Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) is a ubiquitous branching coral found throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Like many other species of coral, P. damicornis displays a large range of morphologies. At One Tree Island, it occurs as two distinct morphs that are easily distinguished by the presence or absence of pink pigmentation. The two colour morphs of P. damicornis were found to differ in their distribution and abundance in the One Tree Island Lagoon. The brown morph was more abudant than the pink morph in the shallows (<1 m),whereas the pink morph was more abundant at deeper sites (>3 m). The two morphs also differed physiologically. The brown morph tended to have a greater calcification rate than the pink morph, regardless of environmental conditions. However, the difference in the calcification rate between the two morphs became non-significant under shaded conditions (5% full sunlight), indicating some degree of physiological plasticity of the morphs. The pink colour in P. damicornis was due to a hydrophilic pigment with a major peak absorbance at 560 nm. The expression of pink pigment had both genetic and phenotypic components. The brown morph has a reduced genetic capacity to express the pigment relative to the pink morph. On the other hand, pigment expression could be induced by light in the pink morph. Although genetic differences ultimately determine the differences between the two morphs of P. damicornis, the extent of pigment expression is under some degree of environmental influence.  相似文献

This paper describes the chemistry of porewater when constructing different soil layers on acidic weathered rock of a closed mine to remediate the surface environment. Three cases were set on a flat surface of the site, all under different layer systems. Case 1 was only composed of weathered rocks. A top neutralization layer was constructed on the weathered rocks in case 2, whereas both an upper low-permeable and middle neutralization layers were constructed on the weathered rocks in case 3. The low-permeable layer of 30?cm thick consists of clay, and the neutralization layer of 30?cm thick consists of the mixture of the weathered rock and calcium carbonate as a neutralizer. Porewater sampling systems and soil sensors to measure temperature, water content, and electrical conductivity were set at different depths. In case 1, steadily high concentrations of heavy metals were observed regardless of the depth, and the pH ranged from 2 to 4. In cases 2 and 3, a dramatic decrease in concentrations of heavy metals was observed, even below the neutralization layer. For both cases, pH values were circumneutral. There were no significant seasonable changes in heavy metals concentrations and pH of porewater by considering the temperature and precipitation. In addition, the water content of the layers in case 3 fluctuated more mildly than that in cases 1 and 2, indicating that the low-permeable layer reduced the rate of infiltration. Therefore, a significant reduction in the load of heavy metals released from the site can be achieved by both implementing neutralization and low-permeable layers.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to investigate the redox potential (Eh) of sulfidic groundwater in unconsolidated sediments. The Eh was determined by long-term (several days to several weeks) continuous in situ potentiometric measurements using a platinum (Pt) electrode. The Eh values measured in two monitoring campaigns were ?259 and ?202 mV, respectively. Chemical analysis of groundwater showed that the redox species in the groundwater were sulfide (S2???) and iron, respectively. The saturation indices calculated from the chemical analysis results indicated that FeS(am) and mainly mackinawite were close to equilibrium in the analyzed waters. Comparison of the measured Eh values with those calculated using different redox couples revealed that the Eh values measured in the first monitoring campaign were nearly equal to those calculated using HS???/SO $_{4}{^{2-}}$ , S2???/SO $_{4}{^{2-}}$ , FeS $_{(\text{am})}$ /SO $_{4}{^{2-}}$ , and mackinawite/SO $_{4}{^{2-}}$ redox couples; on the other hand, the Eh values measured in the second monitoring campaign were almost consistent with those measured using the FeS2/SO $_{4}{^{2-}}$ redox couple. The good fit between the measured Eh values and the theoretical calculated Eh values suggests that the sulfur system is related to the Eh value of sulfidic groundwater in unconsolidated sediments.  相似文献

Summary During foraging, natural enemies of herbivores may employ volatile allelochemicals that originate from an interaction of the herbivore and its host plant. The composition of allelochemical blends emitted by herbivore-infested plants is known to be affected by both the herbivore and the plant. Our chemical data add new evidence to the recent notion that the plants are more important than the herbivore in affecting the composition of the volatile blends. Blends emitted by apple leaves infested with spider mites of 2 different species,T. urticae andP. ulmi, differed less in composition (principally quantitative differences for some compounds) than blends emitted by leaves of two apple cultivars infested by the same spider-mite species,T. urticae (many quantitative and a few qualitative differences). Comparison between three plant species — apple, cucumber and Lima bean — reveals even larger differences between volatile blends emitted upon spider-mite damage (many quantitative differences and several qualitative differences).  相似文献

Freshwater biodiversity has been severely threatened in recent years, and to conserve endangered species, their distribution and breeding habitats need to be clarified. However, identifying breeding sites in a large area is generally difficult. Here, by combining the emerging environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis with subsequent traditional collection surveys, we successfully identified a breeding habitat for the critically endangered freshwater fish Acheilognathus typus in the mainstream of Omono River in Akita Prefecture, Japan, which is one of the original habitats of this species. Based on DNA cytochrome B sequences of A. typus and closely related species, we developed species-specific primers and a probe that were used in real-time PCR for detecting A. typus eDNA. After verifying the specificity and applicability of the primers and probe on water samples from known artificial habitats, eDNA analysis was applied to water samples collected at 99 sites along Omono River. Two of the samples were positive for A. typus eDNA, and thus, small fixed nets and bottle traps were set out to capture adult fish and verify egg deposition in bivalves (the preferred breeding substrate for A. typus) in the corresponding regions. Mature female and male individuals and bivalves containing laid eggs were collected at one of the eDNA-positive sites. This was the first record of adult A. typus in Omono River in 11 years. This study highlights the value of eDNA analysis to guide conventional monitoring surveys and shows that combining both methods can provide important information on breeding sites that is essential for species’ conservation.  相似文献

Several attempts have been made to detect and retrieve fetal nucleated cells including nucleated erythrocytes (NRBCs), leukocytes, and trophoblasts in maternal blood. We have recently developed a new method for non-invasive fetal DNA diagnosis from maternal blood. Peripheral blood granulocytes including NRBCs were isolated by a discontinuous density gradient method using Percoll (Pharmasia). NRBCs were found and retrieved at a single cell level using a micromanipulator under a microscope. To determine whether the origin of the NRBCs was maternal or fetal, the NRBCs were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification to determine the presence of a Y-chromosome-specific repeat sequence in mothers carrying male fetuses. We were successful in predicting fetal sex accurately in 10 out of 11 samples taken from maternal blood. This new technique opens up fetal DNA diagnosis from maternal blood during the first trimester of pregnancy to the whole population because there is no risk to the fetus or the mother.  相似文献

This paper reports CO2 saturation estimations based on resistivity data obtained from laboratory measurements and induction logging results at the Nagaoka pilot CO2 injection site. The laboratory experiments put in evidence that the presence of clay content tends to reduce the increase of resistivity caused by the displacement of brine by less conductive CO2. As a result, CO2 saturations estimated from resistivity measurements without any correction for the clay effect are considerably lower than the actual saturations. The resistivity index (RI) provides better estimates of CO2 saturations than the Archie's equation because it requires the determination or assumption of only one rock parameter: the saturation exponent. CO2 saturations estimated from the induction logging data acquired at Nagaoka are considerably lower than the neutron porosity changes due to displacement between brine and CO2 in the reservoir. Even in the case of considering the De Witte's equation and the Poupon's to account for the clay effect, it was still difficult to get a good agreement with the neutron logging results. New relations based on the resistivity index with correction factors for the clay effect are developed and implemented in this study. One of these relations has proved to be effective to estimate CO2 saturations in saline formations with high clay content.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the relation between chromosomal translocation and the outcome of pregnancy, 50 couples were examined. Subjects consisted of 35 couples that included a reciprocal translocation carrier; 13 included a Robertsonian translocation carrier and 2 included a carrier of a mosaic reciprocal translocation. The reasons for performing chromosomal examinations were mainly infertility and abnormality of neonates. The rates of miscarriages and neonatal abnormalities in prior pregnancies were significantly higher than the birth rate of morphologically normal newborns. The presence of a translocation is closely related to reproductive failure because of the chromosomal imbalance. However, prenatal chromosomal examination after the 15th gestational week in subsequent pregnancies revealed that almost half of the fetuses showed normal karyotypes and only 12.8 per cent of the fetuses showed a chromosomal imbalance. Many chromosomally imbalanced fetuses are spontaneously aborted before amniocentesis. The risk of chromosomal imbalance is relatively low in prenatal diagnosis, but partial trisomies of small rearrangements tend to be preserved.  相似文献

A pilot-scale experiment for carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration was undertaken at the Nagaoka test field in Japan. Time-lapse crosswell seismic tomography was conducted to detect and monitor the movement of CO2 injected into an aquifer. We applied difference analysis with data normalization (DADN) to the time-lapse data to eliminate false images that were apparent in a conventionally processed difference section. Conventional difference analysis calculates travel-time delays after inversion, whereas the DADN method calculates them from raw travel-time records before inversion. Thus, fewer errors are generated with the DADN method compared to a conventional inversion analysis. We applied the DADN method to time-lapse tomography data recorded before and after the injection of CO2 and computed the velocity variation in a subsurface section, which clearly showed the distribution of CO2 flooding within a high permeability zone in the aquifer and showed no CO2 leakage into the caprock. Our results also show the maximum velocity decrease as a result of CO2 injection was about 9%, which is close to the results obtained in laboratory experiments. Finally, numerical simulations were inverted to test the effectiveness of the conventional and DADN methods in dealing with noise. These tests showed that the DADN method effectively reduces unique coherent noise for particular receiver and source combinations. We concluded that the DADN method provides useful data for monitoring the flow of CO2 sequestered in underground aquifers.  相似文献
