Trichloroacetic acid (TCA, CCl(3)COOH) is a phytotoxic chemical. Although TCA salts and derivates were once used as herbicides to combat perennial grasses and weeds, they have since been banned because of their indiscriminate herbicidal effects on woody plant species. However, TCA can also be formed in the atmosphere. For instance, the high-volatile C(2)-chlorohydrocarbons tetrachloroethene (TECE, C(2)Cl(4)) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE, CCl(3)CH(3)) can react under oxidative conditions in the atmosphere to form TCA and other substances. The ongoing industrialisation of Southeast Asia, South Africa and South America means that use of TECE as solvents in the metal and textile industries of these regions in the southern hemisphere can be expected to rise. The increasing emissions of this substance--together with the rise in the atmospheric oxidation potential caused by urban activities, slash and burn agriculture and forest fires in the southern hemisphere--could lead to a greater input/formation of TCA in the vegetation located in the lee of these emission sources. By means of biomonitoring studies, the input/formation of TCA in vegetation was detected at various locations in South America, North America, Africa, and Europe.  相似文献

Artemisia lerchiana is a wormwood species of the Central Asian steppe regions, where it completely cover whole areas. For the first time it was possible to show through field experiments that C(1)/C(2) halocarbons (VCHCs), such as chloroform (CHL), tetrachloroethene (PER) and hexachloroethane (HEX), can be taken up by test plants of the species A. lerchiana via the soil/root pathway and metabolised inter alia into trichloroacetic acid (TCA) under semi-aride conditions. At the same time, chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements carried out on the test plants revealed a phytotoxic influence on plant vitality (max. decline in vitality of 52% with application of CHL) and less efficient energy flows in the photosynthesis mechanism of the A. lerchiana test plants. The authors examine possible links between the simultaneous appearance of VCHCs and additional drought stress in the acceleration of desertification processes.  相似文献

With the recession of the Aral Sea in Central Asia, once the world’s fourth largest lake, a huge new saline desert emerged which is nowadays called the Aralkum. Saline soils in the Aralkum are a major source for dust and salt storms in the region. The aim of this study was to analyze the spatio-temporal land cover change dynamics in the Aralkum and discuss potential implications for the recent and future dust and salt storm activity in the region. MODIS satellite time series were classified from 2000–2008 and change of land cover was quantified. The Aral Sea desiccation accelerated between 2004 and 2008. The area of sandy surfaces and salt soils, which bear the greatest dust and salt storm generation potential increased by more than 36 %. In parts of the Aralkum desalinization of soils was found to take place within 4–8 years. The implication of the ongoing regression of the Aral Sea is that the expansion of saline surfaces will continue. Knowing the spatio-temporal dynamics of both the location and the surface characteristics of the source areas for dust and salt storms allows drawing conclusions about the potential hazard degree of the dust load. The remote-sensing-based land cover assessment presented in this study could be coupled with existing knowledge on the location of source areas for an early estimation of trends in shifting dust composition. Opportunities, limits, and requirements of satellite-based land cover classification and change detection in the Aralkum are discussed.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the composting processes in Sri Lanka and to identify essential improvements. The study consisted of a questionnaire survey, field observations, and interviews. The main shortcomings identified by this study were: no source separation at origin, and no monitoring for temperature, moisture, stability, or maturity during processes of composting. These problems hinder the smooth operation of the composting processes and lead to low demand for compost. Based on the findings, the recommendations for increasing the demand for compost are performing source separation during waste collections, improvement of processes by monitoring the temperature and moisture, and marketing compost so as to improve the popularity of the compost among farmers.  相似文献
