuous surface erosion of the formulated resins without loss of their mechanical properties and to a permanent activity of the delivery systems. Hydrolysis is a very well-known reaction in the case of organic molecules containing ester groups. The mechanism seems to be more complicated when ester groups are located in macromolecular structures. With the aim of antifouling applications, acrylic acid polymers bearing lateral ester groups of different chemical structures (hydrophilic, hydrophobic, hydrolyzable) have been prepared, characterized, and immersed in water, at pH 8, and their hydrolysis has been studied. Experimental data display two parameters, at least, which must be taken into account: the reactivity of the ester groups toward hydrolysis and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the polymer. The susceptibility of the acrylic polymers to hydrolysis has been compared to the erosion characteristics of the corresponding films. The results confirm that hydrolysis is necessary to obtain a regular degradation of the films without loss of mechanical properties. A relationship has been observed between the characteristics of hydrolysis and erosion for each studied polymer.  相似文献

Measures of fish abundance, assemblage composition and length were compared when sampled by baited remote underwater stereo-video (stereo BRUV) and diver-operated stereo-video transects (stereo DOV) at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands and Ningaloo Reef. Species richness counts were 40% higher on stereo BRUV than stereo DOV. Stereo BRUVs also recorded a greater number of large-bodied targeted species in higher abundance than stereo DOV (e.g. Lethrinus nebulosus, Plectropomus leopardus) at the Houtman Abrolhos and at Ningaloo Reef. Many non-targeted species were also recorded in greater abundances on stereo BRUV than stereo DOV (e.g. Coris auricularis, Gymnothorax spp). Stereo DOV transects recorded a greater abundance of some small-bodied Pomacentridae, Labridae and Scaridae species than did stereo BRUV, particularly at Ningaloo Reef. This study demonstrates that choice of sampling technique for surveys of reef fish can lead to very different biological interpretations of fish assemblage structure.  相似文献

Activated carbon (AC) has recently been shown to be effective in sequestering persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from aquatic sediments. Most studies have demonstrated significant reductions of POP concentrations in water and in aquatic organisms; however, limited data exist on the possibility of using AC to immobilize remaining POPs at terrestrial contaminated sites. Under greenhouse conditions, pumpkin ssp cv. Howden) were grown, and red wiggler worms () were exposed to an industrial contaminated soil containing a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), i.e., Aroclors 1254 and 1260) treated with one of four concentrations of AC (0.2, 0.8, 3.1, and 12.5%) for 2 mo. The addition of AC to contaminated soils virtually eliminated the bioavailability of PCBs to the plant and invertebrate species. There were reductions in PCB concentrations of more than 67% in ssp and 95% in . These data suggest that AC could be included as part of comprehensive site closure strategy at PCB-contaminated sites.  相似文献

Ecologists are becoming increasingly interested in how variation in predator demographics influences prey communities. In northeastern New Zealand, the contrasting populations of previously exploited predators in highly protected marine reserves and fished areas have been used to investigate the effects of predation in soft-sediment habitats. However, these experiments have been unable to separate the role of predator size from that of density. This study provides evidence to support the model that foraging by different sizes of the rock lobster Jasus edwardsii affects soft-sediment bivalve populations in different ways. Feeding trials were conducted to investigate whether rock lobsters of different sizes vary in their choice of taxa and size of their bivalve prey. Trials with two morphologically similar species, Dosinia subrosea and Dosinia anus, indicated that lobsters of all sizes choose D. subrosea more frequently than the heavier shelled D. anus. Further results indicated that both large (>130 mm carapace length (CL)) and small (<100 mm CL) lobsters are capable of preying on a wide size range of D. subrosea (20–60 mm). However, small lobsters more frequently chose smaller shells (<30 mm) and large lobsters more frequently chose larger shells (>40 mm). Patterns in the abundance and size class distributions of these two bivalve species at protected and fished sites supported the feeding choices observed in the laboratory. These results suggest that populations of rock lobsters with large individuals inside reserves are capable of controlling the demography of bivalve populations in adjacent soft-sediment systems.  相似文献
