This article explores the peat production impacts on Jukajoki river in Finland by implementing discourse analysis. Four discourses are explored: state truth statements; company statements that are in close proximity of state power; discourses provided by the local community Selkie, who provided counter-narratives to the official views; and finally media and related discourses. In conclusion, the discourses by the state and closely related actors (A–B) comprised implementation of their power and justifying it at the expense of those who are excluded from such power, in this case the village. The village narrative (C) contains elements that strongly contradict the statements provided by those with power. The results indicate local communities should be taken more seriously. The systematic denial of local peoples’ rights should be reviewed, and local participation in environmental permit assessments implemented. 相似文献
A global trend of a warming climate may seriously affect species dependent on sea ice. We investigated the impact of climate on the Baltic ringed seals (Phoca hispida botnica), using historical and future climatological time series. Availability of suitable breeding ice is known to affect pup survival. We used detailed information on how winter temperatures affect the extent of breeding ice and a climatological model (RCA3) to project the expected effects on the Baltic ringed seal population. The population comprises of three sub-populations, and our simulations suggest that all of them will experience severely hampered growth rates during the coming 90 years. The projected 30 730 seals at the end of the twenty-first century constitutes only 16 % of the historical population size, and thus reduced ice cover alone will severely limit their growth rate. This adds burden to a species already haunted by other anthropogenic impacts. 相似文献
The principal objective of the study was to characterize effects of increasing density of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata (Lepidoptera, Geometridae), for 3 successive years on the change in metabolome of mountain birch trees (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii). During the three study years (2000–2002), the larval density varied from low to very high (outbreak) density. Samples of leaves were collected from the same 12 trees at the same phenological stage of the trees each year. The leaves were collected from undamaged trees in the first year, from trees slightly damaged by larvae in the second year, and from trees heavily damaged by larvae in the third year. Metabolome analysis showed that the increase in density of E. autumnata larvae and degree of damage of birch trees caused multiple biochemical changes in the leaves, including increased concentrations of phenolic compounds (proanthocyanidins and hydrolysable tannins) and reduced concentrations of nutritive metabolites (monosaccharides, amino acids and some organic acids). These changes reduced the quality of leaves as food for larvae and, probably, were associated with induced chemical resistance of the birches to herbivorous insects. Additionally, the concentration of α-tocopherol was significantly higher in both slightly and heavily damaged trees. Mechanisms of changes in the metabolism of phenolic compounds and carbohydrates, and the role of α-tocopherol in their regulation are discussed. 相似文献

Regulations, encourage pulp industry to reduce carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions. Kraft pulp mills produce
CO2 mainly in combustion processes. The largest sources
are the recovery boiler, the biomass boiler, and the lime kiln. Due to utilizing
mostly biomass-based fuels, the CO2 is largely biogenic.
Capture and storage of CO2 (CCS) could offer pulp and paper
industry the possibility to act as site for negative CO2
emissions. In addition, captured biogenic CO2 can be used as
a raw material for bioproducts. Possibilities for CO2
utilization include tall oil manufacturing, lignin extraction, and production of
precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), depending on local conditions and
mill-specific details. In this study, total biomass-based CO2
capture and storage potential (BECCS) and potential to implement capture and
utilization of biomass-based CO2 (BECCU) in kraft pulp mills
were estimated by analyzing the impacts of the processes on the operation of two
modern reference mills, a Nordic softwood kraft pulp mill with integrated paper
production and a Southern eucalyptus kraft pulp mill. CO2
capture is energy-intensive, and thus the effects on the energy balances of the
mills were estimated. When papermaking is integrated in the mill operations, energy
adequacy can be a limiting factor for carbon capture implementation. Global carbon
capture potential was estimated based on pulp production data. Kraft pulp mills have
notable CO2 capture potential, while the on-site utilization
potential using currently available technologies is lower. The future of these
processes depends on technology development, desire to reuse
CO2, and prospective changes in legislation.
Exhaust gas particle and ion size distributions were measured from an off-road diesel engine complying with the European Stage IIIB emission standard. The measurements were performed at idling and low load conditions on an engine dynamometer. Nucleation-mode particles dominated the diesel exhaust particle number emissions at idle load. The nonvolatile nucleation-mode geometric mean diameter was detected at 10 nm or below. The nonvolatile nucleation-mode charge state implied that it has evolved through a highly ionizing environment before emission from the engine. The determined charging probabilities were 10.0 ± 2.2% for negative and 8.0 ± 2.0% for positive polarity particles. The nonvolatile nucleation particle concentration and size was also shown to be dependent on the lubricant oil composition. The particle emissions were efficiently controlled with a partial filter or with partial filter + selective catalytic reduction (SCR) combination. The particle number removal efficiencies of the aftertreatment systems were over 95% for wet total particle number (>3nm) and over 85% for dry particle total number. Nevertheless, the aftertreatment systems’ efficiencies were around 50% for the soot-mode particles. The low-load nonvolatile nucleation particle emissions were also dependent on the engine load, speed, and fuel injection pressure. The low load particle number emissions followed the soot-core trade-off, similar to medium or high operating loads.
Implications:Idling and low-load diesel engine exhaust emissions affect harmfully the ambient air quality. The low-load particle number emissions are here shown to peak in the 10-nm size range for a modern off-road engine. The particles are electrically charged and nonvolatile and they originate from the combustion process. Tailpipe particle control by open channel filter can remove more than 85% of the nonvolatile 10-nm particles and about 50% of the soot-mode particles, while the fuel injection pressure increase can lead to particle number increase. The study provides a new viewpoint for low-load particle emissions and control. 相似文献
This article explores the pioneering potential of communal visual-optic histories which are recorded, painted, documented, or otherwise expressed. These materials provide collective meanings of an image or visual material within a specific cultural group. They potentially provide a new method for monitoring and documenting changes to ecosystem health and species distribution, which can effectively inform society and decision makers of Arctic change. These visual histories can be positioned in a continuum that extends from rock art to digital photography. They find their expressions in forms ranging from images to the oral recording of knowledge and operate on a given cultural context. For monitoring efforts in the changing boreal zone and Arctic, a respectful engagement with visual histories can reveal emerging aspects of change. The examples from North America and case studies from Eurasia in this article include Inuit sea ice observations, Yu’pik visual traditions of masks, fish die-offs in a sub-boreal catchment area, permafrost melt in the Siberian tundra and early, first detection of a scarabaeid beetle outbreak, a Southern species in the Skolt Sámi area. The pros and cons of using these histories and their reliability are reviewed. 相似文献

Time series of abundance estimates are commonly used for analyses of population trends and possible shifts in growth rate.
We investigate if trends in age composition can be used as an alternative to abundance estimates for detection of decelerated
population growth. Both methods were tested under two forms of density dependence and different levels of environmental variation
in simulated time series of growth in Baltic gray seals. Under logistic growth, decelerating growth could be statistically
confirmed after 16 years based on population counts and 14 years based on age composition. When density dependence sets in
first at larger population sizes, the age composition method performed dramatically better than population counts, and a decline
could be detected after 4 years (versus 10 years). Consequently, age composition analysis provides a complementary method
to detect density dependence, particularly in populations where density dependence sets in late. 相似文献
Baltic grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) alternate between land and ice breeding, depending on ice conditions. We show that the fitness of grey seal females in terms of pup mortality and quality is reduced when breeding on land as compared with ice. The mean preweaning mortality rate on land was 21.1% (range 0% to 31.6%), and correlated with birth density (range 0.5-5.2 pups 100 m(-2)). The mean mortality rate on ice was 1.5%, where the highest density was 0.2 pups 100 m(-2) in particularly dense breeding groups. Mean weights of pups born on ice were significantly greater (48.3 +/- 8.1 kg) at the onset of moult as compared with pups born on land (37.4 +/- 7.8 kg). Because indices of life-time net reproductive rate (pup survival) and pup quality (weaning weight and health) were more auspicious on ice as compared with land, diminishing ice fields will lower the fitness of Baltic grey seal females and substantially increase the risk for quasi-extinction. 相似文献
