INTRODUCTION: Motorcycling is recognized to be a relatively risky activity. Powered two wheelers (PTW) are classified as mopeds, light, and heavy motorcycles, the first two categories being denoted light PTWs. This paper reviews the scientific literature on accident risks and traffic behavior among users of light PTWs with the aim of clarifying the current state of knowledge. METHOD: Based on a risk analytical and an anthropological perspective on motorcycling, the paper discusses the significance of cultural and social factors as important aspects of safety. More targeted and effective safety measures, for example better training programs, are needed to prevent motorcycle accidents. This means developing a deeper understanding of the rider as an individual, and the individuals within different groups and settings. Why and how motorcyclists approach the road, its function as a social arena, the varieties of goals and values, and the motorcyclists' own perceptions of the behavior that ensures their "achievements" or "successes", are some of the issues. Today, this kind of knowledge is scarce and almost entirely absent from the scientific literature. RESULTS: We conclude that the massive quantities of data on numbers of accidents, the categorization of situations, the causal explanations related to speed, gender, age, lack of concentration so forth, can only be employed as support for safety measures as long as they are linked to social and cultural factors. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: Risk informed decision making has become an integral part of authorities' and manufacturers' implementation of safety measures. This tendency is strengthened by the fact that the responsibility of product safety rests upon the manufacturers, cf. for example EU safety regulations. Therefore it is paramount that a thorough understanding of social and cultural factors related to the PTW driving is necessary for the industry to develop targeted and efficient safety measures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Most time-series studies of particulate air pollution and acute health outcomes assess exposure of the study population using fixed-site outdoor measurements. To address the issue of exposure misclassification, we evaluate the relationship between ambient particle concentrations and personal exposures of a population expected to be at risk of particle health effects.

Sampling was conducted within the Vancouver metropolitan area during April-September 1998. Sixteen subjects (non-smoking, ages 54-86) with physician-diagnosed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) wore personal PM2 5 monitors for seven 24-hr periods, randomly spaced approximately 1.5 weeks apart. Time-activity logs and dwelling characteristics data were also obtained for each subject. Daily 24-hr ambient PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were measured at five fixed sites spaced throughout the study region. SO4 2-, which is found almost exclusively in the fine particle fraction and which does not have major indoor sources, was measured in all PM2 5 samples as an indicator of accumulation mode particu-late matter of ambient origin.  相似文献

EU's programme Clean Air for Europe (CAFE) is presently revising the policy on air quality which will lead to the adoption of a thematic strategy on air pollution under the Sixth Environmental Action Programme by mid-2005. For the abatement of surface ozone it is becoming evident that processes outside European control will be crucial for meeting long-term aims and air quality guidelines in Europe in the future. Measurements and modelling results indicate that there is a strong link between climate change and surface ozone. A warmer and dryer European climate is very likely to lead to increased ozone concentrations. Furthermore, increased anthropogenic emissions in developing economies in Asia are likely to raise the hemispheric background level of ozone. A significant increase in the background concentration of ozone has been observed at several sites in Northern Europe although the underlying causes are not settled. The photochemical formation of tropospheric ozone from increased concentrations of methane and CO may also lead to a higher ozone level on a global scale. Gradually, these effects may outweigh the effect of the reduced European ozone precursor emissions. This calls for a global or hemispheric perspective in the revision of the European air quality policy for ozone.  相似文献

Along with a steady reduction of acid inputs during 14 years of intensive forest monitoring in Norway, the influence of acid deposition upon soil water acidity is gradually reduced in favour of other and internal sources of H+ and sulphate, in particular from processes in the upper soil layer. We used statistical analyses in two steps for precipitation, throughfall and soil water at 5, 15 and 40 cm depths. Firstly, we employed time series analyses to model the temporal variation as a long-term linear trend and a monthly variation, and by this filtered out residual, weekly variation. Secondly, we used the parameter estimates and the residuals from this to show that the long term, the monthly and the weekly variation in one layer were correlated to similar temporal variation in the above, adjacent layer. This was strongly evident for throughfall correlated to precipitation, but much weaker for soil water. Continued acidification in soil water on many plots suggests that the combined effects of anthropogenic and natural acid inputs exceed in places the buffering capacity of the soil.  相似文献

While factors affecting body growth have been extensively studied, very little is known about the factors likely to affect the sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in polygynous mammals. Based on the carcass mass of 24420 male and female moose recorded in 14 Norwegian populations, we examine three hypotheses to explain geographical variation in SSD. First, SSD is expected to decrease when the relative density of animals (for a given habitat quality) increases, because resource limitation at high population densities is assumed to affect body growth of males more than females. Second, because males are selected to invest in growth more than females, environmental seasonality and related improvement of the forage quality during the short and intense growing season are expected to increase SSD. Third, by decreasing the proportion of adult males in the population, resulting in start of rutting earlier in life, hunting may decrease the SSD by increasing the reproductive cost of young males. We found that males grew faster and for a longer time of their life than did females and thus were heavier (-24%) when they reached adulthood. Sexual size dimorphism was independent of density but was higher in areas with short growing seasons. The low SSD in populations with largely adult female-biased sex ratios (males per female) shows that male body growth decreases with a decreasing proportion of adult males in the population. Our results indicate that geographical variation in moose SSD is influenced by divergent responses in the sexes to ecological factors affecting body growth.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of bacteria and metazooplankton on the production of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) during blooms of Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay and Mohler in seawater mesocosms. The phytoplankton succession was marked by the rapid collapse of an initial Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve bloom followed by a small E. huxleyi bloom. The collapse of the diatom bloom was accompanied by an increase in concentrations of dissolved DMSP (DMSPd) and bacterial abundance and activity (as determined by the thymidine incorporation technique). The increase in bacterial activity was followed by a rapid decrease in DMSPd concentrations which remained low for the rest of the experiment, even during the subsequent collapse of the E. huxleyi blooms. The absence of DMSPd and DMS peaks during the declining phase of the E. huxleyi blooms was attributed to the high bacterial activity prevailing at that time. The influence of metazooplankton grazing on DMSP and DMS production was investigated by adding moderate (24 mg dry weight m-3) and high (520 mg dry weight m-3) concentrations of Copepodite Stage V and adults of Calanus finmarchicus to two of four filtered (200 m mesh net) enclosures during the E. huxleyi blooms. The addition of C. finmarchicus, even in high concentrations, had no apparent effect on the dynamics of E. huxleyi, suggesting that the copepods were not grazing significantly on nanophytoplankton. The addition of copepods in high concentrations favored an accumulation of chlorophyll a and particulate DMSP. These results suggest that copepods were preying on the herbivorous microzooplankton which, in turn, was controlling the biomass of nanophytoplankton. DMS production was also enhanced in the enclosure with maximum metazooplankton biomass, suggesting that the grazing of C. finmarchicus on microzooplankton containing DMSP may contribute to DMS production. These results provide strong support to the emerging idea that bacteria and metazooplankton grazing play a dominant role in determining the timing and magnitude of DMS pulses following phytoplankton blooms.  相似文献

The combined UAM-AERO/RAMS modeling system has been applied to study the dynamics of photochemical gaseous species and particulate matter processes in the eastern Mediterranean area between the Greek mainland and the island of Crete. In particular, the modeling system is applied to simulate atmospheric conditions for two periods, i.e., 13-16 July 2000 and 26-30 July 2000. The spatial and temporal distributions of both gaseous and particulate matter pollutants have been extensively studied together with the identification of major emission sources in the area. New pre-processors were developed for the UAM-AERO model for evaluating detailed emission inventories for biogenic compounds, resuspended dust and sea salt. Comparison of the modeling results with measured data was performed and satisfactory agreement was found for a number of gaseous species. However, the model underestimates the PM10 measured concentrations during summer. This is mainly due to the considerable underestimation of particulate matter emissions and in particular dust resuspension, the effect of forest fire emissions and the contribution of Saharan dust episodes.  相似文献

Particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) has been shown to have a wide range of adverse health effects and consequently is regulated in accordance with the US-EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards. PM2.5 originates from multiple primary sources and is also formed through secondary processes in the atmosphere. It is plausible that some sources form PM2.5 that is more toxic than PM2.5 from other sources. Identifying the responsible sources could provide insight into the biological mechanisms causing the observed health effects and provide a more efficient approach to regulation. This is the goal of the Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study, a multi-year PM2.5 source apportionment and health study.The first step in apportioning the PM2.5 to different sources is to determine the chemical make-up of the PM2.5. This paper presents the methodology used during the DASH study for organic speciation of PM2.5. Specifically, methods are covered for solvent extraction of non-polar and semi-polar organic molecular markers using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Vast reductions in detection limits were obtained through the use of a programmable temperature vaporization (PTV) inlet along with other method improvements. Results are presented for the first 1.5 years of the DASH study revealing seasonal and source-related patterns in the molecular markers and their long-term correlation structure. Preliminary analysis suggests that point sources are not a significant contributor to the organic molecular markers measured at our receptor site. Several motor vehicle emission markers help identify a gasoline/diesel split in the ambient data. Findings show both similarities and differences when compared with other cities where similar measurements and assessments have been made.  相似文献

Many studies have identified associations between adverse health effects and short-term exposure to particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5). These effects, however, are not consistent across geographical regions. This may be due in part to variations in the chemical make-up of PM2.5 resulting from unique combinations of sources, both primary and secondary, in different regions. The Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study is a multi-year time series study designed to characterize the daily chemical composition of PM2.5 in Denver, identify the major contributing sources, and investigate associations between sources and a broad array of adverse health outcomes.Measurement methodology, field blank correction, pointwise uncertainty estimation and detection limit consideration are discussed in the context of bulk speciation for the DASH study. Results are presented for the first 4.5 years of mass, inorganic ion and bulk carbon speciation. The derived measurement uncertainties were propagated using the root sum of squares method and show good agreement with precision estimates derived from bi-weekly duplicate samples collected on collocated samplers. Gravimetric mass has the most uncertainty of any measurement and reconstructed mass generated from the sum of the individual species shows less uncertainty than measured mass on average. The methods discussed provide a good framework for PM2.5 speciation measurements and are generalizable to analysis of other environmental measures.  相似文献
