Recent epidemiological studies have consistently shown that the acute mortality effects of high concentrations of ambient particulate matter (PM), documented in historic air pollution episodes, may also be occurring at the low to moderate concentrations of ambient PM found in modern urban areas. In London in December 1952, the unexpected deaths due to PM exposure could be identified and counted as integers by the coroners. In modern times, the PM-related deaths cannot be as readily identified, and they can only be inferred as fractional average daily increases in mortality rates using sophisticated statistical filtering and analyses of the air quality and mortality data. The causality of the relationship between exposure to ambient PM and acute mortality at these lower modern PM concentrations has been questioned because of a perception that there is little significant correlation in time between the ambient PM concentrations and measured personal exposure to PM from all sources (ambient PM plus indoor-generated PM). This article shows that the critical factor supporting the plausibility of a linear PM mortality relationship is the expected high correlation in time of people's exposure to PM of ambient origin with measured ambient PM concentrations, as used in the epidemiological time series studies. The presence of indoor and personal sources of PM masks this underlying relationship, leading to confusion in the scientific literature about the strong underlying temporal relationship between personal exposure to PM of ambient origin and ambient PM concentration. The authors show that the sources of PM of non-ambient origin operate independently of the ambient PM concentrations, so that the mortality effect of non-ambient PM, if any, must be independent of the effects of the ambient PM exposures. 相似文献

The acute toxicities of 19 substituted benzene compounds and intermediates of pesticides to Photobacterium phosphoreum in beta-CD aqueous solution (5 g/L) were studied and compared with those in water through luminescent bacteria toxicity test, and 15min-EC50 values were obtained. The presence of beta-CD significantly reduce biotoxicities of the low-polarity compounds, while for the higher-polarity compounds, such effect was slight. The differences of biotoxicities were correlated with Log10Kow (octanol/water partition coefficients). A significant linear relationship was obtained with some abnormal data picked out. Bufo arenarum embryos at the end of their embryonic development were acclimated to cadmium (Cd) by means of a 10-day treatment protocol. Embryos were processed for metallothionein (Mt) isolation and Cd and zinc (Zn) contents were measured. The results showed that: (1) the uptake of Cd in the experimental embryos was 7 microg/g embryo (wet weight) representing a bioaccumulation of Cd 255 times higher than in the maintaining medium; (2) a major Mt-like fraction was Cd-induced 7.8 times that in control embryos; two other protein fractions also bound Cd and Zn but were induced by Cd only about 2 and 1.4 times; (3) the Zn concentration was about 44 microg Zn/g embryo (wet weight) and did not change significantly (p>0.01) in the experimental embryos with respect to controls, but in acclimated embryos the essential metal was released from the Mts. The photoreactions of selected azaarenes with nitrate and nitrite ions were investigated under irradiation at lambda = 313 nm. The excitation of both anions leads to several photochemical reactions forming mainly hydroxyl radicals and nitrogen oxides. The purification capability of natural waters i.e. the oxidation of inorganic and organic substances results from the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Nitrated isomers of azaarenes were found among the main products of the investigated photoreactions. The nitrogen oxides were responsible for the production of nitrated derivatives which possess a high toxic potential. Their formation was explained by the parallel occurance of two mechanism, a molecular and a radical one. The molecular mechanism became more important with increasing ionisation potentials of the azaarenes. The spectrum of oxidized products corresponded to the one got in the photoreactions of azaarenes with hydrogen peroxide. The formation of several oxidation and nitration products of the pyridine ring with its low electron density was explained by the reaction of excited states of azaarenes. The photoreactions with nitrite ions only led to the formation of oxidized and nitrated products. Nitroso products were not formed. Semiconductor-assisted photocatalytic degradation of reactive dyes in aqueous solution 总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21
This work reports the semiconductor-assisted photochemical degradation of reactive dyes. In an oxygenated-UV-ZnO system almost total decolorization of Remazol Brilliant Blue R, Remazol Black B, Reactive Blue 221 and Reactive Blue 222 was observed in reaction times of about 60 min. Extending the photochemical treatment up to 120 min, mineralization higher than 80% for all the dyes was observed. During the same period, the residual acute toxicity was significantly reduced only for Remazol Black B. A systematic optimization study carried out by factorial design showed that for the reactive dyes tested, the ZnO semiconductor exhibits a better efficiency than that observed with anatase TiO2. A synergistic effect in the coupled TiO2-ZnO system was not observed. 相似文献
