Wild rodents were collected using live snap traps in pistachio gardens of Kerman Province, Southeast Iran from 2007 to 2009, then some physiological parameters of them were measured. The samples were identified as follow: Nesokia indica, Meriones persicus, Meriones lybicus and Tatera indica. Blood samples were obtained from the heart, then the blood parameters (glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, HDL, red and white blood cell number) in wild species of rodents and laboratory rat were compared. The results showed that there were no significant differences in serum glucose, triglyceride, HDL and total protein levels among different experimental groups. The concentration of cholesterol in T. indica was more than that in N. indica (P < 0.01). The total numbers of red blood cells also showed significant difference between wild garden rodent species and laboratory rat (P < 0.01), while the numbers of white blood cells showed no significant difference.  相似文献

Searlesia dira Reeve is a locally abundant, carnivorous gastropod that occurs from Alaska to central California. I studied populations of this snail at a variety of sites on San Juan Island in order to provide information on their distribution and abundance and to analyze their community role, i.e., their potential impact on their prey populations and their dietary overlap with co-occurring invertebrate predators. I established permanent transects, both random and in crevices, at three areas of differing exposure to wave action. On these transects I recorded the number and size ofS. dira, activity, distance to nearest neighbor, other organisms present, and tidal height on four phases of the mixed semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The results are (1) an increase in density with increase in substrate relief, (2) an occurrence of highest densities in moderately exposed and exposed sites rather than in protected ones, (3) an increase in mean size with increase in depth along the intertidal gradient, (4) an increase in both total activity and feeding success on the high water immediately following an extreme minus low tide occurring during the daytime in the summer, (5) a relative restriction of feeding success to that high tide, and (6) a similarity of the diet to the relative abundance of the main observed prey for most areas. The main exceptions are chitons and one lower intertidal limpet, all of which are taken in excess of their apparent abundance and especially in the middle intertidal. The upward extension of some lower intertidal prey populations, such as chitons, may be limited by the increased susceptibility of individuals at the upper margin of the population to predators such asS. dira; susceptibility appears to be increased after periods with a higher probability of increased physiological stress, such as extreme low tides on summer days.  相似文献

Studies of biogeographic variation in species abundances are fundamental to understanding and predicting the impacts of invasive exotic species. We quantified the abundance of the introduced and now invasive biocontrol weevil, Rhinocyllus conicus, on a newly adopted native host plant, Cirsium canescens (Platte thistle), across the plant's distributional range. We used regression and structural equation analyses to examine variation in weevil abundance at 92-108 sites over three years in relation to variation in abiotic and biotic parameters hypothesized to be important in insect or plant dynamics and distribution. We found that R. conicus now occurs throughout the majority of the range of C. canescens, even in the center of the native plant's distribution where its coevolved, targeted weed host (Carduus nutans, musk thistle) is absent. In fact, weevil densities were greater in the center of the native plant's distribution in the Sand Hills formation than in peripheral sand patches closer to areas where the targeted 'exotic thistle is common. None of the macroclimatic variables examined were consistent predictors of the large-scale variation in weevil abundance on C. canescens. In addition to biogeographic position, the only other consistent predictor of weevil densities across sites was the number of flower heads per C. canescens plant. These results exclude the "spillover" hypothesis to explain nontarget feeding on this newly adopted native host species. Instead, the results are consistent with the alternative hypothesis that exotic weevil abundance on C. canescens is related to the local availability of native floral resources. Because C. canescens densities have declined with increases in R. conicus at sites central in the plant's distribution, these results suggest that isolated, peripheral populations of C. canescens are likely to be critical for persistence of Platte thistle. More generally, this study suggests that the persistence of a native species that is impacted by an exotic natural enemy may require preservation of populations in habitats outside the optimal portion of the native species' distribution.  相似文献

Theory predicts that damage by a shared herbivore to a secondary host plant species may either be higher or lower in the vicinity of a preferred host plant species. To evaluate the importance of ecological factors, such as host plant proximity and density, in determining the direction and strength of such herbivore-mediated indirect effects, we quantified oviposition by the exotic weevil Rhinocyllus conicus on the native wavyleaf thistle Cirsium undulatum in midgrass prairie on loam soils in the upper Great Plains, USA. Over three years (2001-2003), the number of eggs laid by R. conicus on C. undulatum always decreased significantly with distance (0-220 m) from a musk thistle (Carduus nutans L.) patch. Neither the level of R. conicus oviposition on C. undulatum nor the strength of the distance effect was predicted by local musk thistle patch density or by local C. undulatum density (<5 m). The results suggest that high R. conicus egg loads on C. undulatum near musk thistle resulted from the native thistle's co-occurrence with the coevolved preferred exotic host plant and not from the weevil's response to local host plant density. Mean egg loads on C. undulatum also were greater at sites with higher R. conicus densities. We conclude that both preferred-plant proximity and shared herbivore density strongly affected the herbivore-mediated indirect interaction, suggesting that such interactions are important pathways by which invasive exotic weeds can indirectly impact native plants.  相似文献

Protection from Natural Enemies in Managing Rare Plant Species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: Natural enemies such as pathogens, herbivores, and seed predators can substantially limit the abundance of plants, including rare species. Vulnerability to particular enemies is likely to differ between life-history stages. We hypothesized that short-term protection of juvenile plants from herbivores can be used to increase population growth of rare species and thus improve the probability of long-term persistence. Using the federally listed (threatened) Pitcher's thistle ( Cirsium pitcheri ) as a model, we experimentally excluded insect herbivores from juvenile rosettes to evaluate the potential benefits of deliberate insect control as a tool for management of rare species. Herbivore effects varied spatially across the local environment. Excluding insects in portions of the habitat where herbivory was high had direct benefits, including a 53% decrease in juvenile plant mortality (60% to 7%) and a 10-fold increase in seed production of juveniles that matured and flowered. In other areas, where herbivore-induced juvenile mortality was relatively low, excluding insects either increased seed production of plants that flowered or had no major effect. Our data also suggest indirect benefits to the metapopulation via potential improvement in dispersal among patches. Temporal variation in growing conditions occurred between years, suggesting that multiple-year exclusions would be most effective. Our study suggests that small–scale manipulation of often inconspicuous interactions between rare plants and their natural enemies can be an effective, relatively low-cost tool for the management and restoration of rare plant species.  相似文献

Comparisons of Related Rare and Common Species in the Study of Plant Rarity   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract: Conservation of rare plant populations is an important dimension of the preservation of biodiversity. Yet the database underlying both the theoretical understanding and management of rare—in contrast to common—plant species is scattered, unfocused, and conceptually weak. Our review of studies comparing attributes of rare vascular plants with those of closely related, more common relatives found fewer studies than expected ( n = 38) and no consistency in the attributes measured, which precluded further assessment of pattern. Only 10% of 71 response variables compared were reported in more than four studies, and most of the traits ( 79%) were compared in only one or two studies. Improvement of comparisons of rare and common species requires standardization of attributes measured among studies. Although experiments evaluating hypothesized limiting factors are desirable, at a minimum all studies should include population densities and life table schedules. Demographic parameters provide detailed data, required for scientific management of specific rare plants, and extensive data, required for meta-analyses and detection of general patterns in rarity.  相似文献

A current challenge in ecology is to better understand the magnitude, variation, and interaction in the factors that limit the invasiveness of exotic species. We conducted a factorial experiment involving herbivore manipulation (insecticide-in-water vs. water-only control) and seven densities of introduced nonnative Cirsium vulgare (bull thistle) seed. The experiment was repeated with two seed cohorts at eight grassland sites uninvaded by C. vulgare in the central Great Plains, USA. Herbivory by native insects significantly reduced thistle seedling density, causing the largest reductions in density at the highest propagule inputs. The magnitude of this herbivore effect varied widely among sites and between cohort years. The combination of herbivory and lower propagule pressure increased the rate at which new C. vulgare populations failed to establish during the initial stages of invasion. This experiment demonstrates that the interaction between biotic resistance by native insects, propagule pressure, and spatiotemporal variation in their effects were crucial to the initial invasion by this Eurasian plant in the western tallgrass prairie.  相似文献
