Summary The tendency of Euscorpius carpathicus larvae to remain on immobilized live or dried scorpions of the same or different species (Euscorpius flavicaudis) has been tested. Dried scorpions are less attractive than live ones, which are equally attractive regardless of species, sex or reproductive phase. The larvae find old (one year) dried specimens less attractive than freshly or recently (15 days) killed females, which are equally as attractive as live mothers (Table 1). A substratum treated with a chloroform extract of the mother's cuticle is consistently preferred by the larvae. The maternal behaviour (tolerating the larvae on the back) usually disappears about a week after the moult of the larvae, but it can be protracted if they are continually replaced by younger larvae (Table 2). The survival rate of larvae on live mothers is higher than on dried specimens.  相似文献

Sesarma leptosoma, somewhat similar to the Atlantic related species, Aratus pisonii, is an East-African mangrove crab which spends its entire life on the roots and branches of mangrove trees (mostly Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Ceriops tagal). S. leptosoma never enters the water, nor does it ever venture onto the free mud surface at low tide. Part of the day and night it remains on the lower parts of the mangrove aerial roots, which are often encrusted with a wet algal mat of Bostrichia spp., searching for food and water. Twice a day, from ca. 06:00 to 08:00 hrs in the morning and 16:00 to 18:00 hrs in the afternoon, many of the crabs migrate as far as the leaves at the top of the tree on which they feed. However, they only spend a brief period among the leaves, from ca. 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 19:00 hrs, after which time they make their way back towards the roots again in two downward migrations. In the morning, the downward migration brings all the crabs back to the roots, but in the evening not all the crabs take part in the downwards migration and some of them pass the whole night in the tree tops. A comparison of the migration time patterns for two different periods of the year (June–July and November) shows that the number of crabs migrating along the tree trunk is modulated by the spring-neap tidal cycle, while the onset of daily migration seems to be controlled mostly by the light level and/or other climatological cues. The adaptive significance of this migratory behaviour is discussed. Observations reported in our study were made in Mida Creek, Dabaso, Kenya in 1991 and 1992.  相似文献

In recent years several plant species have been in use as bioindicators and several tests have been developed to evaluate the toxicity of environmental pollutants in vegetal organisms. In the present paper Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. (ecotype Wassilewskija) was used as bioindicators of two genotoxic substances: potassium dichromate and dihydrophenanthrene. Inhibition of seed germination was observed with both pollutants. AFLP analysis (i) indicated that both substances are genotoxic, (ii) showed that dihydrophenanthrene induces DNA changes in different target sequences than potassium dichromate, (iii) quantified the genotoxic effect using cluster analysis by comparing DNA from treated plants with that of control plants. On the basis of these considerations we suggest that AFLP method is a powerful tool for measuring qualitative and quantitative genotoxic activity due to environmental pollutants. AFLP method can be applied to a wide range of bioindicator organisms and may become a universal methodology to identify target genes for specific genotoxic agents. This could open up possibilities for designing specifically targeted assays and new approaches to risk assessment.  相似文献

Eriphia smithi is a very common East African intertidal xanthoid crab. Its dietary input is based mainly in algal grazing (during the day) and predation (particularly at night). Predation appears quite opportunistic and mostly directed at crustaceans and molluscs, among which bivales largely predominate. Echinoderms are actively avoided and, contrary to common belief, predation on Prosobranchia is only accessory.  相似文献

In Mida Creek, Kenya (3°20′S, 40°5′E), at high water, the snail Cerithidea decollata dwells on the trunks of mangrove trees (Avicennia marina), while during low water it migrates to the ground, foraging at various distances from the trunk, where it aggregates again well before the incoming tide. Snails from the upper shore level are 150–200 m distant from those living at the lower shore level and they cluster at lower heights on trunks. In any case, sufficient height is usually attained to avoid being submersed. An experiment was designed (February and October 2005), exchanging individuals from different shore levels subject to different tide regimes, in order to test whether snails rely on internal information or on external, direct cues, to adapt their behaviour to local conditions. Results show that C. decollata mostly rely on internal information, presumably based on an internal clock. When individuals from upper and lower shore levels were exchanged, their internal clocks continued to govern when to ascend the home trunk and how high to climb for five to six successive tides, after which the behaviour was reset to the new local conditions.  相似文献

Although the role of macroinvertebrates in the nutrient cycling of the Indo-Pacific mangrove ecosystems is now a paradigm of ecological research, most of the research and scientific assumptions deal with decapod crustaceans alone. However, decapods are not the only representatives of mangrove macrobenthos and in certain mangals they are surely outnumbered by gastropods, especially by potamidids of the genus Terebralia. This paper aims at bridging the gap in the knowledge of the ecological role of the largest and most abundant potamidid species of the Indo-Pacific mangals, the semiterrestrial T. palustris. In particular we studied size structure and distribution in relation to micro-environmental factors and feeding ecology, both in terms of diet composition and grazing rate, of two populations of this gastropod colonising a Kenyan mangrove creek. In contrast to what has been described by various authors concerning other mangals, in our study site juveniles and adults of T. palustris were present throughout the whole forest, from the landward belt to the seaward fringe, locally reaching very high densities at various levels. Both life stages showed a preference for patches characterised by soil with high organic content; thus the habitat of juveniles largely overlapped with that of the adults, although they are known to occupy different ecological niches. Indeed, gut-content analysis confirmed that juveniles are detritivorous and adults are mainly leaf-litter consumers. In situ experiments on the grazing activity of the adult snails showed that, in contrast to the litter-consuming crabs, they feed in every light and tidal condition, for an hourly consumption rate of ~0.65 g per snail. Considering an average density of about 10.5 adults m–2, it is estimated that a total of 10.5 leaves m–2 are removed by adult snails in each tidal cycle (i.e. about every 6 h). T. palustris is the only leaf consumer capable of searching for food under water during high tide and is responsible for the removal of a great quantity of mangrove litter. The results of the present study strongly suggest that T. palustris plays a major role in the food web, mangrove litter degradation and nutrient cycling of the Kenyan mangal.Communicated by R. The tree crab Sesarma leptosoma Hilgendorf migrates up the mangrove trunks twice a day, both in the morning and in the evening, leaving its refuge near the tree base to feed on fresh leaves. In spite of the 150 cm of tide excursion at the base of the trees, the timing of the migrations seems largely controlled by nontidal factors. The timing of the morning upward migration is controlled by the light level alone. The morning downward migration takes place as soon as the temperature rises and relative humidity falls, with no relationship to tidal cycle or light level. Only the evening upward flow seems primarily controlled by the tide, while the evening downward flow, which ends at twilight, seems to be related to the timing of the evening upward migration, to the tide and again to light levels. During the day, crabs abandon the canopy to avoid low relative humidity, usually coupled with the higher wind speeds, which would quickly dehydrate them. At night, crabs stop migrating, probably because their movements and orientation capability along the trunk and in the canopy are largely vision dependent. Nontidal factors have never previously been shown to influence the migratory behaviour of an intertidal crustacean species so extensively. Received: 14 June 1997 / Accepted: 17 July 1997  相似文献

To address the question of hermit crab clustering, 11 clumps composed of Clibanarius laevimanus were studied in the mangal of Mida Creek, Kenya in 1988. Hermit size and sex were analyzed, as well as the type, dimensions, and status of their shells. Empty gastropod shells constituted a limiting factor on the population studied; the architectural traits which seemed to be favored by the hermits were those associated with a defence against crab predators (high weight and narrow apertures). Differences in either the availability of adequate shells or in the services provided by the housing in question explained the observed diversity in both the type and the mass of shells occupied among the examined population categories. Furthermore, each clump showed homogeneity with respect to the dimensions of the hermits participating in it, and immature and adult specimens were partitioned among three cluster types. It is suggested that clustering might be classified as a social phenomenon, becaus hermits are attracted by similarly sized conspecifics, interact through an elaborate communication system, and because most benefit from a chain process in shell exchange.  相似文献

The activity patterns and use of space of the mangrove dweller Selatium elongatum were studied in the field, in combination with gut content analyses for evaluation of the crab's natural diet. This sesarmine crab proves to be one of the most adapted to climbing and living on mangroves. Moreover, S. elongatum showed a strong preference for being active at high tide, both during the day and night, always along the trunks a few centimetres above the water level, feeding on floating algae and mangrove leaves. Larger males were always recorded within activity areas into which they allow females and smaller males but exclude males of the same size, which probably compete for females. These results confirm that, in spite of the homogeneous herbivorous diet, little niche overlap exists among the several sesarmine crabs inhabiting the East African mangroves, all being leaf consumers segregated on the basis of their horizontal and vertical zonation, and/or of their activity rhythm.
