When combined in the lining and covering of waste-containment facilities, soil and geosynthetic components protect the environment by acting as a hydraulic barrier. Equipment loading may significantly increase the tensile stress induced in geosynthetic components, leading to a potential stability problem. Large equipment loadings may also result in a localized circular slip surface during construction operations. New analytical method based on discrete element modelling is proposed for estimating the distribution of tensile force developed in the individual geosynthetic components of the lining system and for evaluating the safety factor of slope failure due to equipment loading. The analytical results of an example are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the analytical method for the lining system of a waste landfill. The analyses of the example show that equipment loading provide a substantial increase in the tensile forces of the geosynthetic components of a lining system and that the possibility of shallow failure due to equipment loading increases as the slope becomes steeper. This method is a useful tool for analysing the lining system of waste landfills with complex lining components. 相似文献

Polycaprolactone (PCL) powders were prepared from PCL pellets using a rotation mechanical mixer. PCL powders were separated
by sieves with 60 and 120 meshes into four classes; 0–125 μm, 125–250 μm, 0–250 μm and 250–500 μm. Biodegradation tests of
PCL powders and cellulose powders in an aqueous solution at 25°C were performed using the coulometer according to ISO 14851.
Biodegradation tests of PCL powders and cellulose powders in controlled compost at 58°C were performed by the Mitsui Chemical
Analysis and Consulting Service, Inc. according to ISO 14855-1 and by using the Microbial Oxidative Degradation Analyzer (MODA)
instrument according to ISO/DIS 14855-2. PCL powders were faster biodegraded than cellulose powders. The reproducibility of
biodegradation of PCL powders is excellent. Differences in the biodegradation of PCL powders with different class were not
observed by the ISO 14851 and ISO/DIS 14855-2. An enzymatic degradation test of PCL powders with different class was studied
using an enzyme of Amano Lipase PS. PCL with smaller particle size was faster degraded by the enzyme. PCL powders with regulated sizes from 125 μm to 250 μm

A swarm of honeybees provides a striking example of an animal group performing a synchronized departure for a new location;
in this case, thousands of bees taking off at once to fly to a new home. However, the means by which this is achieved remain
unclear. Shortly before takeoff, one hears a crescendo of a high-pitched mechanical signal—worker piping—so we explored the
role of this signal in coordinating a swarm’s mass takeoff. Specifically, we examined whether exclusively nest site scouts
produce the worker piping signal or whether it is produced in a relay or chain reaction fashion. We found no evidence that
bees other than the scouts that have visited the swarm’s chosen nest site produce piping signals. This absence of relay communication
in piping suggests that it is a signal that only primes swarms for takeoff and that the release of takeoff is triggered by
some other signal or cue; perhaps the takeoff of bees on the swarm periphery as they reach flight temperature in response

Understanding the origin of disease resistance in social insects is difficult due to the lack of well-established phylogenies
of presocial and eusocial species and the absence of extant basal and intermediate forms. Moreover, comprehensive accounts
of infection-control traits in social insect lineages are not available. Therefore, to explore the evolution of pathogen control
in social insects we used cellular automata models to analyze the efficacy of immunity and nest hygiene, which we assumed
were basal traits, and allogrooming, which likely followed the transition to eusociality, and their interactions with colony
demography and patterns of worker spatial distribution. Models showed that nest hygiene provided an immediate survival benefit
and that immunity lowered overall disease susceptibility under both constant and periodic exposure scenarios. Allogrooming
increased survivorship in chronically challenged colonies but also increased pathogen transmission rates under conditions
of periodic exposure. Colonies having demographies biased towards young or old individuals had slightly higher mortality than
those with heterogeneous demographies. The distribution of older individuals relative to the nest center had no significant
effect on susceptibility and provided only a minor survival advantage. Models indicated that nest hygiene and immunity function
on different temporal scales and can interact with demography to lower disease risks. Our results suggest how infection control
systems in social insects could have been built upon the inducible immune defenses and nest hygienic behaviors of solitary
and presocial ancestors and served as important preadaptations to manage disease exposure and transmission in colonies of

This study comprises two essential components: a scoping review and interviews with fishermen, both aimed at understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance to Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) enterprises, particularly in mitigating impacts on local fisheries. Key findings from the scoping review indicate a scarcity of research explicitly dedicated to OWE enterprises' practices concerning. The review's findings emphasize the need for further research to understand the rationale behind these decisions and to explore how OWE enterprises can optimize their practices to address SDG 2. The second part of the study involves interviews with fishermen near proposed offshore wind farm sites in Taiwan. These interviews revealed that fishermen's primary concerns revolve around SDGs 2, 8, 14, and 17. However, OWE enterprises do not prioritize SDG 2, even though fishermen express concerns related to food security, proposing the adoption of marine ranching to enhance seafood supply. Moreover, SDG 17 stands out as a priority for fishermen, while OWE enterprises overlook connections with fisheries associations and fishermen. In conclusion, this study highlights the complexity of the SDG-related issues surrounding OWE enterprises and their impact on local fisheries. 相似文献

We performed male attraction experiments and staged courtship sequences to test for non-random mating with respect to social
behavioral phenotype in the comb-footed spider, Anelosimus studiosus. While asocial behavior is the dominant phenotype in all A. studiosus populations examined to date, a social phenotype approaches a frequency of 15% in colder environments. We collected test
subjects from higher latitude polymorphic populations and scored all individuals as to their behavioral phenotype prior to
their use in these trials. Males of both phenotypes differentially approached and courted social females over asocial females
and no-spider controls. By offering males different numbers of females of one type vs. the other in subsequent trials, we
determined that the difference in attractiveness between the two phenotypes social/asocial is 1.5/1. Both the web produced
by a female and a female that has been removed from its web attract males. We suggest that the male attracting pheromone is
present on females and is also attached to silk threads. Staged encounters completed between males and females of the respective
phenotypes demonstrated that courting males suffer significantly less pre-copulatory sexual cannibalism with social females
than with asocial ones, and thus, female social tendency is phenotypically linked to sexual aggression. We propose that the
male preference for social females is adaptive because of the observed asymmetry in courtship success. 相似文献

Females are expected to vary investment in offspring according to variables that may influence the offspring fitness in a way that optimises her inclusive fitness for a particular context. Thus, when sexual ornaments signal the quality of the male, females might invest in reproduction as a function of the attractiveness of their mate. We tested whether breeding conditions and male feet colour influence reproductive decisions of blue-footed booby females. In the blue-footed booby, male feet colour is a dynamic condition-dependent sexually selected trait that is related to paternal effort. During two consecutive years, an El Niño year (poor breeding conditions) and a year with good breeding conditions, we experimentally reduced male attractiveness by modifying their feet colour after the first egg was laid and recorded female investment in the second egg. We found that, relative to the first egg in the clutch, females laid heavier second eggs during the poor year than during the good year. Females paired with males with duller feet colour reduced second-egg mass and volume and delayed the laying of the second egg, independently of the year. Absolute yolk androstenedione (A4) concentration (but not testosterone, T) in second eggs was higher during a poor year than during a good year. Only during a year with poor breeding conditions, females paired with experimental males decreased the relative A4 concentration (but not T) in the second egg compared to control females. Thus, blue-footed booby females probably favour brood reduction by decreasing egg quality and increasing size asymmetry between chicks when the breeding and the mate conditions are poor. 相似文献

Ectinus aterrimus (L.) is a fairly common European click beetle species which develops mainly in forests. In pheromone gland extracts of female
E. aterrimus, examined using gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS), one single compound was present. This was identified as 7-methyloctyl
9-methyldecanoate by comparison with a synthetic sample. Field trapping trials revealed a highly significant attraction of

In order to clarify the historic academic problem of whether or not livestock poisoning in ancient Suzhou of Northwest China, recorded by Marco Polo in 1295, was selenosis, this study deals with the biogeochemistry of selenium in Sunan County in the Hexi Corridor, which is part of ancient Suzhou in China. It was found that quite a number of farm animals had suffered from intoxication and died as a result of grazing poisonous grasses, mostly Oxytropis DC, Stellera chamaejasme, and Achnatheru inebrians. Toxic symptoms of livestock grazing on Oxytropis DC are similar to those of selenium toxicity, for instance, hair loss and hoof lesions as described by Marco Polo. Therefore, we thought that toxic grass, probably Oxytropis DC, led to the intoxication of livestock recorded by Marco Polo. Average Se concentrations in two members of this species were 0.112 +/- 0.038 mg/kg for the root of Oxytropis glabra, 0.102 +/- 0.027 mg/kg for the stem and leaf of Oxytropis glabra, and 0.066 +/- 0.009 mg/kg for Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average soil selenium concentration was 0.205 +/- 0.127 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis glabra and 0.152 +/- 0.024 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average Se concentration in other plants was 0.076 mg/kg in the root of Ephedra monosperma Mey, 0.029 mg/kg in the root of Rheum palmatum, 0.031 mg/kg in the root of Stellera chamaejasme, 0.037 mg/kg in Achnatherum inebrians, and 0.067 mg/kg in forage grass (Achnatherum splendens ohwi). Selenium concentrations in soils and plants in Sunan County are far less than the thresholds causing selenium toxicity in livestock. As a result, this study concludes that the livestock poisoning recorded by Marco Polo in 1295 might not have been selenosis. 相似文献

All honeybee species make use of the waggle dance to communicate the direction and distance to both food sources and potential
new nest sites. When foraging, all species face an identical problem: conveying information about profitable floral patches.
However, profound differences in nesting biology (some nest in cavities while others nest in the open, often on a branch or
a cliff face) may mean that species have different requirements when dancing to advertise new nest sites. In cavity nesting
species, nest sites are a precise location in the landscape: usually a small opening leading to a cavity in a hollow tree.
Dances for cavities therefore need to be as precise as possible. In contrast, when the potential nest site comprises a tree
or perhaps seven a patch of trees, precision is less necessary. Similarly, when a food patch is advertised, dances need not
be very precise, as floral patches are often large, unless they are so far away that recruits need more precise information
to be able to locate them. In this paper, we study the dance precision of the open-nesting red dwarf bee Apis florea. By comparing the precision of dances for food sources and nest sites, we show that A. florea workers dance with the same imprecision irrespective of context. This is in sharp contrast with the cavity-nesting Apis mellifera that increases the precision of its dance when advertising a potential new home. We suggest that our results are in accordance
with the hypothesis that the honeybees’ dance communication initially evolved to convey information about new nest sites and
