Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contaminate 19% of US Superfund sites and represent a serious risk to human and environmental health. One promising strategy to remediate PCB-contaminated sediments utilizes organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) that dechlorinate PCBs.
However, functional genes that act as biomarkers for PCB dechlorination processes (i.e., reductive dehalogenase genes) are poorly understood. Here, we developed anaerobic sediment microcosms that harbor an OHRB community dominated by the genus Dehalococcoides. During the 430-day microcosm incubation, Dehalococcoides 16S rRNA sequences increased two orders of magnitude to 107 copies/g of sediment, and at the same time, PCB118 decreased by as much as 70%. In addition, the OHRB community dechlorinated a range of penta- and tetra-chlorinated PCB congeners including PCBs 66, 70?+?74?+?76, 95, 90?+?101, and PCB110 without exogenous electron donor. We quantified candidate reductive dehalogenase (RDase) genes over a 430-day incubation period and found rd14, a reductive dehalogenase that belongs to Dehalococcoides mccartyi strain CG5, was enriched to 107 copies/g of sediment. At the same time, pcbA5 was enriched to only 105 copies/g of sediment. A survey for additional RDase genes revealed sequences similar to strain CG5’s rd4 and rd8. In addition to demonstrating the PCB dechlorination potential of native microbial communities in contaminated freshwater sediments, our results suggest candidate functional genes with previously unexplored potential could serve as biomarkers of PCB dechlorination processes.
Indicators are a key component of resource management, but selecting them can be difficult and controversial. This study explores different methods for selecting impact indicators for management of trail conditions by comparing photo survey methods (PSM) with written survey methods (WSM). A total of 661 subjects participated in interviews conducted within Mudeung- Mountain Provincial Park in Kwang-ju, Korea. PSM explained variation in acceptability better than WSM. Six major photo components (in order of importance: area of large rocks on trail, area of wood steps, area of bare roots, area of bare soil, area of small stones, and area of stone steps) explained 84.7% of the variation in acceptability of trail management conditions. This study suggests that PSM can be a useful tool for selecting impact indicators.

People receive information about visiting places from a variety of sources, and it is important to understand how information
affects recreation experiences. This study examines how different information treatments describing a recreation place influence
perceived crowding and encounter norms. The study location was the Jungmoeri area of Mudeungsan Provincial Park (MPP) in Korea.
Data were collected from 50 college students utilizing a series of simulated moving pictures in a laboratory setting. Respondents
were given information describing three different types of conditions and experiences (nature preserve, transition/buffer,
and developed area), plus a no information control. Results showed that information influenced perceived crowding and encounter
norms. For the range of encounter numbers depicted in the photos, the nature preserve treatment produced higher crowding ratings
and lower tolerances for encounters, the developed area treatment produced lower crowding ratings and higher tolerances, and
the transition/buffer and the control were in between. Information treatments also influence the perceived importance of encounter
numbers, and importance was highest for the nature preserve. Management implications are discussed. 相似文献
This paper tests an equilibrium condition from a model that incorporates: (1) altruism of parents toward their young children, and (2) household production of latent health risks. The model demonstrates that an altruistic parent's marginal rate of substitution between an environmental health risk to herself and to her child is equal to the ratio of marginal risk reduction costs. Econometric estimates support this prediction based on data from a stated preference survey involving 488 parents of children aged 3–12 years. This outcome implies that parents reallocate family resources to at least partly offset the effectiveness of public programs that aim to reduce their children's environmental risks. 相似文献
/ This study was conducted to examine norm prevalence, norm agreement, and norm stability in an international setting. Data were collected at two campgrounds in Chiri-Mountain National Park, Korea, in 1993 and 1994. Results showed that a high proportion of users could specify norms for various types of campground impacts. Users who rated high importance on impacts tended to show a higher level of norm prevalence. Generally there were differences in social norms and norm agreement across locations. Among those impacts that showed differences, social norms in a less developed area were more restrictive and norm agreement was higher. The results of this study are consistent with normative studies conducted in North America, suggesting that a normative approach can be applied in a variety of settings. Social norms for selected impact indicators were also stable over a one-year time period. Implications are discussed.KEY WORDS: Norms; Norm prevalence; Norm agreement; Norm stability 相似文献
Managed forests are increasingly being used for recreation. As a result, foresters may be expected to tailor silvicultural treatments to accommodate specific recreation preferences. To better understand changes in hiking and camping quality in the years following a harvest, six sites on the Oregon State University's research forest were evaluated annually for 11 years. Multiple comparison and regression analyses were used to describe the data. Results show that recreation ratings generally improved over time; recreation ratings were related to but different from scenic ratings; and there were differences among recreation activities. Although several studies have previously examined recreation quality after harvest, we know of no other study that has tracked the ratings of individual harvest units through the early stages of stand regeneration. 相似文献
Soundscapes in recreation settings are becoming an important issue, but there are few studies of the effects of sounds on
recreation experiences, especially crowding perceptions and encounter norms. This study compared effects of six types of sounds
(an airplane, a truck engine, children playing, birds, water, and a control) on perceived crowding (PC) and encounter norms
for hikers. Data were collected from 47 college students through lab experiments using simulated images, with moving hikers
inserted in the original photo taken in the Jungmeori area of Mudeungsan Provincial Park in Korea. Overall, the motor-made
sounds of the airplane and truck engine increased PC and decreased acceptability ratings, and the natural sounds of birds
and water decreased PC and increased acceptability ratings. Ratings of the sound of children playing were similar to those
in the control (i.e., no sound). In addition, as numbers of hikers increased, the overall effects of sounds decreased, and
there were few significant differences in PC or acceptability ratings at the highest encounter levels. Theoretical and methodological
implications are discussed. 相似文献
This study examined the comparability of onsite and offsite methods for measuring norms for trail impacts using photo/survey
techniques. A total of 449 subjects participated in a study of Mudeung-Mountain Provincial Park, Gwang-Ju, Korea. For the
overall photo evaluation method (OPEM), respondents rated the acceptability of bare soil area for each of a series of photographs.
For the specific photo evaluation method (SPEM), respondents selected a photograph that illustrated the largest acceptable
proportion of bare soil area from a series of 10 photographs. Overall, there were no substantial differences in maximum acceptable
impacts between onsite (onsite-I visitor group surveyed at the actual trail points and onsite-II departing visitor group surveyed
at the exit area) and offsite (students surveyed in a laboratory setting) groups for the two norm measurement alternatives
(OPEM and SPEM). Subjects’ difficulty ratings were low for both methods, and there were no substantial differences in norms
between individuals with high and low levels of experience at the park. The offsite method appears to be substitutable for
onsite methods in this particular study area, which is a frontcountry setting with a relatively simple range of recreation
opportunities. Implications and further studies are discussed. 相似文献
This paper develops and applies an integrated model of mortality and morbidity valuation that is consistent with the principles of welfare economics. To obtain the integrated model, the standard one-period expected utility model of one person facing the prospect of either being alive or dead is extended to incorporate (1) a third health state (sick) with a utility level that is intermediate to utility if healthy and utility if dead, (2) a family perspective in which a parent makes choices about risk exposure both for herself and for a child, and (3) a multi-period framework that allows for possible parent/child differences in illness latency. Monetary benefits of health risk reduction obtained from the integrated model are compared with those that would be computed using the standard model. The integrated model then is applied using data obtained from two field studies of skin cancer and leukemia to demonstrate how it can be used to estimate health benefits of reduced illness and death risks. 相似文献
