This report describes the results of a multidisciplinary study of turbulent chemical plume tracking of blue crabs and autonomous agents. The study consists of a coordinated investigation of animal behavior, fluid mechanics, strategy simulations, and chemical sensing. The objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of chemical plume tracking in a single biological system and to prescribe strategies that are effective for autonomous agents. The consensus of the study is that spatial variation in the plume, measured by sampling at multiple locations simultaneously, yields information that is useful for plume tracking. Behavioral investigations reveal that blue crabs demonstrate the ability to detect the chemical plume and use lateral movements to avoid losing contact with the odor. Blue crabs move rapidly towards the source, strongly suggesting that temporal comparisons of odor properties are not employed during navigation. Analysis of the concentration fields reveals that a spatial correlation between spanwise-separated sensors indicates the relative direction of the plume centerline over short time periods provided the sensor spacing is scaled appropriately relative to the plume. Similarly, simulations of tracking strategies reveal an optimal separation for the sensors at a distance roughly equal to the plume width; both smaller and larger sensor spans degrade tracking performance. The simulations further reveal an optimal sensor size above which the fine details of the concentration distribution are obscured and below which there is insufficient contact with the odor to enable effective navigation. Finally, analysis of the chemical signal shows that the frequency dependent correlation function between two (or more) sensors indicates the relative position of the source.  相似文献

The lethal and nonlethal impacts of predators in marine systems are often mediated via reciprocal detection of waterborne chemical signals between consumers and prey. Local flow environments can enhance or impair the chemoreception ability of consumers, but the effect of hydrodynamics on detection of predation risk by prey has not been investigated. Using clams as our model organism, we investigated two specific questions: (1) Can clams decrease their mortality by responding to predators? (2) Do fluid forces affect the ability of clams to detect approaching predators? Previous research has documented a decrease in clam feeding (pumping) in response to a neighboring predator. We determined the benefits of this behavior to survivorship by placing clams in the field with knobbed whelk or blue crab predators caged nearby and compared mortality between these clams and clams near a cage-only control. Significantly more clams survived in areas containing a caged predator, suggesting that predator-induced alterations in feeding reduce clam mortality in the field. We ascertained the effect of fluid forces on clam perception of predators in a laboratory flume by comparing the feeding (pumping) behavior of clams in response to crabs and whelks in flows of 3 and 11 cm/s. Clams pumped significantly less in the presence of predators, but their reaction to blue crabs diminished in the higher velocity flow, while their response to whelks remained constant in both flows. Thus, clam reactive distance to blue crabs was affected by fluid forces, but hydrodynamic effects on clam perceptive distance was predator specific. After predators were removed, clams exposed to whelks took significantly longer to resume feeding than those exposed to blue crabs. Our results suggest that prey perception of predators can be altered by physical forces. Prey detection of predators is the underlying mechanism for trait-mediated indirect interactions (TMIIs), and recent research has documented the importance of TMIIs to community structure. Since physical forces can influence prey perception, the prevalence of TMIIs in communities may, in part, be related to the sensory ability of prey, physical forces in the environment that impact sensory performance, and the type of predator detected.  相似文献

Abstract

Industrial Ecology hypothesises that networks of industries designed to be analogous to the structure and properties of food webs may approach a similarly sustainable and efficient state. Although ecology is the metaphor for designing Eco-Industrial Parks (EIPs), prior research has shown that EIPs are inferior in performance compared to natural ecosystems. One EIP design approach is to enlarge EIPs by combining two or more synergistic networks to create a larger, and hopefully more successful, synergistic mega-network. A quantitative analysis using structural ecosystem metrics is presented in this paper in order to test the potential of this approach. The findings indicate that merely enlarging EIPs by significant amounts may not be the best strategy for improving performance, but that special attention should be placed on the inclusion of key actors like agriculture that act like detritivores and promote more intense internal cycling.  相似文献
