Radioisotopes have been misused extensively by ecologists in transfer studies within food chains. Unless it is known that no recycling of isotope has occurred during the experiment, the assumption of linear uptake when in fact the system is not linear, even over short periods, can lead to significant errors in the estimation of ingestion or feeding. If recycling occurs, at least a 3 or 4-compartment, hydraulic-type model is necessary to even approximate the complicated kinetics of isotopic transfer in a simple aquatic feeding experiment. In any event, it is essential to follow the uptake or loss of an isotope (change in specific activity) as a function of time in at least 1 compartment before deciding on an appropriate model. If experiments are designed so that the maximum number of rate processes are summed or integrated by the animal, the kinetics can be considerably simplified. If the food supply is uniformly labelled, the rate of change of tracer can be used to give a rate of ingestion (grazing). If the predator is labelled with a suitable isotope before starting the experiment, the rate of loss of its isotope burden under different experimental conditions can be used to determine respiration or excretion rates, turnover rates, ingestion, and the size and number of major compartments in the transfer system.Bedford Institute Contribution. Patterns of connectivity are important in understanding the geographic scale of local adaptation in marine populations. While natural selection can lead to local adaptation, high connectivity can diminish the potential for such adaptation to occur. Connectivity, defined as the exchange of individuals among subpopulations, is presumed to be significant in most marine species due to life histories that include widely dispersive stages. However, evidence of local adaptation in marine species, such the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, raises questions concerning the degree of connectivity. We examined geochemical signatures in the otoliths, or ear bones, of adult Atlantic silversides collected in 11 locations along the northeastern coast of the United States from New Jersey to Maine in 2004 and eight locations in 2005 using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometry (irm-MS). These signatures were then compared to baseline signatures of juvenile fish of known origin to determine natal origin of these adult fish. We then estimated migration distances and the degree of mixing from these data. In both years, fish generally had the highest probability of originating from the same location in which they were captured (0.01-0.80), but evidence of mixing throughout the sample area was present. Furthermore, adult M. menidia exhibit highly dispersive behavior with some fish migrating over 700 km. The probability of adult fish returning to natal areas differed between years, with the probability being, on average, 0.2 higher in the second year. These findings demonstrate that marine species with largely open populations are capable of local adaptation despite apparently high gene flow.  相似文献

In an intensive study (lasting 25 h) of the production, export and grazing of phytoplankton in a small marine basin, it was found that 58% of the production (11% of the total standing stock) was lost by exchange with the sea and 34% was consumed by grazing of zooplankton. The measured production of phytoplankton could be balanced, to within a few percent, against grazing, export, and a small, measured, net change in the total standing stock of the basin. Large variations were observed in concentrations of chlorophyll and zooplankton at the mouth of the basin over the 25 h period. These variations were associated with changes in the height of the tide, but were about 21/2 h out of phase with it. Strong negative correlations were observed between chlorophyll and transport, such that only 35% of the chlorophyll exported was exchanged via the mean flow, while 65% was exchanged via the fluctuations. The correlation was even more striking with zooplankton, for which virtually all the export was associated with the fluctuations in the transport. Time series observations in the centre of the basin revealed considerable short-term variability in both chlorophyll and zooplankton, but the variations were smaller than those observed at the mouth of the basin, and the phase lag with the tide was longer. The variability studies enable suggestions to be made about more economical design of sampling programs, but illustrate the difficulty of providing verification data for any continuous model of primary production in such a basin.Bedford Institute Contribution No. 231.Canadian Contribution to IBP No. 97.  相似文献

Spring diatom flowerings in Bedford Basin, Nova Scotia, almost exhausted the available nitrogen supplies. The supply of nitrate appeared to regulate the magnitude of the bloom. Other nutrient supplies may also have been limiting. Certain alterations in quantities of major metabolites could be interpreted in terms of nitrogen limitation. Nitrate, (nitrite), and ammonium were generally utilized simultaneously by Thalassiosira nordenskioldii, the dominant bloom organism. This species did not effectively utilize urea in either laboratory culture or in the natural environment. T. fluviatilis simultaneously utilized all nitrogen sources provided in laboratory experiments simulating natural nutrient conditions.  相似文献

The coastal marine environment of the Northwest Atlantic contains strong environmental gradients that create distinct marine biogeographic provinces by limiting dispersal, recruitment, and survival. This region has also been subjected to numerous Pleistocene glacial cycles, resulting in repeated extirpations and recolonizations in northern populations of marine organisms. In this study, we examined patterns of genetic structure and historical demography in the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, an annual marine fish with high dispersal potential but with well-documented patterns of clinal phenotypic adaptation along the environmental gradients of the Northwest Atlantic. Contrary to previous studies indicating genetic homogeneity that should preclude regional adaptation, results demonstrate subtle but significant (F ST = 0.07; P < 0.0001) genetic structure among three phylogeographic regions that partially correspond with biogeographic provinces, suggesting regional limits to gene flow. Tests for non-equilibrium population dynamics and latitudinal patterns in genetic diversity indicate northward population expansion from a single southern refugium following the last glacial maximum, suggesting that phylogeographic and phenotypic patterns have relatively recent origins. The recovery of phylogeographic structure and the partial correspondence of these regions to recognized biogeographic provinces suggest that the environmental gradients that shape biogeographic patterns in the Northwest Atlantic may also limit gene flow in M. menidia, creating phylogeographic structure and contributing to the creation of latitudinal phenotypic clines in this species.  相似文献

Small or negligible differences in growth rates, average cell size, yields in cell numbers and total cell volumes were found in cultures of Thalassiosira fluviatilis inriched with nitrate, ammonium, or urea. Intracellular pools of unassimilated nitrate, nitrate, and ammonium were found in nutrient-rich conditions, but urea was not accumlated internally. Nitrogen assimilation into organic combination rather than nitrogen nutrient uptake was a critical rate-limiting step in nitrogen utilization. The free amino acid pool, protein, lipid-associated nitrogen, pigments, and total cell nitrogen were all highest in young or mature phase cells and decreased with age in senescent cells, whereas chitan, lipid, carbohydrate, and total cellular carbon all continued to increase during senescence. Dissolved organic nitrogen compounds accumulated in the medium only during senescence. C:N and lipid:protein were sensitive indicators of nitrogen depletion and age in T. fluviatilis.  相似文献

Observations on breeding season, copulation, spawning, and development are described for Paedoclione doliiformis, the only gymnosomatous pteropod which consistently retains external larval features throughout its life. The number of eggs spawned per individual is dependent upon temperature and availability of Spiratella retroversa, its thecosome prey. At 17° to 19°C, planktotrophic veligers hatch from floating egg masses within 3 days, and cast their shells approximately 11 days later. The resultant shell-less veligers could complete metamorphosis to the polytrochous larval stage, in which the body is encircled by 3 ciliary bands, within 12 h. Some polytrochous larvae begin feeding on veligers of S. retroversa within 2 days. Unlike other gymnosome species, there is no further change in external appearance except for growth. A comparison of reproduction and development has been made with Clione limacina, another gymnosome which competes for food with P. doliiformis in Nova Scotian (Canada) coastal waters.  相似文献

We examine how social relationships are related to pro-environment behaviors. We use new data from a nationally representative US sample to estimate latent cluster models in which we describe individuals' profiles of social ties with family, neighbor, and coworkers along two dimensions: intensity of connections and pro-environment norms. While our results confirm the link between social ties and economic behaviors, we show that ties among relatives, neighbors, and coworkers are not perfect substitutes. In particular, we observe consistent relationships between green family profiles and altruistic and community-based behaviors. We also find that the effect of coworker ties is visible for cost-saving activities and altruistic behaviors, and that neighbors matter for working with others in the community to solve a local problem, volunteering, and recycling.  相似文献
