Summary Clutch size in the pipevine swallowtail of California (Battus philenor hirsuta) varies widely within and among two seasonal flights, early and late spring. Pilson and Rausher (1988) proposed that variation in clutch size in a Texan B. philenor population is due to assessment of host quality with subsequent adjustment of clutch size and to differences in motivational state. The assessment hypothesis and a nonexclusive alternative that clutch size is determined by mature egg load were tested for populations in Sacramento, California. Weak and sporadic correlations between host quality and clutch size were found, suggesting that host assessment with adjustment of clutch size is not a strong factor in this population. Clutch size was highly correlated to mature egg load in the early but not in the late spring flight. Yet, females from both flights had similar loads of mature eggs. It is proposed that females lay clutch sizes proportional to egg load, up to a maximum threshold. The threshold may be lowered in the late spring flight in response to changes in overall host quality or to increased egg predation, reducing both the mean clutch size and the correlation between clutch size and egg load. Potential mechanisms for the change in behavior among flights, based on changes in the threshold, are discussed. 相似文献

Temperature impacts many parameters that are critical to pipe corrosion including biological activity, physical properties of the solution, thermodynamic and physical properties of corrosion scale, and chemical rates. Abstract: In central Africa, where governments and funding agencies cover only a fraction of the recurrent expenditures needed to effectively manage the protected-areas network, it is essential to invest in the people who will be called on to participate in conservation efforts over the long term. In the Gamba Protected Areas Complex in southwestern Gabon, we analyzed the perseverance of all those who participated in training sessions, held since 1996, in ecological survey techniques and in participatory rural appraisal (socioeconomic studies). Of government agents who attended the respective training sessions, 7.7% continued ecological surveys and 0% continued participatory rural appraisal 2 years after training. However, 76.2% and 60.0% of the members of local communities who received training were still active in ecological surveys and participatory rural appraisal respectively after 2 years. Definitive conclusions regarding the participation of nongovernmental organization members cannot be drawn because of the low number of initial participants in the training programs. Based on our results, village collaborators seem to be a more "sustainable" human resource than government agents or of nongovernmental organizations members. Even though local communities cannot be solely responsible for managing protected areas, today's conservation professionals must acknowledge the strengths and limitations of village collaborators. Implementing a process involving the participation and the emulation of community members is a demanding task because protected-area managers must be based in the field to identify key individuals and to organize intensive training sessions. Also, constant support must be provided during the first years, and then the most capable and motivated collaborators will be able to pursue further training and work their way up through the ranks of the protected area's organizational structure. 相似文献

The current state of Mediterranean mountain areas has been driven by two main factors: intense traditional human activity
and the dynamics of the ecosystem itself. In this study, we examine land-cover changes in a National Park in the Pyrenees
mountains (NE Iberian Peninsula), which was designated a protected area 55 years ago. First, we have analyzed spatio-temporal
changes in land-cover pattern and forest dynamics from 1957 to 2005. During this period, land-cover dynamics consisted of
two main processes: (i) expansion of the forest area and (ii) increasing cover of forests already present in 1957. To analyze
the role of the conservation level of the park, we have also compared the results obtained within the park with those of unprotected,
peripheral areas. In the two areas with different protection level, dense forests increased throughout the period because
of the reduction in forestry activities. The peripheral area showed a higher rate of forest-cover change from 1957 to 2005
compared to the National Park. This higher increase in forest cover in the peripheral area could be related to a higher proportion
in the National Park of screes and rocky areas and to the decline and transformation of forest activities in these peripheral,

It is well known that arboreal ants, both territorially dominant species and plant ants (e.g., species associated with myrmecophytes or plants housing them in hollow structures), protect their host trees from defoliators. Nevertheless, the presence of an induced defense, suggested by the fact that the workers discovering a leaf wound recruit nestmates, is only known for plant ants. Based on the results from a field study, we show here (1) that colonies of Azteca chartifex, a territorially dominant, neotropical arboreal ant species, mostly selected Goupia glabra (Goupiaceae) trees in which to build their principal carton nests and (2) that plant signals induced workers to recruit nestmates, which patrol the leaves, likely providing the plant with a biotic defense. Furthermore, the number of recruited workers was clearly higher on G. glabra, their most frequently selected host tree species, than on other tree species. These results show that contrary to what was previously believed, induced responses are also found in territorially dominant arboreal ants and so are not limited to the specific associations between myrmecophytes and plant ants. 相似文献

The gray wolf is a large, highly mobile predator whose original geographic range included most of the Northern Hemisphere. High rates of genetic exchange probably characterized even distantly-separated populations in the past, but recent population declines and habitat fragmentation have isolated previously contiguous populations, especially in the Old World. We examine mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variability among twenty-six populations of wolves from throughout their geographic range. We find eighteen mtDNA genotypes in gray wolves, seven of these are derived from hybridization with coyotes, four are confined to the New World, six are confined to the Old World and one is shared by both areas. Genetic differentiation among wolf populations is significant but small in magnitude. In the Old World, most localities have a single unique genotype, whereas in the New World several genotypes occur at most localities and three of the five genotypes are nearly ubiquitous. The pattern of genetic differentiation in the gray wolf contrasts with that of another large, highly vagile canid, the coyote, in which genetic differentiation among populations is not significant even among widely separated localities. We suggest that the difference between these two species reflects the rapid, recent increase in coyote numbers and expansion of their geographic range, and the coincident decline in gray wolf populations. Apparent genetic differences among extant wolf populations may be a recent phenomenon reflecting population declines and habitat fragmentation rather than a long history of genetic isolation. 相似文献

Cathodic adsorptive stripping voltammetry is one of the most sensitive analytical methods for ultratrace analysis. The detection
limit is usually lower than 10−9 mol/L. Most adsorptive stripping procedures have been focused on the one ligand/one analyte approach. In order to reduce
analysis time and sample volume, the possibility of simultaneously determining several metals by cathodic stripping voltammetry
using a mixture of ligands was explored, e.g., by Colombo and van den Berg (1997). Here, we describe a new procedure for quantifying
chromium and copper using 2,2′-bipyridine and 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine). The effect of various operational parameters such
as buffer type, ligand concentration, potential and time collection were assessed and optimized. Possible interferences by
trace metals and organic matter were also investigated. Applicability for fresh water is illustrated.
