Application of appropriate environmentally conscious manufacturing strategies enables the sustainable development of products and processes. Automotive component manufacturers recognise the potential of applying appropriate strategies for attaining Triple Bottom Line benefits. In this context, three strategies such as eco-efficiency, waste minimisation and material efficiency are being applied to minimise environmental impacts associated with the manufacture of automotive products and its associated processes. A case study of an automotive component manufacturing firm has been exemplified. After conducting the study, the potential environmental impact was reduced by 20% and eco-efficiency was improved by 13%. Further, improvements have been observed in terms of overall resource consumption and material efficiency. The overall power consumption was reduced by 18% and weight of the component was reduced by 11%. The study aimed at improving the sustainable performance of product by incorporating green and environmentally friendlier manufacturing practices.

Soil heating has been proposed as a method to enhance the vapor extraction of NAPLs from contaminated soils. Three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer simulations have been performed for soil-heated vapor extraction to determine the transient system performance for a hypothetical configuration. Soil layering has been considered in evaluation of the initial non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) distribution and in evaporation and transport to the vapor extraction location. Results from this layered model are compared with results for a homogeneous system with an initially uniform NAPL, indicating the influence of layering, the initial NAPL distribution, the type of NAPL, and the possibility of enhanced vapor diffusion. Not only is the NAPL removal time reduced significantly with the addition of heat, but the uncertainty in the removal time owing to a number of difficult to characterize in situ factors, such as layering and the initial NAPL distribution, is much less than for standard soil vapor extraction without heating, owing to the rise in temperature and increase in NAPL vapor pressure with time. 相似文献

Synthetic hydrotalcite-like layered materials are known for their ability to remove anions, like the chromates. These sorbents usually exist in powder form, thereby exhibiting high surface area and rapid kinetics for adsorption, but presenting appreciable problems in the subsequent solid/liquid separation process. Almost complete removals were obtained in this paper, from batchwork dispersed-air flotation in presence of a flocculant. Due to the experienced difficulty of flotation of thermally activated (at 500 degrees C) hydrotalcite metal-loaded particles, the application of various surfactants was studied. Continuous-flow laboratory runs certified also the effectiveness of this combined process of sorptive flotation, a promising innovative treatment technology. 相似文献

In order to estimate risk to human populations from environmental pollutants, it is necessary to have sound data on the concentrations of chemicals of concern in the affected media and knowledge of exposures of critical population subgroups to these chemicals. The Southeast Ohio Study is developing systematic and scientifically defensible methods for obtaining data on environmental concentrations in various media in the vicinity of critical receptors. Nitrogen regeneration by two surf zone mysids,Mesopodopsis slabberi andGastrosaccus psammodytes, was determined under laboratory conditions. The mysids were collected from the lower Sundays River estuary, South Africa, from early spring 1984 to late summer 1985. The forms of nitrogen excreted and the effects of mass, temperature and feeding on excretion rate were determined for each species at three experimental temperatures. Comparison of the forms of nitrogen excreted revealed only slight differences between species, with ammonia the major form and urea and amino acids the secondary excretory products in both cases. Mass significantly influenced the rate of ammonia excretion at all experimental temperatures, with no significant difference in slope (common b=0.602) detected between species. During the day sediment deprivation resulted in a 15% and 20% increase in mean ammonia excretion rates of juvenile and adultG. psammodytes respectively, whereas no significant differences were found at night. The mean ammonia excretion rates of fedM. slabberi andG. psammodytes were 2 and 2.5 times higher than starved excretion rates, respectively.G. psammodytes andM. slabberi recycle 139 to 150 g N per running meter of surf zone per year and 1 007 to 1 208 g N m-1 yr-1, respectively. Concentrations of radionuclides were measured in soils from a grid of locations surrounding the US Department of Energy Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico and from a grid on a reference site approximately 20 km southeast of the WIPP site. Each of the two grids has 16 sampling locations (grid nodes) systematically distributed within an area of 16.580 ha. Sampling was conducted prior to the arrival of the first waste shipment at WIPP. Thus, the 137Cs and 23,240Pu in the soil are expected to have been deposited as global fallout, although the Gnome Site, 8.8 km southwest of the WIPP, is also a potential source of 239,240Pu and fission products. The reference grid has significantly higher concentrations of fallout and natural radionuclides than the WIPP grid. Up to 80% of the total variability in radionuclide concentrations across the two grids is attributable to differences between grid nodes. Differences between replicates within a location account for 44-50% of the variability in concentrations of the uranium isotopes, but only 11-17% of the variability in the concentrations of the other radionuclides. Samples having similar abundance of radionuclides were spatially aggregated across the terrain. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides were strongly correlated with the concentrations of Al and Pb, and with the percentages of sand, silt and clay in the soil. Normalizing radionuclide concentrations to the concentration of Al or percent fine particles can help adjust for differences in soil textures among samples and facilitate the detection of gradients or temporal changes in soil concentrations. 相似文献

The hypothesis was tested that predation-disturbance by epibenthic macrofauna affects the abundance of sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepods. The copepods inhabited a subtidal seagrass (Zostera marina L.) bed in British Columbia, Canada. The response of the harpacticoid community was observed in controlled field experiments in which epibenthic predators-disturbers were excluded from portions of the seagrass bed. Controlled, exclusion-cage (0.8 m2 area, 7-mm mesh) experiments were conducted within the seagrass bed from late March/early April to mid-June in both 1986 and 1987. Sampling was conducted biweekly. Exclusion of large epibenthic predators-disturbers had little effect on sediment-dwelling harpacticoid copepod density. Total harpacticoid numbers and abundances of dominant species generally did not increase in the exclusion treatment relative to the control. Shifts in species composition of the harpacticoid community did not occur. The treatment control was adequate in simulating the exclusion cage structure. It appears that large epibenthic predators-disturbers have little impact on the abundance of harpacticoid copepod populations at this study site. 相似文献

Terms such as 'vulnerability' and 'insecurity' are used widely in the general nutrition literature as well as in work on humanitarian response. Yet these words are used rather loosely. This paper argues that more clarity in their usage would benefit those seeking a bridge between development and humanitarian problems. Since vulnerability is not fully coincident with malnutrition, poverty or other conventional indices of human deprivation, public action must be based on a better understanding of the nature of crises and human uncertainty beyond physiological and nutritional outcomes. More attention is needed to be paid to the context-specific nature of risks, the capacity of households to manage such risks and the potential for public action to bolster indigenous capacity through targeted development investments, not just relief. 相似文献

Anoxia can restrict species establishment in aquatic systems and the artificial promotion of these conditions can provide an effective control strategy for invasive molluscs. Low abundances (2-20 m(-2)) of the nonnative bivalve, Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea), were first recorded in Lake Tahoe, CA-NV in 2002 and by 2010 nuisance-level population densities (>10,000 m(-2)) were observed. A non-chemical control method using gas impermeable benthic barriers to reduce dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations available to C. fluminea was tested in this ultra-oligotrophic natural lake. In 2009, the impact of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) sheets (9 m(2), n = 6) on C. fluminea beds was tested on 1-7 day intervals over a 56 day period (August-September). At an average water temperature of 18 °C, DO concentrations under these small barriers were reduced to zero after 72 h resulting in 100 % C. fluminea mortality after 28 days. In 2010, a large EPDM barrier (1,950 m(2)) was applied to C. fluminea populations for 120 days (July-November). C. fluminea abundances were reduced over 98 % after barrier removal, and remained significantly reduced (>90 %) 1 year later. Non-target benthic macroinvertebrate abundances were also reduced, with variable taxon-specific recolonization rates. High C. fluminea abundance under anoxic conditions increased the release of ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus from the sediment substrate; but levels of unionized ammonia were low at 0.004-0.005 mg L(-1). Prolonged exposure to anoxia using benthic barriers can provide an effective short term control strategy for C. fluminea. 相似文献

Environmental compliance requirements periodically impact the military's ability to use all installation resources. In response, environmental management strategies have been developed to ensure compliance and allow site closure. This study examines the relationship between environmental management strategies and environmental compliance at U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) installations via analysis of environmental compliance audit scores. Five environmental scores of interest from 1998 to 2004 audits—which include total compliance, total management, audit management, policy management, and training management—were subjected to statistical analysis. Results showed the USMC met environmental compliance and management standards, despite limited resources. High management strategy scores were moderately correlated with high total compliance scores. Total management scores improved over time, and noncompliance was most often associated with a lack of resources and plans. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
