The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate fruits of C. chinense accessions for their concentration of β -carotene, ascorbic acid, and phenols for use as parents in breeding for these phytochemicals. Mature fruits of 63 accessions of C. chinense originally acquired from Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the United States were analyzed for their chemical composition. Fruits of C. chinense accessions PI-152452 (Brazil) and PI-360726 (Ecuador) contained the greatest concentrations of ascorbic acid (1.2 and 1.1 mg g?1 fresh fruit, respectively), while PI-438648 (Mexico) contained the greatest concentration of total phenols content (349 μ g g?1 fresh fruit) among the other 63 accessions tested. Accession PI-355817 from Ecuador contained the greatest concentrations of β -carotene (8 mg g?1fresh fruit). These accessions were identified as potential candidates for mass production of antioxidants with health-promoting properties.  相似文献

The mechanism of silicification from which the intricate cell walls of diatoms emerge, as well as the stereochemical relationship between the wall's organic casing and the siliceous materials within, continue to elude current technology. The present study further develops Hecky et al.'s standing model of the organicinorganic interface with semi-empirical computer simulations of a biosilicification pathway. Polycondensation reactions between silicic acid molecules and a hydroxyl-rich -sheet protein template results in a stereochemically-compatible chemisorbed tetrasiloxane ring. The 24-stage reaction pathway has an activation barrier of +15.4 kcal mol-1 and results in a net stabilization of-28.0 kcal mol-1. Spatial matching and favorable thermodynamics support the theory of protein-mediated biomineralization of the diatom.  相似文献

The foraging behavior of the bucktooth parrotfish Sparisoma radians was studied in seagrass beds off St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and in laboratory preference tests. Thalassia testudinum was the dominant item in the field diet with the epiphytized distal portion of the blades most favored. Other seagrasses, Syringodium filiforme and Halodule wrightii, were taken in relation to their abundance. Several algae were also eaten, particularly Halimeda spp. and Penicillus spp. Although abundances of the algae varied, the fish maintained a steady mixture of plant species in their diet. Laboratory feeding tests for various plants presented in pairs showed clear preferences in nearly all cases. The preference hierarchy was (1) T. testudinum with epiphytes, (2) H. wrightii, (3) T. testudinum without epiphytes, (4) S. filiforme, and the algae, (5) Dictyota divaricata, (6) Enteromorpha flexuosa, (7) Caulerpa mexicana, (8) Halimeda incrassata and (9) Penicillis pyriformis. Preference did not vary significantly with satiation. The catch per unit effort (kilocalories absorbed per bite) was calculated for each plant, using (a) absorption values calculated for S. radians fed the different plants, (b) the calorific values for tested plants, and (c) an estimate of the amount of material taken per bite. The ranking of catch per unit effort closely paralleled the preference hierarchy with the exception of C. mexicana which has a toxin. Fish fed diets of single plants, mixed plant diet, and starved controls showed differential survival which paralleled the preference hierarchy, the most preferred plants leading to longest survival. Comparison of laboratory results with field feeding behavior shows that inclusion of plants in the diet is not related directly to preference rank, availability or survival value, but that the fish deliberately eat a variety of plants presumably which maintains balanced diet. This result indicates that models of optimal foraging for herbivores should include nutrient constraints and avoidance of toxins in order to predict accurately the behavior of an animal in the field.  相似文献

The frequency distribution of shell lengths in the mussels Mytilus edulis (L.) taken from a site in the Tyne Estuary (UK) in summer, 1980, typically displayed a bimodal shape, with a small peak in the 8 to 20 mm size range and a much broader peak in the 22 to 50 mm region. A collection of mussels was made consisting of two groups, one from each of the above size peaks. The group of larger mussels had a significantly higher mean zinc concentration than the group of smaller mussels, mainly because a few large individuals had very high zinc concentrations. The ratios of shell width:height, width:length and length:height were also significantly higher in larger mussels. However, the ratio of flesh dry wt:shell dry wt (flesh condition) was lower in larger individuals. The whole soft tissue zinc concentration was positively correlated with width:height and width:length, but negatively correlated with flesh wt:shell wt. It was concluded that allometric ratios may provide an attractive alternative to simple size characteristics as a basis for trace metal determinations, particularly in a comparison of metal levels in mussel populations from widely differing habitats where absolute size is a poor indicator of age or growth rate.Contribution No. 1221 of the Center for Estuarine and Environmental Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

Antibodies against polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used to determine if immunohistochemical methods could detect PCBs in embryos and larvae of a territorial coral reef fish (Abudefduf sordidus; Pomacentridae) collected from Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific Ocean. Sites with differing levels of contamination were sampled, one with relatively high sediment PCB concentrations of up to 389.0 ng/g and another with low PCB concentrations of only 0.5 ng/g. Immunostaining suggested that PCB concentrations were higher in fish larvae from the PCB contaminated site and that PCB concentrations within abnormal embryos were higher than normal embryos from the same nest. This technique will be useful for detecting exposed populations in the field and assessing correlations with adverse effects, particularly in potential indicator organisms such as Abudefduf sordidus.  相似文献

Body zinc concentrations (on a soft parts dry weight basis) in 18 composite collections of mussels (Mytilus edulis) taken from different shore levels within a single mussel bed on the north shore of the Tyne estuary at Tynemouth, on 25 October, 1980, showed highly significant correlations with 4 allometric, size-related factors. A negative correlation was found between body zinc concentration and a flesh condition (FC) index defined as mg dry flesh wt per g dry shell wt. Positive correlations were found between body zinc concentration and width: height ratio, width: length ratio and shell valve inequality index (SVI) defined as the weight of heavier shell valve/weight of lighter shell valve. Unlike earlier observations on a single population taken from a single habitat, this heterogeneous collection showed no significant relationship between body zinc concentration and body size as determined by soft-parts dry weight. Body zinc concentration and allometric ratios were, however, related to position on the shoreline. It is suggested that, where mussels are collected from different habitats, environmental factors probably have a greater influence on body size than age. Therefore, normalization of trace metal concentrations to a standard body weight may not be appropriate where specimens are collected from a variety of habitats. Salt marshes persist within the intertidal zone when marsh elevation gains are commensurate with rates of sea-level rise (SLR). Monitoring changes in marsh elevation in concert with tidal water levels is therefore an effective way to determine if salt marshes are keeping pace with SLR over time. Surface elevation tables (SETs) are a common method for collecting precise data on marsh elevation change. Southern New England is a hot spot for SLR, but few SET elevation change datasets are available for the region. Our study synthesizes elevation change data collected from 1999 to 2015 from a network of SET stations throughout Rhode Island (RI). These data are compared to accretion and water level data from the same time period to estimate shallow subsidence and determine whether marshes are tracking SLR. Salt marsh elevation increased at a mean overall rate of 1.40 mm year?1 and ranged from ?0.33 to 3.36 mm year?1 at individual stations. Shallow subsidence dampened elevation gain in mid-Narragansett Bay marshes, but in other areas of coastal RI, subsurface processes may augment surface accretion. In all cases, marsh elevation gain was exceeded by the 5.26 mm year?1 rate of increase in sea levels during the study period. Our study provides the first SET elevation change data from RI and shows that most RI marshes are not keeping pace with short- or long-term rates of SLR. It also lends support to previous research that implicates SLR as a primary driver of recent changes to southern New England salt marshes.  相似文献

The stable nitrogen isotope ratios of some biota have been used as indicators of sources of anthropogenic nitrogen. In this study the relationships of the stable nitrogen isotope ratios of marsh plants, Iva frutescens (L.), Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin ex Steud, Spartina patens (Ait.) Muhl, Spartina alterniflora Loisel, Ulva lactuca (L.), and Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) with wastewater nitrogen and land development in New England are described. Five of the six plant species (all but U. lactuca) showed significant relationships of increasing δ 15N values with increasing wastewater nitrogen. There was a significant (P < 0.0001) downward shift in the δ 15N of S. patens (6.0 ± 0.48‰) which is mycorrhizal compared with S. alterniflora (8.5 ± 0.41‰). The downward shift in δ 15N may be caused by the assimilation of fixed nitrogen in the roots of S. patens. P. australis within sites had wide ranges of δ 15N values, evidently influenced by the type of shoreline development or buffer at the upland border. In residential areas, the presence of a vegetated buffer (n = 24 locations) significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the δ 15N (mean = 7.4 ± 0.43‰) of the P. australis compared to stands where there was no buffer (mean = 10.9 ± 1.0‰; n = 15). Among the plant species, I. frutescens located near the upland border showed the most significant (R 2 = 0.64; P = 0.006) inverse relationship with the percent agricultural land in the watershed. The δ 15N of P. australis and I. frustescens is apparently an indicator of local inputs near the upland border, while the δ 15N of Spartina relates with the integrated, watershed-sea nitrogen inputs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: In‐reservoir thermal and ecological effects of releasing some flows over the surface spillway at Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado, rather than routing all releases through the hypolimnetic outlet were evaluated using a calibrated and validated one‐dimensional thermal model (CE‐THERM) with a set of ecological models. Thermal model output indicated that surface water temperatures were influenced primarily by atmospheric conditions, but the release of warmer water over the spillway resulted in a thinner epilimnion and cooler metalimnetic water temperatures. Ecological model predictions indicated that spillway releases and associated temperatures resulted in lower growth rates for young‐of‐year (YOY) kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the reservoir by up to 9 percent when compared with growth rates under baseline operations with no releases over the spillway. Kokanee growth rates were reduced under spillway release scenarios because lower temperatures not only affected metabolic rates, but limited the productivity of the zooplankton as well. Thus, altering the release regime with spillway discharges could have deleterious effects on Blue Mesa's YOY kokanee. However, in other reservoirs, distributing discharges among different elevations may provide managers with a mechanism to regulate temperatures to benefit species of concern that are facing challenges imposed by environmental conditions such as global warming.  相似文献

Informal trails created or perpetuated by visitors is a management challenge in many protected natural areas such as Yosemite National Park. This is a significant issue as informal trail networks penetrate and proliferate into protected landscapes and habitats, threatening ecological integrity, aesthetics, and visitor experiences. In order to develop effective strategies for addressing this problem under an adaptive management framework, indicators must be developed and monitoring protocol must be established to gather timely and relevant data about the condition, extent, and distribution of these undesired trail segments. This article illustrates a process of developing and evaluating informal trail indicators for meadows in Yosemite Valley. Indicator measures developed in past research were reviewed to identify their appropriateness for the current application. Information gaps in existing indicator measures were addressed by creating two new indices to quantify the degree of informal trailing based on its land fragmentation effects. The selected indicator measures were applied to monitoring data collected between 2006 and 2008. The selected measures and indices were evaluated for their ability to characterize informal trail impacts at site and landscape scales. Results demonstrate the utility of indicator measures in capturing different characteristics of the informal trail problem, though several metrics are strongly related to each other. The two fragmentation indices were able to depict fragmentation without being too sensitive to changes in one constituent parameter. This study points to the need for a multiparameter approach to informal trail monitoring and integration with other monitoring data. Implications for monitoring programs and research are discussed.  相似文献
