Enhanced bioremediation is quickly developing into an economical and viable technology for the remediation of contaminated soils. Until recently, chlorinated organic compounds have proven difficult to bioremediate. Environmentally recalcitrant compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and persistent organic pesticides (POPs) such as dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) have shown to be especially arduous to bioremediate. Recent advances in field‐scale bioremedial applications have indicated that biodegradation of these compounds may be possible. Engineers and scientists at the Savannah River Site (SRS), a major DOE installation near Aiken, South Carolina, are using enhanced bioremediation to remediate soils contaminated with pesticides (DDT and its metabolites, heptachlor epoxide, dieldrin, and endrin) and PCBs. This article reviews the ongoing remediation occurring at the Chemicals, Metals, and Pesticides (CMP) Pits using windrow turners to facilitate microbial degradation of certain pesticides and PCBs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

The impact of disasters, whether natural or man-made, not only has human dimensions, but environmental ones as well. Environmental conditions may exacerbate the impact of a disaster, and vice versa, disasters tend to have an impact on the environment. Deforestation, forest management practices, or agriculture systems can worsen the negative environmental impacts of a storm or typhoon, leading to landslides, flooding, silting, and ground/surface water contamination. We have only now come to understand these cyclical causes and impacts and realize that taking care of our natural resources and managing them wisely not only assures that future generations will be able to live in sustainable ways, but also reduces the risks that natural and man-made hazards pose to people living today. Emphasizing and reinforcing the centrality of environmental concerns in disaster management has become a critical priority, requiring the sound management of natural resources as a tool to prevent disasters and lessen their impacts on people, their homes, and livelihoods. As the horrors of the Asian tsunami of December 2004 continue to be evaluated, and people in the region slowly attempt to build a semblance of normalcy, we have to look to the lessons learnt from the tsunami disaster as an opportunity to prepare ourselves better for future disasters. This article focuses on findings and lessons learnt on the environmental aspects of the tsunami, and its implications on disaster preparedness plans. This article essentially emphasizes the cyclical interrelations between environments and disasters, by studying the findings and assessments of the recent Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami that struck on 26 December 2004. The occurrence of oocytes in the testis (testis-ova) of several fish species is often associated with exposure of estrogenic chemicals. However, induction mechanisms of the testis-ova remain to be elucidated. To develop marker genes for detecting testis-ova in the testis, adult male medaka were exposed to nominal concentration of 100 ng L−1 of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) for 3-5 weeks, and 800 ng estradiol benzoate (EB) for 3 weeks (experiment I), and a measured concentration of 20 ng L−1 EE2 for 1-6 weeks (experiment II). Histological analysis was performed for the testis, and microarray analyses were performed for the testis, liver and brain. Microarray analysis in the estrogen-exposed medaka liver showed vitellogenin and choriogenin as estrogen responsive genes. Testis-ova were induced in the testis after 4 weeks of exposure to 100 ng L−1 EE2, 3 weeks of exposure to 800 ng EB, and 6 weeks of exposure to 20 ng L−1 EE2. Microarray analysis of estrogen-exposed testes revealed up-regulation of genes related to zona pellucida (ZP) and the oocytes marker gene, 42Sp50. Using quantitative RT-PCR we confirmed that Zpc5 gene can be used as a marker for the detection of testis-ova in male medaka. 相似文献

A study of the dietary intake of dioxins, consisting of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dioxin-like PCBs) through foods retailed in the metropolitan Tokyo area from 1999 to 2004 was carried out by the total diet-market basket method on the basis of food classification (14 groups) and the data on food consumption in the Tokyo region obtained from the Japan Nutrition Survey. The daily intake of dioxins per kg of body weight for a 50 kg average adult body was 2.18 pg TEQ/kg/day in 1999, 1.87 pg TEQ/kg/day in 2000, 1.25 pg TEQ/kg/day in 2001, 1.60 pg TEQ/kg/day in 2002 and 2003 and 1.55 pg TEQ/kg/day in 2004, respectively. These amounts were less than the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 4 pg TEQ/kg/day for dioxins established in Japan. The dioxins taken daily through fish and shellfish (group 10) accounted for more than 50% of sum WHO-TEQs. In addition, more than 90% of the daily intake of dioxins was taken through fish and shellfish (group 10), meat and eggs (group 11), milk and dairy products (group 12). Also, this study clearly showed that the ratio of dioxin-like PCBs in the daily intake of dioxins was increasing yearly because the reduction rate of dioxin-like PCBs was lower than that of PCDDs and PCDFs in foods. 相似文献

The multi-component behavior of fixed-bed adsorption of dioxins (DXNs) was examined through detailed analyses of the concentration profiles of isomers in fixed-bed activated carbon fiber (ACF). Regularities in both adsorption rates and strengths were clarified. (1) The rate of transfer in the adsorption of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCCDs/DFs) tends to increase with decreasing number of chlorine substituents. Axial dispersion also tends to increase with a decreasing number of chlorine substituents under our experimental conditions. (2) Homologues with the same number of chlorine substituents in PCDDs/DFs have similar adsorption strengths. The adsorption strength of PCDD/DF isomers is probably greater than that of co-planar polychlorinated biphenyls (co-PCB) isomers when the number of chlorine substituents is identical. (3) The adsorption strength of isomers depends on their molecular structure. In PCDDs/DFs the toxic isomers, all of which have vicinal chlorine substituents at the 2, 3, 7 and 8 positions, are relatively strong. It is clear, especially in TeCDDs, that isomers with vicinal chlorine substituents are stronger than isomers without. The effective diffusivity of uranium(VI) in Inada granite has been determined by through-diffusion. Experiments were performed at room temperature (20–25°C) in a 0.1 mol 1−1 KCl solution where uranium is present predominantly as the poorly sorbing UO22+. An effective diffusivity (De) of (3.6 ± 1.6) × 10−14 m2 s−1 was obtained, close to that for uranine (nonsorbing organic tracer), but one order of magnitude lower than those obtained for Sr2+ and NpO2+, and two orders of magnitude lower than that obtained for I−. According to well established theory, a proportional relationship exists between De and the diffusivity in the bulk of the solution (Dv). The effective diffusivity obtained in granite was not proportional to Dv. This agrees with results obtained for effective diffusivity in a Swedish granite. The ratio De/Dv was found to be not constant but increased with De or Dv. This result suggests a limit to the application of the theory. 相似文献

Levels and tissue-dependent distribution of dioxin in Japanese domestic leafy vegetables--from the 1999 national investigation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In 1999, Japanese domestic leafy vegetables were successively investigated for levels of dioxins, including 17 dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), four non-ortho co-planar PCBs (co-PCBs) and eight mono-ortho co-PCBs, all of which had been assigned toxic equivalency factors (TEFs) by WHO in 1997. The mean levels of dioxins in the edible portions were 0.07 (0.09) pg TEQ/g in spinach, 0.13 (0.14) pgTEQ/g in garland chrysanthemum, 0.01 (0.04) pg TEQ/g in mitsuba (marsh parsley) and 0.01 (0.03) pg TEQ/g in chingentsuai (Brassica Campestris var. chinesis), when non-detects were set to zero (and set to half the limit of detection). In order to understand the dioxin pollution of leafy vegetables in detail, a further investigation of dioxin levels in the tissues of spinach was conducted. As a result, the dioxin levels in the leaves were found to be higher than those in the stem and red collar, but they were much lower than those found in the primary and secondary roots, which are considerably affected by the soil, which is recognized as a sink of airborne dioxins. The dioxin levels in edible portions (leaves, stem and red collar) were obviously lower than those in non-edible portions (primary and secondary roots). In addition, from the finding that several lower-chlorinated PCDD/Fs and co-PCBs, namely 2,3,7,8-TCDD/F, 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 1,2,3,7,8/2,3,4,7,8-PeCDFs, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,7,8-/1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDFs, 3,3',4,4'-TCB, 2,3,3',4,4'-/2,3',4,4',5-PeCBs, and 2,3',4,4',5,5'-HxCB, were more highly represented in the dioxins in the leaves than in those in the secondary roots, it was suggested that in leafy vegetables the deposition of gaseous, presumably moderately volatile dioxins in leaf wax is another pollution pathway in addition to the adhesion of dioxin-contaminated particles including soil. 相似文献

SUMMARY This paper is concerned with a twenty-five year campaign against the relocation of the Komatsu-Tenmangu shrine as a result of the enlargement of the Kakehashi river. The Komatsu-Tenmangu shrine is an important cultural property of Japan, and was constructed by Toshitsune Maeda, the third dynasty of the Kaga clan in 1657. It is suggested that the primary reason why it took so long to settle this issue is a flaw in our social system for managing public works. It is concluded that preservation of cultural property is not always contrary to land development, and that the proposed procedures or something like them must be put into practice for the real expansion of our culture. 相似文献

The survival rates were studied of fertilized eggs, larvae, fry, and adults of pale chub Zacco platypus (Temminck and Schlegel) exposed to various concentrations of ammonia. There was a decrease in hatching rate and an increase in deformed alevins at a concentration of 0.9 mg liter(-1) of ammonia. All alevins were deformed at a concentration of 1.6 mg liter(-1) of ammonia and no eggs hatched at a concentration of 3.1 mg liter(-1) of ammonia. No larvae survived for 84, 24 and 12 h at concentrations of 1.2, 2.0 and 4.7 mg liter(-1) of ammonia, respectively. Eighty percent of the fry died after 168 h and no fry survived for 24 h at concentrations of 1.6 and 2.1 mg liter(-1) of ammonia, respectively. Eighty percent of the adults died after 24 h and no adult survived for 12 h at concentrations of 1.0 and 1.9 mg liter(-1), respectively. Larger adults were the most susceptible to ammonia. The order of resistance to ammonia was eggs, fry, larvae, and adults. 相似文献
