Chemical treatments are widely employed to improve the fiber-matrix adhesion in composites based on eco-friendly fibers such as flax. To better understand the influence of these treatments on processing behavior, this study characterized the surface chemistry and morphology of woven flax fabrics treated by acetone, alkaline, silane and diluted epoxy. Flax/epoxy composites were then manufactured by resin infusion and the flow front and preform thickness evolution was monitored. The alkaline treatment was shown to result in a 50 % increase in equivalent permeability due to an increase in porosity which led to a decrease in flexural properties. The processing results were found to be in good agreement with predictions of a 1-dimensional model. This study suggests that infusion times are not considerably affected by the observed changes in surface energy. However, other implications of the treatments such as an increase in fibrillation can alter the infusion times significantly.
Guira cuckoos, Guira guira, exhibit a rare polygynandrous reproductive system with groups containing several male and female breeders, allowing for important tests of reproductive skew models. Female reproductive strategies involve leaving the group, varying clutch size, egg ejection and infanticide, among others. Here we examined the predictions of reproductive skew models relative to reproductive partitioning among females in groups. We used yolk protein electrophoresis to identify individual females eggs in joint nests. We found that reproductive partitioning favors early-laying females, which lay and incubate more eggs than females that begin laying later. Because the female that lays first tends to switch between repeated nesting bouts, and females do not always contribute eggs to each bout, female reproductive success tends to equalize within groups over time. The pattern of reproductive partitioning differs from that described for anis, another crotophagine joint-nester. We calculated reproductive skew indices for groups in 2 years, for both laying and incubation, as well as an overall population value. These were compared to random skew generated by simulations. Varying degrees of skew were found for different groups, and also across sequential nesting bouts of the same groups. Overall, however, skew did not deviate from random within the population. Nests that reached incubation tended to have lower skew values during the laying phase than nests terminated due to ejection of all eggs followed by desertion. Groups had higher reproductive skew indices in their first nesting bout of the season, and these nests frequently failed. These results illustrate the importance of social organization in determining not only individual, but group success in reproduction, and highlight the flexibility of vertebrate social behavior.Communicated by J. The sexy son hypothesis suggests that females obtain future fitness benefits from mating with polygynous males through the inheritance by their sons of traits contributing to mating success. We tested this hypothesis in the facultatively polygynous European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) in two ways. We first compared sons of monogynous and polygynous free-living males for their abilities in nest site acquisition and female-directed behaviors in controlled aviary tests. We then investigated eggs laid in monogynous and polygynous matings for concentrations of maternal steroid hormones that could affect behavioral differentiation of sons. Sons of polygynous fathers defended more nest boxes and produced more courtship song than sons of monogynous fathers. Mean concentrations of maternal androstenedione (A4), 5-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), testosterone (T), and 17-estradiol (E) in yolks were not affected by mating status. However, the within-clutch pattern of A4 depended on mating status, with higher concentrations in last than in first eggs of clutches of monogynous but not polygynous matings. These results suggest that (1) sons may inherit from their fathers behavioral qualities for the successful acquisition of nest sites and attraction of mates; (2) differential exposure to maternal steroid hormones during development in the egg is unlikely the cause of the behavioral differences between adult sons of monogynous and polygynous fathers; and (3) females adjust the within-clutch pattern of androgen to mating status, possibly in response to the expected contribution of their mate to nestling care. 相似文献
In the ongoing discussions about the qualities of Germany regarding economic activities and especially industrial production in a unifying Europe and with respect to worldwide economic competition, it is important to carefully consider the conditions for innovative and competitive scientific research. Germany as a site for science is dependent not only on the resources of public research institutes, on available research funds and on industrial R&D investment, but just as decisively on the existing framework of conditions for scientific-technological progress. Thus, the whole educational system is of utmost importance since it must form and develop the coming generations of researchers. Their knowledge and their attitudes, as acquired in this educational process, determine not only their future scientific productivity, but also the public acceptance of high-tech production in Germany. 相似文献
