Patterns of connectivity are important in understanding the geographic scale of local adaptation in marine populations. While natural selection can lead to local adaptation, high connectivity can diminish the potential for such adaptation to occur. Connectivity, defined as the exchange of individuals among subpopulations, is presumed to be significant in most marine species due to life histories that include widely dispersive stages. However, evidence of local adaptation in marine species, such the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, raises questions concerning the degree of connectivity. We examined geochemical signatures in the otoliths, or ear bones, of adult Atlantic silversides collected in 11 locations along the northeastern coast of the United States from New Jersey to Maine in 2004 and eight locations in 2005 using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and isotope ratio monitoring mass spectrometry (irm-MS). These signatures were then compared to baseline signatures of juvenile fish of known origin to determine natal origin of these adult fish. We then estimated migration distances and the degree of mixing from these data. In both years, fish generally had the highest probability of originating from the same location in which they were captured (0.01-0.80), but evidence of mixing throughout the sample area was present. Furthermore, adult M. menidia exhibit highly dispersive behavior with some fish migrating over 700 km. The probability of adult fish returning to natal areas differed between years, with the probability being, on average, 0.2 higher in the second year. These findings demonstrate that marine species with largely open populations are capable of local adaptation despite apparently high gene flow.  相似文献

Plankton nets moored in tidal channels around Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas, were used to monitor larval supply from Exuma Sound to benthic habitats on Great Bahama Bank in the winter months (December–February) of 1990–1991 and 1991–1992. A total of 10376 fishes were collected in 1990–1991 from 58 taxa; in 1991–1992, 13358 fishes were collected from 56 taxa. Vertical distributions of 16 dominant taxa suggested that most settlement-stage fishes were concentrated in surface waters Six taxa showed no yearxdepth interaction; of Fese, five were sigmficantly more abundant in the surface nets. Eight of the ten taxa with significant yearxdepth interactions displayed a tendency to be more abundant in surface layers than in sub-surface collections during the first year, but were more evenly distributed across surface and sub-surface collections in the second year of sampling. Larval supply of six taxa showed significant coherency over spatial scales from 0.5 to 1.5 km. Over scales up to 5 km, however, larval supply became largely decoupled at the daily level. Significant inter-annual variability in the vertical and horizontal distributions of settlement-stage fishes suggests that behavior may play a major role in determining larval supply in tropical shorefishes.  相似文献

Transgenerational isotope labelling (TRAIL) using enriched stable isotopes provides a novel means of mass-marking marine fish larvae and estimating larval dispersal. The technique, therefore, provides a new way of addressing questions about demographic population connectivity and larval export from no-take marine protected areas. However, successful field applications must be preceded by larval rearing studies that validate the geochemical marking technique, determine appropriate concentrations and demonstrate that larvae are not adversely affected. Here, we test whether injection of enriched stable barium isotopes (135Ba and 137Ba) at two dose rates produces unequivocal marks on the otoliths of the coral reef grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus. We also assess potential negative effects on reproductive performance, egg size, condition and larval growth due to injection of adult female fish. The injection of barium isotopes at both 0.5 and 2.0 mg Ba/kg body weight into the body cavities of gravid female fish was 100% successful in the geochemical tagging of the otoliths of larvae from the first spawning after injection. The low-dose rate produced no negative effects on eggs or larvae. However, the higher dose rate of 2 mg Ba/kg produced small reductions in yolk sac area, oil globule area, standard length and head depth of pre-feeding larvae. Given the success of the 0.5 mg Ba/kg dose rate, it is clearly possible to produce a reliable mark and keep the concentration below any level that could affect larval growth or survival. Hence, enriched Ba isotope injections will provide an effective means of mass-marking grouper larvae.  相似文献

Light traps were used to capture larval fishes, immediately before settlement, at two localities 500 km apart on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in December, 1987. Samples from Lizard Island, in the northern GBR, and Davies Reef, in the central GBR, were dominated by two species of damselfish:Chromis atripectralis andPomacentrus coelestis. Analysis of otoliths revealed significant differences in both size and age at settlement between the two localities forP. coelestis, but not forC. atripectoralis. Growth rates determined for pre- and post-settlementP. coelestis suggested a sigmoidal growth trajectory through the larval life, with growth slowing as fishes approached the time of settlement. Post-settlement growth rates were faster than growth prior to settlement in both species. Growth in both species was, however, similar between localities. The relationship between fish size and otolith size was complex, varying both between pre- and post-settlement fishes, and among localities. This paper describes key linkages between land management activities and stream water quality for a 5230 ha catchment used for intensive pastoral agriculture in southern New Zealand. Due to low annual rainfall and the wide coverage of soils with low available water-holding capacities, flood irrigation of the 2400 ha of flat land within the catchment is an important feature impacting on farm business profitability and stream health. Water quality variables and nutrient and sediment yield estimates are reported for a four-year period. This monitoring shows that some improvement in farm environmental performances would generally be desirable, with stream concentrations of nutrients (N and P), sediment and faecal bacteria regularly exceeding guidelines recommended for surface waters. Field measurements, farm management surveys and farm systems modelling have identified some land management practices that appear to be key sources of many of these pollutants. Border dyke irrigation runoff has a potentially large effect on a range of water quality parameters, due to both the excessive stream flows generated by over-watering and the entrainment of P, N and faecal bacteria in this flow as it passes from land to stream. Stock access to some of the remaining un-fenced lengths of the stream was also recognised as an important land management practice that needed to be addressed if some of the key catchment values identified by stakeholders, such as maintaining a healthy trout fishery and a stream suitable for recreational use, were to be protected. Assessments of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a number of potential mitigation practices identified that managements which targeted reducing irrigation runoff (e.g. by installing bunds or using appropriate watering times) and fencing and planting riparian margins showed the greatest potential to meet these key values with least cost to farm businesses. Other farm practices were also identified that incurred nil or minimal cost while also delivering small or moderate benefits to stream water quality.  相似文献

Plankton nets were moored in tidal channels around Lee Stocking Island to monitor larval supply of fishes to nursery habitats that fringe Exuma Sound, Bahamas. Sampling was conducted continuously through two consecutive winters of 1990–1991 and 1991–1992. Meteorological and hydrographic data were also recorded during these periods. Three of the six most abundant taxa (leptocephali, Bothidae and Ophidiidae) showed strong lunar associations, with periodicities between 28 and 30 d. Labrids were the only family to show evidence of any semi-lunar activity. The time series for the families Clupeidae and Tetraodontidae appeared to be stochastic. Cross-correlation analyses were used to examine coupling of larval replenishment and physical processes. Four of six taxa examined showed significant relationships between larval supply and onshore winds at short time lags during 1990–1991. In 1991–1992, however, taxa showed stronger associations with the northwest, long-shore wind component than with onshore winds. Coherency in larval supply among several taxa was remarkably strong. This implies either that the magnitude of spawning is linked among taxa, or that planktonic processes are affecting a number of taxa in very similar ways. The similarities in the magnitude of supply events among taxa found here may be related to complex interactions between larval behavior and the physical environment.  相似文献
