Objectives: The accuracy of self-reported driving exposure has questioned the validity of using self-reported mileage to inform research questions. Studies examining the accuracy of self-reported driving exposure compared to objective measures find low validity, with drivers overestimating and underestimating driving distance. The aims of the current study were to (1) examine the discrepancy between self-reported annual mileage and driving exposure the following year and (2) investigate whether these differences depended on age and annual mileage.

Methods: Two estimates of drivers’ self-reported annual mileage collected during vehicle installation (obtained via prestudy questionnaires) and approximated annual mileage driven (based upon Global Positioning System data) were acquired from 3,323 participants who participated in the Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study.

Results: A Wilcoxon signed rank test showed that there was a significant difference between self-reported and annual driving exposure during participation in SHRP 2, with the majority of self-reported responses overestimating annual mileage the following year, irrespective of whether an ordinal or ratio variable was examined. Over 15% of participants provided self-reported responses with over 100% deviation, which were exclusive to participants underestimating annual mileage. Further, deviations in reporting differed between participants who had low, medium, and high exposure, as well as between participants in different age groups.

Conclusions: These findings indicate that although self-reported annual mileage is heavily relied on for research, such estimates of driving distance may be an overestimate of current or future mileage and can influence the validity of prior research that has utilized estimates of driving exposure.  相似文献

Both body mass and surface area are factors determining the essence of any living organism. This should also hold true for an extinct organism such as a dinosaur. The present report discusses the use of a new 3D laser scanner method to establish body masses and surface areas of an Asian elephant (Zoological Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark) and of Plateosaurus engelhardti, a prosauropod from the Upper Triassic, exhibited at the Paleontological Museum in Tübingen (Germany). This method was used to study the effect that slight changes in body shape had on body mass for P. engelhardti. It was established that body volumes varied between 0.79 m3 (slim version) and 1.14 m3 (robust version), resulting in a presumable body mass of 630 and 912 kg, respectively. The total body surface areas ranged between 8.8 and 10.2 m2, of which, in both reconstructions of P. engelhardti, ∼33% account for the thorax area alone. The main difference between the two models is in the tail and hind limb reconstruction. The tail of the slim version has a surface area of 1.98 m2, whereas that of the robust version has a surface area of 2.73 m2. The body volumes calculated for the slim version were as follows: head 0.006 m3, neck 0.016 m3, fore limbs 0.020 m3, hind limbs 0.08 m3, thoracic cavity 0.533 m3, and tail 0.136 m3. For the robust model, the following volumes were established: 0.01 m3 head, neck 0.026 m3, fore limbs 0.025 m3, hind limbs 0.18 m3, thoracic cavity 0.616 m3, and finally, tail 0.28 m3. Based on these body volumes, scaling equations were used to assess the size that the organs of this extinct dinosaur have.  相似文献

Fifty-eight fungi have been tested for their ability to degrade a recalcitrant synthetic polymer polyamide-6, generally known as nylon-6. Most of them were isolated from a factory producing nylon-6. After preliminary screening, 12 strains were selected for submerged culture in a medium with nylon fibres as the only N-source. No degradation was observed with the isolates from the factory. Wood degrading fungi from a culture collection, however, degraded nylon after incubation for several weeks. Bjerkandera adusta disintegrated the fibres most efficiently, starting with the small transverse grooves, which deepened into cracks. The superficial layers crumbled to leave a thin inner core of the fibre, which finally broke down into fragments. The remaining insoluble part of the nylon showed a decrease in number average molecular mass from 16900 to 5600 during a 60-day incubation. Its thermal properties, such as shifts in melting points and broadening of the melting endotherms, were altered. The reduction of the amount of nylon and the composition of the liquid phase indicated that part of the polymer was degraded into soluble products. After 50 days, the total nitrogen content of the soluble fraction was 10-fold higher than in the control sample. Manganese peroxidase, presumably responsible for the degradation, was detected in the liquid phase. The study shows that only white rot fungi are able to break down nylon-6. For the first time this polymer was shown to be disrupted by B. adusta. The extent of the biodegradation indicates its potential for application in nylon waste reduction.  相似文献
