The nature of heat coma was examined in the edible periwinkle Littorina littorea (L.). Duration of acclimation did not influence heat-coma temperature at 12 °C, although other acclimation temperatures were
important in influencing thermal tolerance, with positive shifts in coma temperature observed in response to elevated temperatures.
Previous thermal history also influenced heat-coma temperatures. Individuals subjected to repeat heat-coma events on a daily
basis showed significant declines (P < 0.05) in coma-temperature; in contrast individuals exposed to repeat heat-coma events on a weekly basis showed no decline
in thermal tolerance. Size-effects occurred at selected sites, where decreased heat-coma temperatures were recorded in large
individuals.

Although composting has been successfully used at pilot scale to manage waste algae removed from eutrophied water environments and the compost product applied as a fertiliser, clear guidelines are not available for full scale algae composting. The review reports on the application of composting to stabilize waste algae, which to date has mainly been macro-algae, and identifies the peculiarities of algae as a composting feedstock, these being: relatively low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, which can result in nitrogen loss as NH3 and even N2O; high moisture content and low porosity, which together make aeration challenging; potentially high salinity, which can have adverse consequence for composting; and potentially have high metals and toxin content, which can affect application of the product as a fertiliser. Demonstrating intrinsic bioremediation requires not only that the right types of evidence be gathered, but also that those data be analyzed at an appropriate level of detail and presented in a manner that clearly illustrates the key trends to the target audience. The goal of this study was to develop one type of multivariate pattern diagram, the pie diagram, for clearly and efficiently presenting data demonstrating the occurrence of reductive dechlorination at sites contaminated by chlorinated ethenes. The pie diagrams were created using normalized ethenes molar concentrations to estimate and illustrate the changes in the concentrations of contaminants and metabolic intermediates that could be attributed to biodegradative processes. Spatial pie‐diagram maps illustrating the normalized chlorinated‐ethenes data were produced using geographic information system (GIS) software. Application of this visualization tool is demonstrated using an example data set and is compared with a conventional x‐y graph of the data. The trends elucidated on the basis of the pie diagrams, coupled with additional site evidence of natural attenuation (e.g., electron donor and acceptor data), are shown to provide a consistent interpretation of the site data. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Three urban runoff models, namely, the Road Research Laboratory Model (RRLM), the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and the University of Cincinnati Urban Runoff Model (UCURM), were examined by comparing the model simulated hydrographs with the hydrographs measured on several instrumented urban watersheds. This comparison was done for the hydrograph peak points as well as for the entire hydrographs using such statistical measures as the correlation coefficient, the special correlation coefficient and the integral square error. The results of the study indicated that, when applying the three selected non-calibrated models on small urban catchments, the SWM model performed marginally better than the RRL model and both these models were more accurate than the UCUR model. On larger watersheds, the comparisons between the SWM model and the other two models would be likely even more favourable for the SWM model, because it has the most advanced flow routing scheme among the studied models. 相似文献

Phylum-level meta-analysis was applied to 192 samples from a variety of dredgings disposal and relocation sites around the
coast of England and Wales. No consistent relationship was found between the disturbance status of macrobenthic communities
within disposal sites and the nature or amount of dredgings disposed. Differences between samples within and outside disposal
sites were generally smaller than differences between different sites and various patterns of impact were detected. It is
concluded that dredgings disposal has two contrasting impacts on benthic communities. One, associated with organic enrichment,
leads to communities dominated by annelids and nematodes. The other, associated with intense physical disturbance, favours
large motile or armoured forms, such as bivalve molluscs and crustaceans. These effects may act antagonistically, and in a
phylum-level meta-analysis may cancel each other out. None of the samples examined from offshore disposal sites was grossly
disturbed, in terms of the proportional contribution to production from different phyla, and overall most samples ranged from
moderately disturbed to undisturbed. The ecological impacts associated with the intertidal placement of material (beneficial

The work highlights the difficulties of using standard sampling and statistical techniques to investigate regional phenomena and presents an integrated approach combining small-scale sampling with broad-scale observations to provide input into a modeling exercise. It is suggested that such approaches are vital if landscape- and regional-scale processes are to be understood and managed. The way in which the problem is perceived (holistically or piecemeal) affects the way treatments are designed and their effectiveness: past approaches have failed to integrate the various scales and processes involved.
